Australasian Team Roping Association
15/429 Peel Street
Tamworth, NSW 2340
Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0488 471 069
Dear Team Roping Enthusiast,
Thank you for your interest in promoting an ATRA event. Whether you are a new or existing promoter, the
enclosed information package will give you an overview of how the Association operates and how to
conduct a successful ATRA event. Please keep it in a safe place as it will become an important referral
source.
Some brief points to determine when planning your ATRA event:
ATRA Promoters are required to advertise each roping on the ATRA website no later than 14 days prior to
the event. We ask that date, address, contact details, entry fees, the $ amount of add back for each event
and order of events be advertised. The ATRA recommends a minimum add back of 60% of the Posted
Entry Fee. You can submit your own flyer or the office can create one for you. Check
www.teamroper.com.au and click on the calendar link, then an event for examples. www.teamroper.com.au
is the web site for all information regarding the ATRA and is updated daily. Here you can view results,
member classification numbers, check upcoming events and schools, download forms and view news items
as they occur. Facebook is another major source of publicity used for the association.
Levies payable cost just $7 per entry for senior events and $4 per entry for junior events.
Tiny tots ( Under 7 years ) barrel race does not incur levies.
Format: Availability of stock will come into consideration as you decide what events to include on
your program. As of 1 July 2015 #6 Machine Roping will be a recognised ATRA event, this event is
capped at a #3 classified roper.
You are free to choose which events you conduct however our preferred format is #6, #8, #10, #12,
Open Team Roping, 3D or Open Barrel Race, Ladies Breakaway Roping, Junior Barrel Race &
Junior Breakaway roping. Junior roper development is a major focus of the association so we
encourage you to add as many junior events to your program as feasible. We also encourage you
to have a junior looper dummy roping if you have any small keen family members.
Stock: Your supply of high quality roping cattle is crucial to a successful roping. An indication of how
many, how much and the availability of, is one of the first factors your event will need to take into
account.
Paperwork: Head Office can provide you with comprehensive support to assist you with the running
of your event. A tailor made package is available from the office which can either be used manually
or with a computer along with full instructions on how to run your event efficiently and easily.
A minimum of two office staff is highly recommended.
4
Bonus Points: As an incentive for promoters to have posted prize-money the ATRA awards Double
Points to any roping that has either $500 posted prize money or 5 head and above in a single event.
ie: a 5 head team roping or an Open Roping with $500 posted prize money.
And triple points to any roping that has either $1,000 posted prize money or 10 head and above in a
single event.
Promotors are only permitted to run 2 bonus points events per number, per year.
GST: Please advise the office on your ‘ Event Details Form ’ if you are registering the event to
collect GST. Some competitors are GST registered and will require a Tax invoice upon payment of
their entries. If you are GST registered, it is part of final payouts and not to be added onto the final
payout just as well as the entry fee will include GST. The ATRA is registered for GST so
memberships and levies include 10%.
We thank you for the opportunity to provide an ATRA event to the members of our association. It is our aim
to grow and increase events throughout Australasia whilst offering the opportunity for new and developing
ropers to learn more about the sport of Team Roping.
Yours sincerely,
Jody Young
Office Manager

ATRA HISTORY & OVERVIEW
A meeting was held at Warwick Rodeo October 2006 where it was decided that it was
time for a not-for-profit member based association to represent the sport of Team Roping
in Australia. An association that will provide each member with a voice and equal
representation as part of a National framework is a forward step for Team Roping in this
country. We believe that an Australasian membership based not-for-profit association will
lead to growth and long term sustainability for Team Roping as a sport. With all profits
going back into development of the sport of Team Roping.
A system of governance was established that encourages all members to have a voice
and an active role in the association.
The ATRA is run by a Board of Directors;
President - Tony Lillyman
Secretary - Lacey-Jae O’Halloran
Treasurer - Lacey-Jae O’Halloran
Board Members
Clint Tilse
Alan Wood
Brett George
Les Mayer
Brian Holland
Clint Dolan
Brendan Kersh
Colin Ferguson
Brenton Bell
Peter Barrett
These executive positions are voted on each year at the Annual General Meeting.
6
Here’s Why You Should Choose the ATRA….
If you would like to run an affiliated event, the benefits to running with the major governing body of team
roping in the Australasia are as follows:
The only association where competitors can qualify to the most coveted Team Roping Finals in
Australia at Capella annually with the opportunity to win horse trailers, saddles, cash, buckles and
numerous extra prizes.
Access to Australia's Classification system numbers allowing ropers to have the advantage of roping
against competitors at their particular skill level which attracts higher numbers than an open rodeo.
Web site promotion for your event and advertising tailored to your needs.
Personal guidance and assistance from Head Office.
Regional awards. Each region has a fund based on their membership levy support that rewards local
competitors in the way of buckles/trophies each June.
Access to the most sought-after roping teachers in both America and Australia.
Easy paperwork or computer program available to promoters that ensures their event is fuss-free and
relaxed.
Running an ATRA event is simple and inexpensive. Promoters are able to choose whatever events they ’ d
like to run and the only cost to the competitors is $7 per entry/person and a membership fee. Competitors
must be either Full Financial members of the ATRA or pay a Day membership to compete. This fee
includes Personal Accident Insurance ( not ambulance cover ) to all competitors.
Further information on affiliation can be found on our website: www.teamroper.com.au or if you would like
to discuss anything further please call 0488 471 069 or email [email protected] .
7
At least 2 Weeks prior to roping:
Send Notice to run ATRA event & Application for Public Liability Insurance documents to ATRA Head
Office with payment of $475. ( Affiliation fee is due annually & runs until 1 January each year )
Please make sure that the correct order of events & entry fees are on the website for competitors to
see. (Don’t forget if you are GST registered to include this in your entry fees)
Ensure you have done your OHS assessment for your arena and taken appropriate action regarding
this.
We suggest you appoint a current First Aid Officer for your roping.
1 Week prior to roping:
If you are employing a secretary to do your office:
Send office person information with your entry fee and all of the break-up that he/she will require for
working out payouts for the roping.
Send office person the Order of Events.
Ensure that correct entry fee and order of events are listed on the ATRA website.
If you are taking pre-entries for the roping, we suggest that the promoter takes these entries and not
the event secretary unless this has been arranged. Pre-entries usually involve phone calls being re
turned and this is best to be a cost incurred by the promoter and not the event secretary.
If the event is pre-entry, send entries to office person by Friday for inclusion into roping program or
draw sheets.
Set up the event in either Arena Manager, excel, or paper timesheets however you are going to run
the events.
Print out Membership & Event Membership forms from the ATRA website
Print Classification List off the website ( www.teamroper.com.au )
A Current Members list will be emailed from Head Office - Print this & have at the office to check
competitors are members as they enter, if they are not on the list they must pay event membership to
compete.
Roping Day
Have both Membership & event Membership forms in easy access for members to complete
( s uggestion that these are on a clip board so they don ’ t blow away, with pens handy )
Have handy your Current Membership list to check members are financial as they enter
Have handy your Classification list to check members numbers as they enter - check they fit as a
team in the events they have entered. ( Remember a 10.5 Team can enter in the #10 & 12.5 can
enter in the #12 ropings. )
Set barrier appropriate for steers.
Set up timers and make sure that they are entering into computer system if you have that capability
in your system.
Ensure that any sponsored signage is displayed in arena in accordance with sponsors agreement.
8
Setting Up the Office at Your Event.. Its Easy...
Make sure that the office is set up for your Office workers – they are generally only paid to man
the office for your roping. You should have everything ready for them to operate when they arrive.
You will need two people in your office on the day of the roping. We suggest that you have a time-
keeper who has a hard copy of the draw to record the times as well as the person on the
computer entering the times. We find that the person doing the computer data entry is the best
person to also announce the order of who he/she wants during the roping event. Otherwise you
may end up with confusion and incorrect times being allocated to teams.
Your office set up is best done the day prior to the roping. It needs to cover the following aspects:
Shade, wind and rain protection
2 tables – one long table for office workers and another table for ropers paperwork
3 chairs
Cash tin with a float of at least $500 in assorted cash
Order of Events posted on a notice board for competitors to peruse
Entry Sheets on clipboards for ropers to write their entries on.
Full Membership Forms. Day Membership Forms.
Competitor Rider Insurance Indemnity Forms (If applicable).
Computer – if using a computerized system
Current Membership list
Current Classification list
Printer
Paper. Stapler. Pens
Clip Boards
Small envelopes for payouts
Stop watches for back up in case of automatic timers malfunction
Spare batteries for timers
Notice Board—you may like to have 3, 1 for the office, 1 for the headers side of the
arena and one for the heelers side
First Aid Kit
9
EVENT SECRETARY - The SUPER WOMAN/MAN
Enter contestants into roping program or draw sheets
Do draws for each event – preferably two events in advance.
Late entries can be added as “Ride Ins” and put on the list.
Shut office 15 minutes prior to roping commences to do draws and ensure timers are working.
Run events. Please make sure that you have a hard copy of the times as well as the computer
time. The person on the timer should be given a draw to write down all times as a back up in
case of any errors or queries.
Try to have a 10 minute break after each event and before the next event starts. In this time the
event secretary can:
Average the previous event that was run to work out winners.
Work out payouts for that event – this can be done by the 2nd office person to save some time.
Finalise the draw for the next event.
Post results on Notice Board from previous event.
Post draw for next event on notice board.
During lunch the event secretary can :
Make sure everyone had paid entry fees & memberships
Finalise any results of events that have been run
Prepare for payouts
Set up the draws for events to be conducted after lunch.
After the roping has been completed it is advisable to shut your office for 20-30 minutes to allow
the event secretary to finalise all payouts and have all receipts printed and ready for collection (if
using Arena Manager)
FOLLOW-UP AFTER THE EVENT Please make sure that this is done either by the event secretary or by the producer
Work out ATRA returns – levies sheet, results, membership forms.
Scan and email or post levies, results, payout sheets and memberships to ATRA Head Office.
Please ensure you send the average of each event so points can be allocated from 10 to 1 easily
and a list of all entries as competitors need to compete at 3 events throughout the year to qualify
for the National Finals.
Producers to pay levies to ATRA either by direct deposit or by sending a cheque.
If we can be of any more help please do not hesitate to call one of your directors, regional
representatives or ATRA Head Office.

PAYOUT RECOMMENDATIONS:
This system is recommended to ensure all events Australia Wide are on the same prize money breakdown
scale.
If a 2 Division is run the 1st Div pays out 60% of total prizemoney
2nd Div pays our 40% of total prizemoney
If a 3 Division is run the 1st Div pays out 50% of total prizemoney
2nd Div pays out 30% of total prizemoney
3rd Div pays out 20% of total prizemoney
Divisions can then be paid out on the general rule of 40/30/20/10 as long as last place pays back the entry
fee.
For all Junior barrel races the percentage payout is recommended at 50%, 30%, 20%.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE
We have available to the association Public Liability Insurance for a premium of $475 per annum
starting the 1st January each year. We are able to provide this policy at a greatly reduced rate to
ATRA promoters.
It is a $10 million Public Liability cover from Affinity Insurance Brokers that includes the ATRA and its
events. Once taking out the insurance you must notify the office of any events you would like to be
covered that are being held at a nominated venue. The benefit of this policy is that as long as you
nominate the venue you are conducting the event, the policy is attached to you; not the property. For
example if you have a jackpot at your property one weekend and hold a school at your neighbours
property the next weekend, both events are covered providing the event can be sanctioned by the
ATRA and you notify the office of your intent to conduct the event & reach any ATRA requirements in
regards to advertising of the event. You will receive a Certificate of Currency from the ATRA the week
of your event.
The ATRA Public Liability Insurance covers the following events (providing all requirements are met
for ATRA Affiliation);
- Roping Jackpot (all events advertised on the program)
- School or clinic – Team Roping, Breakaway Roping & Barrel Racing
- Development & Training days – Team Roping, Breakaway Roping & Barrel Racing
JACKPOT REQUIREMENTS Promoters must forward a ‘Notice to Run an Event Application’ to Head Office at least 14 days prior to
the event for it to be affiliated & advertised
All competitors must be either Full or Day members of the ATRA (this membership includes Personal
Accident Insurance)
SCHOOL & CLINIC REQUIREMENTS
Promoters must forward an application to Head Office at least 14 days prior to the event for it to be
affiliated & advertised
School must be held by ATRA endorsed Instructors
Participants have the option to be full or day members of the ATRA. If they opt to not pay any
membership fees they will not be covered for Personal Accident Insurance in the event of an accident.
DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

TRIAD CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM – is used to limit the margin of error in setting roping categories. Each roper
is classified or rated with a number 1 through 10, according to his or he ability to rope. No roper will be
numbered higher than 10. Your classification number is your ability rating as judged by your peers and/or
performance based. If you are a number 4, you can rope with number 5 or less in the number 9 roping.
The sum or your classification number and your partners ’ classification number, cannot exceed the
number of the roping. This procedure closely defines the calibre of each roping division.
The purpose of the classification system is to provide for ropers a handicap system, which will allow them
the opportunity to compete throughout the country against those of similar skills. The ATRA acknowledges
that there is no such thing as a perfect classification system.
The following are the general classification definitions for each team roper ability level.
#1 TRUE BEGINNER - this person is learning to ride and swing a rope. Learning is priority over
competition.
#2 BIGINNER NOVICE - Inexperienced riders with little roping experience. Uncomfortable roping from a
horse, this roper has difficulty controlling their horse and rope at the same time. This roper is new to
competition.
#3 MID LEVEL NOVICE - This roper is competing more and catch percentages have increased.
Comfortable roping from a horse, but limited horsemanship skills prevents control over any aspect of the
run. This instability prevents making necessary adjustments during the course of a run, which leads to
inconsistency from one run to another.
#4 UPPER LEVEL NOVICE - Better rope handling mechanics allow for more catches. Better horsemanship
skills afford control on slow moving steers but this roper still lacks the necessary rope skills and
horsemanship to adjust to fast moving steers. Headers do not handle cattle very well and heelers lack
ability to time feet. Both are inconsistent at putting runs together for the average.
#5 LOW LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEADER ) Catches more than misses and handles cattle with more
consistency. This roper rides a conservative barrier so most of the catches are well down the arena. This
roper stands out in novice class ropings.
#5 LOW LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEELER ) This roper can sense being in time with the steer, which allows
for a better catch to miss ratio. Reaction time is slow making it difficult to adjust speed in the run. The roper
has developed a pattern from one run to the next but struggles to catch many steers in succession. This
roper stands out in novice class ropings.
#6 MID LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEADER ) Catches the majority of steer around the horns, better at riding
the barrier, this roper is turning steers where the heart of the roping is taking place. Skilled at handling
steers through the corner, allows heelers to catch more easily and more frequently behind them. Typically
rides to the hip of the steer before taking a throw and therefore does not take time out of the run.
16
CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA (CONT’D)
#6 MID LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEELER ) #6 MID LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEELER ) This roper knows
when they are in time with the steer. Better horsemanship and better rope handling skills allow them to
make adjustments during the run in order to time up with the steer. This roper rides a conservative corner
and usually tracks the steer several jumps to find a throw. Timing is more automatic, so this roper will
seldom completely miss a steer, however, the roper will frequently rope one leg. Focused more on catching
than dictating the speed of the run.
#7 SEMI PRO - ( HEADER ) This roper can dictate the speed of the run. Skilled at riding the barrier, this
roper will catch most of steers in the upper 1/3 of the arena. This group consists mostly of the better
headers in the amateur ranks.
#7 HIGH LEVEL AMATEUR - ( HEELER ) Sound horsemanship and rope skills allow this roper to catch
most of the cattle by two feet. This roper sets the run up using a wide angle relative to the steer and rides
aggressively through the corner. A solid catcher with intermittent ability to speed up the run. Typically this
roper will hold slack overhead, thus allowing more rope to extend between them and the steer. The inability
to quickly shut the run down on a consistent basis prevents higher classification. Competitive jackpot
heeler.
#8 PROFFESSIONAL - ( HEADER ) this roper rides the barrier extremely well regardless of the length of
score. They consistently rope their steer on the gain ( a stride back from the steer ) and with excellent
horsemanship skills they control both the steer and the speed of the run.
#8 SEMI PRO - ( HEELER ) this roper rides higher and tighter horse position relative to the steer and
consistently catches their steers on third or forth jump. Quicker at handling their slack this roper can take
time of the run by dallying on a shorter rope.
#9 ELITE - ( HEADER ) Regardless of the roping conditions this header has the unique calculated ability
to control the run. They ride superior horses, which allow them to make the most of any steer they draw.
This roper normally ropes for a living and or is among the best in the world.
#9 PROFESSIONAL - ( H EELER ) this roper rides the corner looking for position that enables him to rope
as the steer leaves the corner. This aggressive position allows him to rope most of his steers by two feet on
the second or third jump.
#10 ELITE - ( HEELER ) This roper rides corner looking to rope the steer on the first legal jump and has
the calculated ability to make up time on any given run. Superior horsemanship and rope handling skills
allow him to rope most of his steers by two feet on the first or second jump. Ropes for a living and or is
among the best in the world.

ENTRY FEE BREAKDOWN
The following is a guide only when setting your entry fees. If possible, please keep your fees to a minimum
and the highest possible add back for that entry fee. Obviously the higher the entry fee, the more prize
money/head of cattle should be available to the competitor and this has been reflected in the following fees.
Quality of stock and the competitors seeing the value in their entry fee will ensure returning ropers.
PRIZE MONEY BREAKDOWN
Although there is not a set prize money breakdown for the association, we feel that promoters have the
aptitude to provide a fair and worthwhile break-up that rewards the competitors. We ’ ve found the most
beneficial way is advertising the placings and add back in your poster prior to the event. Hence everyone is
informed of the possible prize pools worth and how it will be split-up. The following is a guide used widely
by promtors:
