Welcome to the Aalto University School of Business Mikkeli Campus

Congratulations! You have been admitted to the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus to study for the Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree. We are very happy to welcome you to our student body. Before you begin your studies in Mikkeli, there are some actions you need to take as soon as possible.

CONFIRMATION OF THE STUDY PLACE You need to return the signed confirmation form to us as soon as possible, but in no case can this form be returned later than July 30, 2013 at 4:15 pm (the Aalto University School of Business prefers to have the confirmations by July 25, 2013). By Finnish law, the students have to register as attending or non-attending to the University each year or they will lose the study place. New students do this when they accept the study place. Please see the instructions in the confirmation form and read also the attached document concerning the one-place-per-student provision. If you decided not to accept the study place here, you should still return the form to us so that we can offer the study place to another applicant in the reserve list. If you think the confirmation form will not arrive in time via mail (especially if you are not in Finland), it is possible to first fax the form to us (fax. + 358 15 211 334/Piela) or send the scanned form as a PDF attachment to: bscba-mikkeli@aalto.fi in order to secure your study place. Even if you would accept your study place by using the Applicants’ Online Service (www.yliopistohaku.fi), you need to send the confirmation form to the address mentioned above. Note. You will have to mail us the original confirmation form in any case! If we have not received your confirmation by the above mentioned time, we consider that you give up your right to study at the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus.

OTHER ISSUES TO DO 1. By law, every student in Finland has to belong to a Student Union. If you register as

attending, you must pay the Aalto University Student Union membership fee (please see the attached invoice). Please remember to bring a receipt of the paid invoice with you when you come to the Orientation week and save it until you receive your student card. Only after you have paid the Student Union fee and presented the receipt to Mikkeli study office, you will receive a student card.

2. Please find the instructions on how to order the student card from here: www.lyyra.fi. You can order the card after you have accepted the study place from us.

3. In addition, you must bring the original diploma from your upper secondary school with you on the first day of Orientation week (e.g. an original Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate, IB/EB/RP Diploma or other high school diploma). We will verify the validity of the diploma and take a copy of it in case we do not already have one.

LIMITED RIGHT TO STUDY FOR THE BACHELOR´S DEGREE The normative duration of studies set for the bachelor’s degree is 3 years. Students are allowed to use 4 academic years registered as an attending student to earn the degree (maximum duration of studies). The duration of studies does not include leave due to voluntary military service or conscription or to maternity, paternity or parental leave. The duration of studies does not include an absence of a maximum of four terms for which the student has registered herself or himself as non-attending. The studies for Bachelor´s degree begin when the applicant accepts a study place in the Aalto University School of Business Mikkeli Campus. Take this time limit into account when registering as attending or non-attending for the next academic year. A non-attending student does not have the right to take exams, get credits registered, get counseling, get student financial aid (there are restrictions in who can get financial aid in Finland), or receive any certificates from the school. ABOUT THE MIKKELI BScBA DEGREE PROGRAM It is important that you clearly understand the nature of the Bachelor´s Degree Program in International Business (also called the BScBA degree program) offered in the city of Mikkeli. The academic structure of the program is very different from other university programs in Finland. Most courses are taught in the form of intensive three-week modules that run through the entire year, also during the summer. The academic year is comprised of fifteen modules. For each module, classes are scheduled for three hours a day, five days a week (Mon-Fri), for a total of 45 contact hours, which includes examinations. All students are expected to attend courses on a full-time basis year-round, so basically the attendance is mandatory to all classes with some flexibility. There are normally four short breaks during the academic year. Because English is the language of instruction, it is essential that all participants are prepared to understand rapid, idiomatic English as spoken in lectures and group discussions. Students are also expected to be able to read English with ease and to express their thoughts clearly in spoken and written English. As part of the degree studies all students study one semester abroad. You will graduate as a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration and you will have excellent possibilities to continue in different Master´s programs or in business life after graduation. Please note that Mikkeli Campus has somewhat different procedures and practices than the Helsinki Campus programs and therefore some information is different for the Mikkeli students than for the Helsinki students. ORIENTATION WEEK The orientation for new students will take place during August 26 – September 1, with the opening ceremonies being held on August 28. Please notice that participation to the orientation week is mandatory during August 26-30. Part of the o-week program on Thu-Fri is required for the Orientation to University Studies course (1 cr). In case you cannot arrive in Mikkeli on time for the orientation week, please contact us by email to negotiate about the issue: bscba-mikkeli@aalto.fi. The first course will begin on Monday, September 2 with mandatory attendance. As a part of orientation you will be assigned a student tutor, who will help you in practical matters. You will later in August receive an orientation package from us with more information on the orientation week, the studies in Mikkeli, student life and other issues. AFYE The purpose of the Aalto First Year Experience (AFYE) is to offer new Aalto University students the best possible experience as a first-year student at our university.
