As summer approaches in Oxford we hope you find time to enjoy this new Music at Oxford season brochure packed with goodies for Autumn, Winter and next Spring!

We open the season in splendid style with Wadham’s 400th anniversary celebration in a magnificent concert featuring the Monteverdi Vespers performed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists. This heavenly event opens the Sheldonian after phase two of its refurbishment and we are looking forward to a fitting celebration of both milestones.

Having programmed some of the world’s finest orchestras last season we felt a change of tone was necessary. This season therefore celebrates the richness and variety of absolute world-class performers offering the most sumptuous solo and chamber repertoire in several enchanting and unusual venues.

First of these solo performances is a unique opportunity to hear Raphael Wallfisch, one of the cello’s most expressive exponents, perform all six of Bach’s incomparable cello suites. We’ve chosen the Victorian moc-Byzantine magnificence of St Barnabas church in Jericho for this wonderful concert, a fittingly handsome setting for these masterpieces.

Other solo highlights of this season include the welcome return of Paul Lewis with his three-concert Schubert cycle. His last appearances for us were all sell out events so I do urge you to book early as this wonderful performer will not disappoint.

The solo feast continues with Rachel Podger and John Williams, two very different performers in two radically different configurations of the Sheldonian.

Next Easter we return to St Barnabas, Jericho with our Easter Voices Festival, an opportunity to hear Oxford’s own Stile Antico and acclaimed vocal specialists Tenebrae on consecutive nights in this wonderful venue. Tenebrae’s last performance for us at Christ Church Cathedral was a spellbinding event so this visit from the choir should not be missed.

As well as the return of our Chapel Series (all events last season sold out so please do book early) we have, of course, our perennial favourite Christmas at Christ Church concerts.

We close with an orchestral blockbuster, the return of Natalie Clein and the Philharmonia grace the Sheldonian’s stage in a night of Elgar and Tchaikovsky that will thrill you and stay with you throughout your summer break.

I do hope you can join us again, please do remember you can book through the website (new and improved), by calling 01865 244806 or in person at the Oxford Playhouse.

The Monteverdi ChoirEnglish Baroque Soloists His Majesty’s Sackbutts and CornettsSir John Eliot Gardiner conductor

Monteverdi Vespers of 1610

The Vespers of 1610 is a monumental work in the history of Western music. Monteverdi’s spectacular writing for choir and orchestra, with colourful use of sackbutts, cornetts, theorbo and soloists is as spell-binding today as for the work’s first audiences. It will no doubt have many anniversary performances, but Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s return to the work with which the Monteverdi Choir’s unparalleled career began, is surely the one to catch. Music at Oxford is privileged to join forces with Wadham College, also celebrating its 400th anniversary, to bring one of the most enduringly magnificent works of the seventeenth century to Oxford.
