WELCOME MESSAGE

From Head, Department of Ophthalmology Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz @ Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre Associate Professor Dr. Norshamsiah Md Din Assalamualaikum wbt and Salam Sejahtera. It is my great pleasure to announce that the National Cataract Surgery Symposium 2019 has finally come to realisation. On behalf of the Department of Ophthalmology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as the host of event and organising committee, I would like to extend our warmest welcome to all the speakers and delegates to this symposium. At this meeting, we will discuss issues ranging from basics to the latest trends in performing cataract surgery, preventing and managing complications during cataract surgery, which should be beneficial to trainees, general ophthalmologists and consultant ophthalmologists alike. I do hope that the acquired knowledge can be brought home to be incorporated into our daily practice.

I would like to express my sincerest appreciation and thank all the organising committee members for their tireless effort in ensuring this symposium became a great success. Without their perseverance, this symposium may not come into reality as you can witness it today. I also wish to convey my heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsors for their enormous contribution and support in making this symposium successful.

Finally, have a wonderful stay and a productive meeting. Do visit us again for future meetings.

Thank you.

Associate Professor Dr. Norshamsiah Md Din

WELCOME MESSAGE

From Chairperson National Cataract Surgery Symposium 2019 Professor Dr Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion

Dear Colleagues,

It is indeed a great honour to be given the opportunity to chair the National Cataract Surgery Symposium 2019. On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to extend our warmest welcome to all speakers and delegates to this symposium held in Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz @ UKM Medical Centre from 26th to 28th April 2019.

We are indeed fortunate to have a very distinguished international speaker and teacher, Professor Dr Takayuki Akahoshi from Japan, A/Professor Dr Ronald Yeoh from Singapore and experienced local faculty to share their expertise and enlighten us with their experience of teaching and performing cataract surgeries. We have included a special live surgery session by Prof Akahoshi which covers various types of cataract handled with his special phacoemulsification technique. This will be complemented by an informative video symposium and a series of lectures. There will also be several hands on wet lab sessions for trainee registrants offering both Kitaro wet lab and animal eye simulation models.

The first of what we hope will be an annual affair, this meeting provides the perfect forum for budding ophthalmologists to interact, exchange ideas and gain experience on cataract surgery being the ophthalmologist’s most commonly performed and sight-saving operation.

This event could not have been possible without the generous contribution from our industrial partners and the tremendous support from my Head of Department, Associate Professor Dr Norshamsiah Md Din, who has worked behind the scenes. Last but not least, my heartfelt thanks and sincerest appreciation to the organising committee and paramedics from the Ophthalmology and Nursing departments who have tirelessly worked to ensure the success of this inaugural symposium.

Thank you.

Professor Dr. Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion

Plenary Speaker and Invited International Faculty

Professor Dr. Takayuki Akahoshi

Dr. Takayuki Akahoshi, who has devoted himself as a cataract surgeon to a charity hospital in Tokyo for 26 years, is known as the inventor of the “Phaco Prechop” technique as well as initiator of “Micro Coaxial Cataract Surgery”. In 1992, he developed the Phaco Prechop technique to eliminate the need for the grooving step in phacoemulsification. By performing mechanical nucleo-fracture prior to phacoemulsification, the efficacy and safety of cataract surgery has increased remarkably. This has established the basic concept of nuclear fragmentation in recently developed Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery. In 2004, he realized cataract removal through a 1.8 mm coaxial incision and developed instruments and techniques to implant a 6.0mm IOL, which is his routine procedure now.

By inventing the Phaco Prechop technique and other related instruments, he has realized microincisional cataract surgery (MCIS), which eliminates surgically induced astigmatism. By the invention of new toric devices, he has changed the concept of modern cataract surgery from a surgery which does not induce astigmatism to a surgery that treats pre-existing astigmatism. To demonstrate and educate others on his surgical technique, he has travelled to 67 countries for live surgeries and lectures to date. He has developed a variety of surgical instruments such as prechoppers, phaco tips, electronic toric markers, drapes, MICS instruments including irrigation and aspiration tips, three port sleeves and intraocular lens injectors. He has single-handedly operated on 10,398 cataract cases in 2015, which is the largest number of surgeries performed by a single surgeon in the world. His record of shortest surgical time is 1 minute and 29 seconds. He is the fastest and largest volume surgeon who operates though the smallest incision in the world. Despite retiring from Mitsui Memorial Hospital in 2017, he continuous his tireless efforts to improve clinical results of phacoemulsification surgery.
