FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHURCH! On Pentecost we celebrate the beginning of the Church at the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. They begin the proclamation of the Good News with Peter’s speech in the Acts of the Apostles, which follows the text we hear in our first reading today. He explains the history of salvation and proclaims that God made Jesus “Lord and Messiah.” Acts 2:41 says “those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.” Not a bad days’ work! It presents a wonderful story to us that demonstrates it is through personal witness and proclamation that the gospel is shared. Since Easter Sunday, at daily Mass we have been hearing the stories of the growing Church from the Acts of the Apostles. The Church grows through the guiding gift of the Holy Spirit along with words and actions of the apostles and disciples. That is still true today. We are empowered with the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel, the Good News, in word and deed, standing for all that Jesus taught us, work-ing for the honor and dignity of every human person and respect for all God has created. If that is not hap-pening outside of the walls of our churches, then what we do inside is for naught.

Recent examples of standing for all that Jesus teaches us and honoring the dignity of every person lie in the outreach ministry we did with the overflow homeless shelter during the winter and in the response of many to the call to oppose SB 179 on abortion. We continue to try to be a voice for affordable housing and fair wages. Sadly, the abortion bill passed, in spite of our emails and postcards and all the efforts made. Kudos to our parishioner, Kathleen Rossi, who gathered others for a strong push with the postcards and tes-tified before the legislative committee. While our position was not heard in the final vote, you can rest as-sured that it was heard, and so we must be constant in raising our voices.

Some of you may have seen or heard the news that the Cathedral has filed a petition against the City of Reno regarding a tax they have levied against us. While this is probably not a gospel issue, it is an im-portant tenet of our laws that churches not pay taxes. That is part of a separation of Church and State con-stitutional issue, but also a matter of state statutory law. We filed a protest letter and the city did not respond to it but moved forward with the tax. Apparently, the city is asserting that it is not a tax, but an “assessment”. It is connected to the downtown Business Improvement District (BID) which was created to improve the im-age of downtown by providing services related to such things as cleanup and the homeless crisis and help-ing tourists feel welcome and at ease. To date the city has failed to explain why they distinguish this service fee from any other taxes. While I do not necessarily oppose the BID in principle, I do take issue with the tax. I am hopeful that we can resolve this matter through discussion but, as yet, we have not been contacted by the city to discuss the matter. I have discussed this with our parish Finance Council and will keep you ap-prised of the situation.

With the arrival of Pentecost, we come to the conclusion of the glorious Easter Season. The Paschal Candle will be moved at the end of the last Mass to its proper place by the Baptismal Font. We’ll move into “Ordinary Time” on Monday. It is not ordinary in the sense of being commonplace, but ordinary in the sense of order or ordinal numbers, we move from week to week, picking up where we left off before Lent, now the tenth week. Pentecost gives us the vision of a Church filled with the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures of Ordinary Time reveal to us the life of Christ, one with the Spirit and the Father. We hear the Word and continue to grow toward perfect discipleship, together, supporting, challenging and lifting each other up.

A JOYFUL PENTECOST AND BLESSINGS OF THE TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME TO ALL!
