Attendance Policy and Procedures

• Attendance is mandatory in interactive small group or clinical sessions including but not restricted to Case Based Learning (CBL), Physician Skill Development (PSD), Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), Professionalism, Year 1 Community Week, and Year 2 Mandatory Clinical Week. Every absence needs to be excused and make-up work may be required at the discretion of the pre-clerkship director.

• In addition, some key large group sessions are mandatory, as indicated in the one45 evaluation system.

• Any unexcused absence will be considered a lack of professionalism and will be brought to the attention of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education or a delegate and could be grounds for failure.

• It is the responsibility of the student to report (in writing) all absences from mandatory sessions to the coordinator, preferably prior to or at the start of the session.* 1st year: Alexe Lalonde <[email protected]>

Page 24: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Academic Concerns

• Mandatory counseling with Pre-Clerkship Director for those who fail exams or are below a set cut-off

• Common issues:– Families and relationships– Illness (including mental health)– Overextended in extracurricular activities– Prioritizing electives above studying– Cramming– “Exammanship”– Learning disability

• What can I do to help?

Page 25: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Evaluations

• Your opportunity to provide feedback to the faculty regarding your education

• Many of the evaluations are mandatory– Please:

• Do them in a timely manner• Be constructive• Be professional• Be honest

Page 26: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Constructive Professional Feedback Examples

• Dr. John Doe made it fairly obvious in this lecture that he has little interest in teacinghing. He brought nothing to the table in terms of tangible teaching qualities, read directly off of the slides from the (extremely lengthy) lecture.

• Versus:• I feel Dr John Doe could benefit from making his lectures more interactive. Much

of the lecture consisted of him reading from the slides which was not engaging for students.

• A USELESS presentation! Completely disorganized! • Versus:• I found the lecture somewhat hard to follow. We tended to jump from one topic

to another. The professor was patient and knowledgeable but I wasn't able to follow and actually grasp the concepts. Perhaps a summary table comparing the topics would be helpful.

• Don't go overtime.  It's annoying.  Ur cute tho.• Versus:• ?

Page 27: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Comments will be deleted if they are

• Hurtful• Profane• All capitalized, exclamation points (unless positive remark)• Not relevant to their teaching

Page 28: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Class and small group behaviour

• Follow the procedures• Use electronic devices appropriately• Treat those in the Med Ed office with respect, they are there to

help you• Let us know when something is not working• Put the effort in during Pre-Clerkship, it will serve you well on

the wards

Page 29: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Page 30: Welcome MD2019! Dr Heather MacLean Pre-Clerkship Director

Respect Yourself

• Seek help before it intervenes with your performance

• The Student Affairs Office is there for you

• If your health impairs your ability to learn or care for your patients we will require that you be monitored by the Wellness Program to stay in the MD program
