November E-Newsletter Over a Century of Service!
1
We are seeking Hamblen County representatives who would like to participate in the 2017 East Tennessee
Regional Leadership Class. This is a great opportunity to meet others in our surrounding counties and share ideas and
address regional issues, as well as come together to help all of East Tennessee. Plus the bonus is that it is SO MUCH
FUN. You get to meet some awesome people and visit their communities.
Anyone who has completed their county leadership program is eligible to participate. If you have not gone
through Morristown Leadership, but have attended another county Leadership Program or have had much leadership
experience, you may also be eligible to participate.
The cost for the program is $600.00. The classes start with a two-day retreat in Sevierville in February. All of
the other sessions will meet on Wednesdays once a month through November. The year is quickly approach-
ing. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.
For more information, contact Debra Williams at the Chamber or Teresa Trent at 423-581-2880 or

Recreational Development = Positive Development
A s I talk to newcomers to the community,
two things are usually reinforced to me
from them. 1. How does this community offer
so much with taxes so low, and 2. What should I
do to encourage our community to have more
greenways and open park spaces?
I’m sure I will get an email from one indi-
vidual when they read this as this is his com-
ment to me. “I moved to the west side of town
and love walking to the new Wal Mart. I hope
that the rest of the development is walkable.”
I love hearing that so many of us know
that walking will do us more good than harm. I
applaud the city’s efforts at the Morristown Col-
lege site as I like to go check on it occasionally.
Other than “relocating” bricks, not much has
been done there in many years. I actually scared
some “campers” the last time I was there…or
they scared me.
Redeveloping a historic site is always
challenging and sadly, due to neglect of previ-
ous private owners, the site was not only in poor
condition, it was very dangerous as many of the
burned out buildings had a significant “Pisa
Tower” leans to them.
The city’s actions have proven to me and
many individuals in town who enjoy leaving the
comfort of the bean bag chair that they are will-
ing to step up and create safe spaces of redevel-
opment. The city has a proven and beloved park
system that would rival any town in the South-
east of our size and I’m confident that this pro-
ject will produce results that our entire county
will be proud of!
