Welcome HR & Business Leaders
Conference WelcomeWelcome to our 2017 annual Arizona SHRM State Conference. I can’t begin to express my excitement in leading this year’s conference, which brings phenomenal speakers, an array of HR topics, and over 80 exhibitors at your fingertips. Over the past few years we have grown in attendance, which demonstrates the value of what Human Resources impact has to our organizations and communities. We listen, learn, and act on what will continue to provide each and every one of you an experience you walk away with, being inspired and looking forward to what next year brings.
We hope you find value and leave with new knowledge you can apply to your company, new relationships you can build on, and most of all a feeling of “WOW” excitement.
Thank you to all our volunteers, exhibitors, and attendees. Without you a conference like this would not be possible. From our Past, to our Present, and to the Future, HR lives in us.
Forever HR @ Heart

During this panel presentation, local employers will share with us their best practices in the below areas, while covering the requirements to receive the Arizona Veteran Supportive Employer (AVSE) designation. How to have a broader inclusive, diversity, or social responsibility initiative for the organization with an emphasis on engaging talent to promote growth. How to recruit, develop, and retain military veteran talent through a veteran-supportive employer brand, internal training on military/veteran culture and strengthening career advancement pathways for veteran employees. How to leverage military/veteran talent, acumen, and strengths in strategy across the organization. How to implement best practices successfully utilized by other employers.

Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.azflse.org
The “key thing” at this foundation is getting the work done. That could mean working from home or putting in a few hours during the day and again after the kids go to bed. To make it all work for both employer and employee, the leadership of this small nonprofit supports the work-life needs of its staff. Two-thirds of staff have work-provided cell phones with access to email. This allows employees access to work questions both from inside the office and out. Depending on resources available, staff who regularly work from home have an office supplied laptop and a wireless card or hotspot.

When Work Works Keynote
Scott FerrinDrive Business Success With Workplace Flexibility1.0 SHRM & HRCI Business Strategy Credit5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Demographic and technological transformations are the new workplace reality, forcing HR and organizations to re-imagine how work gets done to ensure business competitiveness. Learn how you can drive business success by harnessing the power of workplace flexibility (“work-flex”) to manage these workforce changes and support your organizational goals and strategy. Explore how work-flex can add value to the bottom line at your organization by improving retention and employee health and well-being, reducing absenteeism and real estate costs, and increasing productivity with better engagement and a solid business continuity strategy. This session will also help you make a strong business case for the value of work-flex to your leadership team, using strategic workforce planning data and performance metrics, and by benchmarking your work-life offerings and leveraging other resources available under the SHRM-Families and Work Institute partnership.

Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.azahcccs.gov
AHCCCS provides a variety of opportunities to meet the changing needs of both their virtual and onsite workforces. An example is their “Infant at Work” program (where both mothers and fathers may bring their newborns to work) which has helped mothers to remain on their career track. Since its launch, 10 infants have “graduated” with another five currently enrolled! The agency reports having saved substantially through a reduced need for office space. By not having to commute to work, virtual office employees have also saved “a combined yearly total of approximately 1,318,750 miles in travel.”
BDO USA, LLP - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.bdo.com
BDO encourages employees to think of both day-to-day and formal flexibility, and have volunteer “Flex Leads” in every office who serve as local resources, in addition an intranet portal, trainings, procedures, and tools to support all employees. BDO focuses on fit rather than balance because they believe it’s about a customized fit for each employee, the business, and the family; and their flex strategy has visible executives leading the charge. The firm offers an employee network targeted at remote workers as well as an active, virtual parent network. The firm recently launched a coaching program for parents preparing for or returning from leave, and one for managers who have employees going out and coming back from leaves.
CBIZ - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.centerforstudentachievement.org
Associates at CBIZ can flex their start and end times (not to exceed two hours), compress their work week and telecommute. The firm supports its employees who are new parents and/or have assumed elder care responsibilities by offering a partial workload or part-time option. “Flex Fridays” are also an option for the firm’s tax group after busy season where employees are able to take every other Friday off. The company also promotes job sharing where two qualified individuals choose to do so.

Awards cont.Center for Student Achievement - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.centerforstudentachievement.org
The Center for Student Achievement is a small organization that believes communication is key to success. Its leadership sets the example for flexibility for all employees. And each staff member has a leadership role in some capacity. For example, a leader in one meeting might play a supporting role in the next and vice versa. Support for flexibility is built through conversation between management and employees. This allows for a checks and balances system which is integral to every part of the Center’s mission.
Henry & Horne, LLP - Tempe, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.hhcpa.com
This employer offers firm-wide developmental training on a weekly basis and supports an open-door policy to encourage feedback. Employees manage their own breaks, start and end times and can elect to work remotely. The firm reports very low turnover, and, by eliminating billable hour goals, an increase in retention while maintaining the bottom line. Employees who transition to parenthood or assume elder care responsibilities are supported with options beyond FMLA for maternity such as customized flexible or part-time schedules with return to full-time workloads.
ICAN: Positive Programs for Youth - Chandler, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.icanaz.org
ICAN’s CEO sets the example for an environment of workplace flexibility, so the message filters down clearly to all of the organization’s managers and employees. Almost all employees have the option to work from home at certain times. Management works directly with employees to ensure that their needs are met. For example, a new mother left the company, but was able to return part time with adjusted responsibilities and a flexible schedule. Low turnover has allowed this nonprofit to reduce recruitment costs and retain a happier workforce.
23
Awards cont.Morrison, Clark & Conover CPAs, PLLC - Chandler, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.morrisonclarkcompany.com
This CPA firm is 100% cloud based, so employees have the option to work remotely when needed. As a small team of 19, staff have almost complete discretion on when they work, provided they keep their team and supervisor informed. Each member is assigned an advocate with whom they meet with privately on a regular basis to plan and report on goals and discuss any concerns. Twelve weeks of maternity leave is provided, and leave is also offered to care for family members. The firm is proud of its internship program which gives college students an opportunity to get to know the accounting field.
Orchard Medical Consulting - Phoenix, AZProfessional services including law, educationhttps://www.orchardmed.com/index.html
The majority of Orchard staff works remotely due to the nature of the business. Nurses are encouraged to have home offices which provide them with a quiet work area free from distraction. The corporate office is also available when remote employees need a place to work between appointments. Orchard provides new parents with two weeks of paid maternity or paternity leave in addition to FMLA. Employees who care for ill or elder family members are also supported with flexibility and/or decreased workloads. Older employees are offered phased retirement options, as needed.
Ryan, LLC - Scottsdale, AZProfessional services including law, educationwww.ryan.com
myRyan, the firm’s flexible, results-focused workplace environment, continues to be regarded as one of the most innovative work environments in the tax services industry. Employees are measured on results achieved, not on hours worked and can choose where and when they want to work on a day-to-day basis. The firm has no official PTO limit for exempt employees who can take as much as they need, in agreement with their managers. Ryan also offers a “reduced scope” option for all full-time employees which is particularly useful to new parents as they re-enter the workforce after a leave of absence.

Mike WalshThe Future of HR1.0 SHRM & HRCI Business Strategy Credit9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
What’s Next? The talent question will become exponentially more important in the future as leaders and organizations come under pressure to reinvent themselves for the 21st century. Building digital products is no longer enough for a company’s future survival - the real challenge is knowing how to build a digital organization. Digital transformation is more than a mere technology upgrade; it represents a completely new way of thinking about leadership, how we engage with customers and employees, how teams interact and collaborate, and the design of the company itself. The workforce of the future is, in fact, a workforce of one. For HR leaders, the challenge will be leveraging the power of emerging technologies and automation to shift the focus from transactional back-office processes and generic recruitment, to taking a more strategic role in defining the capabilities of tomorrow’s algorithmic leaders, the dynamics of a blended workforce, and how to better use data to hack their company cultures. Mike’s approach to the future of HR is to focus on the human impact of disruptive change. 2017 will mark the first full year that generation Z will have settled into the workforce - bringing new challenges for leaders, as well as a widening generational gap in differing approaches to technology and culture. HR leaders need to not only understand the mindset of tomorrow’s employees, but also the kinds of tough decisions that today’s leaders will need to make to remain relevant in an age of AI, algorithms and automation. In his ongoing research on successful digital transformations, Mike Walsh has identified the key priorities that smart leaders will need as they challenge their teams to move as quickly as their customers do. Through a series of interviews and briefings, he will work with your team to isolate the frameworks and case studies most relevant to your objectives. Mike then brings a design thinking perspective to helping audiences re-imagine the way that their company should work, inspiring teams to embrace a culture of agility, responsiveness and innovation.
