Patmos has a northern and

southern section, joined by a narrow

isthmus in the center. The isthmus can be

seen in the next photo. The island is

hilly and has few natural resources. Its life has traditionally

been tied to the sea.

The Island of PATMOS

Patmos: Landscape - Patmos is rocky and arid with few natural resources and no rivers. Much of the rugged coastline features rocky hills that plunge directly into the sea. Some of the lower slopes of hills are flat enough to create small fields and meadows, and some of the bays have beaches that can be used to anchor small boats.

PATMOSThe island of Patmos lies 37 miles from the western coast of Asia Minor. The island is about 9 miles long and about 2 and a half miles wide, although it broadens to a width of 6 miles across its extreme northern end. The deeply indented coastline consists of ridges and hills that rise from the Aegean Sea.

Patmos: Harbor & Town

Patmos: Fortress - A fortress was built in the 3rd century B.C. on the rocky hill near the center of the picture on the narrow isthmus. At that time, the fortress was an outpost of the city of Miletus on the mainland as a refuge from piracy. The fortress continued to stand into Roman times, although it is not clear whether there was a military presence on the island in the 1st century A.D.

Patmos: FarmingDry and rocky, Patmos has a limited capacity for agriculture. Grain could be grown in small quantities on the lower slopes of hills. The occasional open fields provided space where other staple foods could be grown for the local population.

Patmos: Grazing

Goats are well-suited to grazing on Patmos. They are hardy and can feed on low quality grasses and plants. Valuable sources of food, they provided both milk and meat for residents of the island. An inscription from the 2nd or 3rd century A.D. refers to the sacrifice of goats during religious celebrations for the goddess Artemis.

A temple to the goddess Artemis apparently stood on a high point in the southern part of the island, where the monastery of St. John now stands (center of the picture above). An inscription refers to a woman who served as a priestess of Artemis. Although the inscription is from the 2nd or 3rd century A.D., the worship of Artemis had evidently been common on Patmos long before that.

Patmos: Traditional Deities

Apollo

Hermes

Apollo: the son of Zeus, had a major sanctuary on the mainland east of Patmos, near the city of Miletus. Patmos and other nearby islands were evidently devoted to Apollo in the centuries before Christ. Hermes: In the second century B.C., Members of the Patmos gymnasium erected a statue to Hermes, the messenger of the gods. During the festival of Hermes, sacrifices were offered and the head of the gymnasium wore a golden victory wreath on his head. Other religious rites on Patmos included the running of a torch race, in which fire was taken from one altar to another.

John, the writer of Revelation, was a Christian prophet, and prophets were sometimes perceived as a threat to social order. He was sent to Patmos for proclaiming the word of God and bearing witness to Jesus (Rev 1:9). Banished persons were not free to leave the island and had to provide their own means of support. In many cases, however, they were allowed to keep personal property and were not routinely subjected to hard labor. When John was on Patmos, most residents were probably worshipers of Greek and Roman deities. It is not known whether there were other Christians on the island with John.
