It is the set of sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way
we will go. ~ Jim Rohn
Ahoy, Parents!
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at St. John Elementary! This year, our vision is Raising Our Sails Higher! All hands on deck.as we raise our sails to voyage to higher depths! Our students will SAIL~ Students Active In Learning into improved student achievement, with the guidance of our ship captains! We ask that you all voyage right alongside with us. Your active involvement will help our students sail smoothly through chartered waters.
St. John Elementary is a progressive school that provides excellence in education for all our students, evidenced in exemplary learning opportunities, rigorous standards and assessments, and integration of technology. Educators at SJE are believers in success for every student and create and nurture a healthy school culture in which to thrive. We continue pulling together as an effective team. We want St. John to reflect an elementary school environment, showcasing what and how our students are learning!
Our focus is continued improved student achievement. We will continue to embrace the State Standards in order to successfully prepare our students for college and careers. We rely heavily on the active involvement of all stakeholders and invite them to become active partners in maintaining a healthy, learning culture for our students, staff, and community.
It is very important to us that there is not a gap between our parents and school. One way to make sure that this does not occur is to bridge gaps with effective communication. Our SJE Handbook is filled with important information ensuring proper communication between St. John and your home. We encourage you to read and discuss the St. John Elementary policies and procedures with your child to make certain that all parties are knowledgeable of their roles and responsibilities. We have also implemented many parent/school communication pieces to keep you informed at all times.
SJE students remain a priority to me and providing our students with the most effective learning opportunities is an expectation that will be held to the highest level at all times. Our students are actively involved in our school! It is extremely important that St. John is an inviting, welcoming, and student friendly environment. Decisions are based on looking at the whole picture and what is best for our students, our teachers, and our parents. I appreciate your support, respect your voice, and welcome your input at all times. Together, Im confident that we can achieve success for ALL students! My door is open to you, so please do not hesitate to contact me (337-217-4870).
Sincerely,
Sandy Matthews, Principal

General InformationSt. John Elementary is currently a B (99.2- 2014-15 test results) school that continually strives for excellence in student achievement. We have an enrollment of approximately 800 students and 90 employees at any given time during the school. Although we are a large Pre-K- 5th grade elementary school, we pride ourselves in promoting a welcoming, involved, community school environment.
St. John Elementary is a Title 1 school because the percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch is greater than 40%. Title I provide assistance to improve the teaching and learning of children and is very important to our school. 2016-17 Federal funding from these programs will provide St. John Elementary with one curriculum coordinator, much technology, and support yearly Parent Involvement opportunities that positively affect student achievement.
