WELCOME!

Welcome LSBU and to London South Bank Students’ Union, the proud home of our students!

I’m Ilham, the President of The Students’ Union for 2014/15. This year my team and I will be making sure you’re fully represented and that your needs and opinions are at the heart of every decision both The Union and The University make.

Each year a team of students is voted in to lead your Students’ Union, setting the agenda for the activities over the next academic year. With over 19,000 students at LSBU we have a range of people with varying and individual problems and dreams; all of whom we’ll be representing!

Alongside myself, you will be represented by Ashley Storer-Smith, your new Vice President Activities & Employability, who will

be looking to grow the number of opportunities students have to get involved with activities around campus. He’ll also be working with the staff to make sure that each activity develops those involved and strengthens their skills and knowledge, which will also improve their employability.

The other member of the officer team is Abdi Osman, the Vice President Student Experience, who’ll be working closely with the course reps and key figures within The University to strengthen the academic side of your time at LSBU. He will be working to make sure your progression and learning environment are as peaceful and fulfilling as possible.

Ultimately we’re here to make your time at LSBU the best it can be, so if you see us around come and say hello and don’t hesitate to get in touch!

by The Union President, Ilham Abdishakur

6 STUDENT LED SOCIETIES

Student led societies are your chance to meet like minded people and make friends outside of your course and accommodation. These student led groups are supported by The Union, but are formed, and led by your fellow students. There is a lot of variety, including everything from Dance and Drama to Motor-sports and the Afro -Caribbean Society.

The groups can be based on faith, culture, interests, academic subject or hobbies. We’re always looking for new and different groups to nurture into a new society. Some of our larger societies have hundreds of members, but you only need 5 members to get your society started and then another 5 to become official.

As a society President or committee member you will develop skills

and have experiences that will be invaluable in making you stand out from the crowd after graduation. You will also be a leader of your society and will be responsible for managing the members, the finances and the activities that the society runs or takes part in.

Getting involved in a society is a great way to make good friends and great memories. Being part of a society will guarantee that your time at LSBSU is memorable for more than just the lectures!

Get involved by visiting www.lsbsu.org/societies to see an up to date list of all our societies and to purchase your membership. If you have any questions feel free to tweet us, or pop in and ask at The Union reception.

Sports clubs at LSBU provide a great opportunity for extra-curricular activity. The clubs belong to the students, with each one being led by a student committee who deal with the day-to-day decisions making and running of the teams.

Qualified coaches are provided to make sure everything is safe and to enable student athletes to assess and improve their performance. Along with the well documented physical health benefits of participating in sports, joining a club or team is a great way to meet new people and form bonds that last a lifetime. Clubs are also known to indulge in celebrations and socials on a regular basis!

If you are looking for more than a way to socialise, sports clubs

also provide you with the chance to travel around London and the rest of the UK to face off against teams from other Universities from across the country. Many of our clubs compete in the British University Championship Sports (BUCS) which allows you to represent your University at an elite level against a variety of other institutions.

Get involved by visiting www.lsbsu.org/sports to see an up to date list of all our sports and to sign up for your membership. If you have any questions feel free to tweet us, or pop in an ask at The Union reception.

Union Volunteering brings you the opportunity to make ‘volunteering’ whatever you want it to be. Our student led projects put you in control, you could be the Chairperson, Treasurer, Comms Officer or Project Manager. these roles empower you, teach valuable skills and will improve your employment prospects. As a volunteer you have the chance to lead existing projects or create new ones; the power is really in your hands.

Some current volunteers engage in educational programmes that involve going into schools and giving young pupils support and advice. Volunteers have also been involved in community development projects alongside groups like Bankside Open Spaces, a local charity that has it’s own green patch based here at the Student Centre. A range of other opportunities such as mentoring, helping at

Victim Support and other social awareness campaigns have also been developed for students.

In addition, volunteer placements are organised by the Employability Team at The University as well. For more info on these types of opportunities you can visit https://my.lsbu.ac.uk/page/volunteering or email the LSBU Volunteer Coordinator on [email protected]

Apart from the benefits that come from volunteering such as helping out your community and gaining experience for your CV, our volunteers are also rewarded for their efforts with a black-tie end of year awards ceremony where all volunteers receive certificates acknowledging their commitment.

Get involved by visiting www.lsbsu.org/volunteer to register your interest.

RAG are a team dedicated to creating fun, unusual and sometimes unexpected ideas to raise money for a variety of charities. Our student led teams have taken part in a range of activities from jumble sales and sponsored sleepouts to pool tournaments and a talent showcase that both engaged the student population and had a positive impact on the student experience of all involved.

The RAG team were able to create stimulating events that brought people together, entertained and inspired. In the span of just a few

months, the RAG team raised over £1,500 and donated it to four different charities, both local and national.

RAG is the ideal place to meet characters of all types, socialise and have fun whilst make a positive social contribution. Come down and make a ripple.

Student Council is the highest level of democratic decision making within The Union. It is key in determining the way that we run. The Council is made up of the three elected Full Time Officers and more than 40 part-time officers and representatives from sports, societies, academic faculties and the general students population to ensure the widest possible representation of the student body.

Council motions (proposals and ideas of things for the Union to change, stop doing or start doing) can be put forward by any registered student. Council meetings are open to all students of The University and are beneficial to attend as they give you a platform on which to highlight what is important to your student experience at LSBU.

We need you to come to us with your suggestions and issues; we are passionate, but not psychic! It is also a chance to hold the Full Time Officers accountable for their work; you voted them in, and they speak for you so they have to report to you with what they have been working on.

If a decision is agreed upon by The Council it becomes a Union Policy, meaning the power to make genuine change is in your hands.

Get involved by visiting www.lsbsu.org/council to see an up to date list of all our motions and council members as well as the dates of the next meetings.

What are Student Elections?Elections give all students the opportunity to be directly involved with the governance and direction of the Students’ Union.

More importantly, it allows any member to come forward and present their ideas, solutions and practices for taking The Union forward and ensures that we continue to be a forward looking, student-centred organisation, that is part of a national movement of student-led organisations.

Any and all students are strongly encouraged to for election. The best kind of elected representatives are the ones who are passionate about the student experience, regardless of their background. We are dedicated to providing effective representation and a range of student-led services that

are of a consistently high quality and embrace the needs of all our students. You can help make that happen.

How do elections work?Students nominate themselves and tell us that they’d like to be elected to a particular position. These students then campaign to be elected by persuading people to vote for them. Students can vote online for the person they would like to be elected for a particular position. After results are announced, some posts are taken immediately, with others starting at a later date.

Get involved by visiting www.lsbsu.org/elections to see an up to date list of all our elected officers and dates for the next election.
