1.575 km of waterways… a glittering labyrinth in an enchanting, unique landscape. This is
the realm waiting to be conquered from many points of entry either through sports activities
or in a more leisurely fashion by canoe or kayak.
Less sportive but all the more comfortable is an adventure through the waterworld of
the Spreewald by traditional punts which used to be the method of transportation when the
waterways were the only roads in the Spreewald.

Spreewald, a devilish masterpiece ...
A special magic lies over this region. When banks of mist lie over dark streams
and only the cracking of the trees breaks the silence, the door to another world
opens: the Spreewald‘s mythical world.
The “Lutki” dwarves live there as do the merman, lady midday and the snake
king. They are mostly well disposed towards people and add a mystical splendour
to your Spreewald holiday.

The devil incarnate once hitched two large black oxen to his yoke in order to break open the river Spree bed. But the animals did not obey and pulled to the right and then to the left. The devil lost his patience and retreated to hell shouting in anger. Gold from the Spreewald: Linseed oil, won from flax seed, is a typical component of Spreewald cuisine, e.g. with quark cheese. A tablespoon every morning taken on its own or with a salad is particularly healthy thanks to its Omega 3 fatty acids.

Museum of pharmacy in Cottbus. „Stary Lud“ – Museum of slavic Middle Ages.
Visitors should not miss out on the open-air museum in Lehde. With its three old-Wendish farm-houses, it offers a glimpse of how Spreewald residents lived in the 19th century. An historical costume exhibi-
tion, art gallery, pottery and a blueprint workshop convey all there is to know about traditional crafts and Spreewald residents‘ Sorbian roots.

The Memorial Prison of Cottbus is an unusual project in Germany’s com-memorative landscape. Most of the members of the Human Rights Centre of Cottbus, the owner of the memorial, were political prisoners of the former German Democratic Republic. During the Nazi and communist periods, many political opponents of the two dictatorships were imprisoned in the “Royal Central Prison”, which was opened in 1860. Visitors can learn about this history from the exhibitions at the 22,000 m² site. The permanent exhibitions “Checked clouds – political imprisonment in the Cottbus prison 1933-1989” on the ground floor and “FORCED LABOUR in the Cottbus prison 1933-1989” on the 2nd floor, show typical examples of political injustice. Visitors can find out more in the permanent outdoor exhibition “Gone, not forgotten – the Cottbus prison with the passage of time".
