Australia is one of the largest wine producing countries in the world, but the category is faltering in the UK on-trade even though Aussie wines have been a favourite for take home having overtaken France some years ago. Australia is the second largest selling wine country in the UK on-trade but the category has underperformed in the past year having lost 13.5% of its volume and 16.5% value in the 12 months to July 2010. The natural fit then across to the on-trade with wines that are of consistent quality and varied and accessible wine styles are just not happening.

The growing strength of the Aussie dollar is one issue with increased cost of export especially where price competition remains as important as ever. Another, is the increased competition from other wine producing countries and the preference of the on-trade for old world wines. However, Australia does have a lot to offer the great British pub and vice versa, thus it remains a largely untapped opportunity for both the producer and the licensee.

So, pubs with a strong and appealing food offering are definitely a growth opportunity for Australian wines, from the entry fruit driven wines to the more premium wines of the Hunter Valley and pretty much anything from Clare and Hunter Valleys as well as the cooler climes of Margaret River and Tazmania’s Tamar region. With the dominance of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Australian producers are looking at alternative floral varieties and varieties such as Semillon, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon are getting a make over.

Our Australian wine portfolio has been revamped bringing in a range of entry fruit driven wines right through to some phenomenal top end wines from the Hunter Valley – have a look at our Mount Pleasant range which are just perfect food partners.

Our new range reflects the diversity that Australia has to offer.......enjoy!

nEW ZEALAnDNew Zealand has unique geographical characteristics which provide it with a surprisingly varied terroir for such a small country. As New Zealand’s largest wine growing region and home of Grove Mill winery, Marlborough has an enviable international reputation for producing the best Sauvignon Blanc in the World.

The UK is New Zealand’s second largest wine export market. New Zealand wines represent only 4.4 percent of the total UK wine imports by value (3.2 percent by volume). There have been some significant issues between supply and demand which the wineries are desperately trying to balance. 2007 saw demand out-strip supply but 2010 saw the reverse with tanks of juice flooding the market and hence some remarkably low prices.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important issue in the UK market. Consumers tend to be well educated and concerned about the environment and especially about sustainability. Grove Mill became famous because of its carbon zero status. The bar of expectation has been raised and new entrants must expect to be scrutinised on their carbon credentials.

We have introduced a number of new flights of New Zealand wine from Neptune Point through to our partner Grove Mill which offer a wonderful range wines from the usual Sauvignon and Pinot Noir to Riesling, Pinot Gris and a late harvest Gewurztraminer.

CALIfORnIACalifornian wines are well known for their high quality, reliability and diversity. California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 100 viticultural areas. California includes dozens of different microclimates and soil types as well as some of the best wine makers in the world.

International demand for California wines continues to grow rapidly. In almost 20 years, exports have increased from $35 million in 1985 to a record $808 million in 2004. This is an average increase of almost 20% per year.

California has now overtaken France as the UK’s second biggest supplier of wine into the Off-trade and continues to grow in strength in the on-trade sector. California are leading with fruit-forward styles of wine, and strong brands, all of which are delivering very easy drinking wines, and have strong connections with the UK consumer. They have absolutely capitalised on the growth in the rosé market.

California is not all about rosé though, with exceptional Zinfandels and Chardonnays and onto Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, California has a wine that will suit any occasion.

James Pettit Wine Merchants have introduced some new flights like the 770 Miles and increased the range one of the country’s leading Californian brands, Jack Rabbit.

SOUTh AfRICAIn 2010 South African wine sales surpassed that of France for the first time in the UK market in terms of volume. South African wine sales grew 20% by volume to 12,270,000 cases, compared to a decline in French wine sales of 12% percent to 12,266,000 cases. South Africa is now the fourth largest selling country for wine in the UK. AC Nielsen.

Although the South African wine industry is over 350 years old, it has only been in its recent history that exports have seen significant growth. A major factor might be explained by a simple fact of currency, the strength of the Pound vs the Rand, but it has to be said that the quality of wine being exported is better than ever.

With perhaps the most recognisable Chenin Blanc and the very distinctive Pinotage performing brilliantly why not try some remarkable Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz which have risen to the challenge and can compete with the rest of the wine producing world.

The wine styles are delivering the new world fruit driven styles right alongside the more food friendly wine style delivering more savoury notes that you would expect from the more established wine countries of Europe.

The stand out styles that move us beyond Chenin and Pinotage are the wonderful varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, the ever impressive Shiraz, the smooth and full bodied Cabernet and the surprisingly wonderful varietals on the periphery like Semillon and Gewurztraminer.

Our two stand out ranges in the portfolio are Kleindal and Boschendal offering exceptional value and quality.

ChILE

KEy REGIOnSCentral Valley, Maipo, Casablanca, Maule Valley,

Limari Valley

KEy GRApE VARIETIESMerlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Pinot Noir,

Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier

The UK is the biggest export market for Chilean wine. Export figures for the year ending December 2010 released by Vinos de Chile show that the UK bought 7.2% more Chilean wine by value in 2010 than in 2009, purchasing 291,182 more cases than in the previous year.

Large-size wineries such as Errázuriz and Concha y Toro lead the way but they are closely shadowed by boutique wineries that keep on grabbing the attention of traders and consumers alike.

Chile’s imported wines flourish in the UK market. Performance in sales and volume in the retail and the restaurant sectors (off-trade and on-trade market, respectively) reached two digits in 2010 while the whole market itself barely managed to grow.

Chile continues to impress the UK public in both the off and on-trade gaining new listings and not just in the entry market. The wines of Chile continue to over deliver at every price point. The Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are in high demand but there is more to Chile than these grape varieties. So look out for the Carmenere , Pinot Noir, Nebbilolo to name just a few outstanding wines.

In recognition of all of the above, we at James Pettit have more than doubled our wine options. We have maintained our fantastic entry range from Volandas, introduced an exquisite range from Lomas Carrera which includes a Carmenere from the central valley, retained the phenomenal Ventisquero offering, and included a reserve Pinot Noir and then onto some exceptional cool climate wines with a Syrah and wild ferment wines from Errazuriz.

fRAnCEThe facts, even with the loss of its share and number one spot in the off-trade, largely due to the increased competition at the low end of the market, France is still hugely important in the on-trade.

The beauty of French wines is that there is so much variety and diversity. There really is something for everyone. From the tried and trusted styles of the more traditional regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Beaujolais, the Loire and the Rhône to the innovative styles and varieties from exemplary wineries in South West France and the Languedoc, France is naturally different. The French have really raised their game when it comes to marketing and winemaking. The overall quality of French wine has never been better and whilst France struggles to compete with some of its competitors at entry level, its mid range and top end sales have seen very strong growth.

We at James Pettit have tasted a whole raft of wines from a whole raft of regions, picking out the best, and have sourced wonderful wines at a variety of price points for you to choose from. Whether it be Classic wines from Burgundy, traditional reds from Bordeaux and the Rhone or rising stars from the South of France we are able to cater for all.

It is worth noting the new categories taking place with quality wines coming out of EU for French wines. Formerly with 4 levels (Vin De Table, Vin De Pays, Vin Délimité de Qualité Superieure and Appellation d’Origine Contrôléé). The reforms will take place from 2012 after the transitional period of 2011.

The new system consists of three categories rather than four, since there will be no category corresponding to VDQS from 2012.

The new categories are:Vin de France, a table wine category replacing Vin de Table, but allowing grape variety and vintage to be indicated on the label.Indication Géographique Protégée, (IGP) an intermediate category replacing Vin de Pays.Appellation d’Origine Protégée, (AOP) the highest category replacing AOC wines.

The largest changes will be in the Vin de France category, and to VDQS wines, which either need to qualify as AOP wines or be downgraded to an IGP category. For the former AOC wines, the move to AOP will only mean minor changes to the terminology of the label, while the actual names of the appellations themselves will remain unchanged. While no new wines will be marketed under the old designations from 2012, bottles already in the distribution chain will not need be relabelled.

RHONEThe Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and produces numerous wines under various Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) designations. The region’s major appellation in production volume is Côtes du Rhône AOC. The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Viognier grapes. The southern sub-region produces an array of red, white and rosé wines, often blends of several grapes such as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

In the past it was sometimes said that Italians kept their best wines to themselves while supplying foreign markets with tasty but anonymous wine. It has to be noted that the markets have changed radically in recent times as consumers in the UK and Italy itself, have insisted on better quality.

For a while it may have seemed that the worldwide trend to standardize vines and wines was bound to compromise Italy’s role as the champion of diversity. But, instead, leading producers in many parts of the country have kept the emphasis firmly on traditional vines. They have taken the authentic treasures of their ancient land and enhanced them in modern wines whose aromas and flavours are not to be experienced anywhere else. Getting to know the unique wines of Italy is an endless adventure in taste. We have worked extremely hard to bring our Italian offering to life with representative examples of the key regions, Abbruzzo, Veneto, Tuscany, and Piemonte. We can bring to you the style and the quality at a reasonable price and deliver a wine that the consumers will love.

On a large number of wine lists, the Italian section tends to carry only a Pinot Grigio. This style of wine has delivered what the consumer was looking for, especially when so much white wine in the market place was heavily oak influenced. Time has moved on a decade and still we find Pinot Grigio in high demand. The issues we now see flooding the market are the bland cheap versions of Pinot Grigio and often influenced by other grape varieties. Our San Giorgio stands out as a leader when compared to these imitations, full flavoured with back bone and elegance.

So whether you are after a Valpolicella, a Chianti Classico Riserva or just something very soft and easy like a classic Montepulciano d’Abbruzzo then rest assured we have it.

Rocco delle Macie

Established in 1973, when Italo Zingarelli decided to realize his lifelong dream by acquiring the “Le Macìe” estate – extending across 85 hectares in all, of which only two were under vine in order to create a winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. PIEMONTE

With 46 different DOC and four DOCG areas, Piedmont is the region that produces the largest number of best known, noble, and world-appreciated prize-winning wines, such as Barbera, Barolo and Asti Spumante. Another distinguished characteristic of Piedmont is that most of its wines are produced on family estates made up of relatively small parcels of land. The main grape grown here is the distinguished Nebbiolo, which is the base for the famed Barolo. Its name derives from the word nebbia, or fog, because of a velvety, whitish coating over its berries in addition to the fact that it grows in an area where, at ripening time in September, heavy morning fog is a given and the humidity that it provides gives the grapes an ideal habitat.

Neirano Barbera d’Asti [C] 6 x 75cl ££ Barbera D’Asti is recognised as the best of all the Barberas’ grown in the Piedmont region. It is produced from 100% Barbera grapes grown around the city of Asti. Spain | 51

SpAInSpain has over 2.9 million acres—making it the most widely planted wine producing nation but it is only the third largest producer of wine in the world, the largest being France followed by Italy. This is due, in part, to the very low yields and wide spacing of the old vines planted on the dry, infertile soil found in many Spanish wine regions.

When most people think about choosing a Spanish wine then Rioja would almost definitely be the one for most occasions, however Spain has so much more, whether you simply enjoy the odd quaff or are a dedicated lover of fine wines Spain will surely have a wine to suit your taste.

Spain is home to some of the most interesting and exciting wines in Europe, made by passionate winemakers and using local varieties. Quality red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero have been at the forefront for many a decade made predominantly from Tempranillo, Outstanding Cavas such as Segura Viudas which has definitely been a heavy hitter delivering superb quality and outstanding value for such quality in the on-trade.

We have gone further though, looking for some wonderful little supers stars in the guise of an entry trio from Valencia, Marquis Del Turia red (Bobal Syrah) white (Viura Sauvignon) and rosé (Bobal Rosé)

James Pettit have also introduced to fantastic pairing, one from Cigales of Museum Crianza and Reserva from just outside of Ribera del Duero and the other from just outside Madrid. Heredad Roble and Crianza. These are outstanding styles and a real point of difference which showcases what Spain has to offer. Ultimately Spain’s success has been the result of innovative winemakers, investors and owners, regional diversity and the rise of native grapes.

Germany

Situated at the northern limit of grape growing, Germany has by and large benefitted from global warming. Vintage 2010, however, was cooler and more classical, with rain at harvest that presented growers with a multitude of challenges. One of which was the low temperatures which affected the fruit set at the time of blossoming.

This year will certainly be the smallest crop in a generation, with the German Wine Institute estimating total harvest at only about seven million hectoliters, approximately 25% less than last year, which was already a deficit vintage. Given the shortage of stock in many cellars and the rising demand for Riesling, many observers thus expect a slight rise in prices. The quality, however, is considered to be good.

hungary

Our Hungarian offering is Tokaji which is the name of the wines from the region of Tokaj-Hegyalja in Hungary. The name Tokaji is used for labeling wines from this wine district. This region is noted for its sweet wines made from grapes affected by noble rot, a style of wine which has a long history in this region.

I’ve seen it written that the Prince of Transylvania, gave the king of France some Tokaji wine from his Tokaj estate as a gift. The Tokaji wine was served at the French Royal court at Versailles, where it became known as Tokay, and delighted with the precious beverage, Louis XV of France offered a glass of Tokaji to Madame de Pompadour, referring to it as “Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” (“Wine of Kings, King of Wines”). This famous line is used to this day in the marketing of Tokaji wines.

portugal

We only carry the Mateus Rosé from Portugal but this is a region of wonderful vineyards and some lovely wines and may be an area for further investigation in years to come.

Product Code Pack Size Price Guide OThER SIZESSInGLE SERVE WInES

With many outlets facing trying times along with changing consumer demands, the 75cl offering is not always what is desired by our customers.

The advent of the single serve bottle has been of real benefit to a number of outlets and we at James Pettit have seen amazing growth and popularity in the single serve wines. The popularity has been in part attributed to the increasing quality and increased range of styles available, as well as the advantages of freshness and ease of serve and a definite control of cost and value for money.

This has seen us increase our range time and time again and in 2011 we see it happening again. We are pleased to now offer our own range One 4 One which we launched in March 2011 and introduced Jack Rabbit alongside our very popular Mini Cellar range.

We have also brought in a Prosecco Valdobbiadene into our business to join our two Cavas in the 20cl size as the popularity of Prosecco grows. The idea of selling a sparkling by the glass has in some cases worried landlords and proprietors alike. So, no longer do we need to worry about waste, one bottle one customer.

The presentation of our wines is superb and will suit any outlet, hotel, gastro bar, golf club, social club or young person’s venue.

With the advent of increased restrictions on outdoor events, regarding glass, we have also introduced PET versions of three stylish mini wines in a tri-layer pack. These look so good they could be mistaken for glass. The life on these products is around a year and we will bring these in for you in good time so long as we are notified in advance.

All in all, this range of wines is a benefit to all. Wine by the glass is a vital part of the on-trade business. The consumer benefits from not having to order a whole bottle and to the outlet, there is greater benefit of greater profit margin.

Champagne & Sparkling | 63

ChAMpAGnE & SpARKLInGThe Champagne and Sparkling category accounts for a quarter of the UK’s volume sales and 50% of its value. It has been noted that allocations of Champagne are being made as demand for Champagne grows on a global scale even though volumes are down and this could lead to a rise in prices as the products gets scarcer. This problem is exacerbated by the yield reduction in the region. The growth of rosé is growing year-on-year at 14% and this should be taken into account on any menu if there is a predominance of woman in an outlet. Our Champagne range has increased to take account of the vast range and styles that are out there and you will be pleased to note that we have something for all including our brand new Jules Feraud HOUSE Champagne, Rosé and the Brut Reserve which won “Best in class, silver division, Wine and Spirit Challenge 2010”. This just shows our huge desire and commitment for quality and range in this category.

Champagne saw a huge decline in 2009 as the category came under huge pressure from its sparkling rivals from around the world, especially from the likes of Cava and in the last couple of years we have seen a huge growth of Prosecco.

Our Reserve Cava from Segura Viudas has seen fantastic growth last year and our prosecco has been in huge demand and as such we have increased our range to include a FRIZZANTE, two SPUMANTE and a top end Valdobbiandene (as well as the baby 20cl bottle).

James Pettit has also introduced a sparkling Pinot Grigio and Pinot Grigio Rosé, which, on the back of the PG market will do very well. It is already gaining listings and will continue to deliver both quality and the style that the consumer is looking for.

The rosé market has been growing from strength to strength these last few years to an all time high of 12.5% and sales breaking the £1 billion barrier in 2010 (Mintel). Mintel are forecasting that the market will double in value over the next five years. In a revival almost as remarkable and unexpected as the recent about-turn of cider, rosé is now being sought by consumers who just can’t get enough of it.

For the third year the rosé market has achieved growth at a phenomenal rate, all the more impressive when seen in context of what would otherwise be a flat wine market. This growth seems to have been driven by the Californian rosés which probably account for around 50% of UK sales in this category and looks to be driven by attracting new wine drinkers looking for these Californian style wines. These USA rosés tend to be lower in alcohol and have higher residual sugar, perhaps suggesting that a younger “less mature” wine drinker has been engaged.

This drive on the pink stuff is not just about new comers though. The excitement generated has also engaged the consumer with a more “mature palate”, as more traditional rosés from Europe and the raft new world entries have picked up sales as well increasing range of style and choice. While rosé wine has been associated with long lazy summers, like the extra cold draught beer market, it is now being seen to be drunk all year round.

The growth of this category has meant that we at James Pettit Wine Merchants, having recognised the importance of this category to your business, have increased our rosé portfolio with a raft of different styles from a whole range of new and old world wine producing countries.

So, this category is not just the preserve of medium to sweet blush wines of USA and Portugal but with more full flavoured styles from Australia, Chile, Spain and South Africa to the delicate rosé of the Provence or Pinot Grigio’s of Italy or the wonderfully new Sancerre rosé, we are able to supply any and all your rosé needs and wants.

“If your list has one blush on your list, seriously consider increasing to two or three styles.”

Tim Nortje, Wine Development Manager

DESSERT WInESHow best to showcase your range of desserts but with an outstanding dessert wine. It need not be a Sauterne as more new world producers are listing wonderful sweet wines at a fraction of the cost.

So why not look for something that is deliciously hedonistic such as a Botrytis Muscat or a late harvest delicate wine, or something really special from Hungary, Tokaji.

To this end we have introduced 5 dessert wines but with two stand out new world options. The first from New Zealand, Grove Mill – late harvest Gewürztraminer and the other from Australia, Campbells Rutherglen Mustcat which won a Silver in the IWC 2009.

With food and wine matching becoming more and more important it is great to realise that our stickies need not just be served with desserts but are wonderful and luxurious on their own after a meal or with a range of cheeses.

pORT

Port wine, or "Porto", is a sweet wine, almost always red, that is fortified with brandy so that its' alcohol level is around 20%. Only fortified wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal can be called Port and although other wines from around the world are produced in a similar style, they will ultimately fail to capture the delicate balance between complexity and elegance, power and finesse of true Port wines.

There are many different styles of Port, Ruby Port which is a young Port made from a blend of wines that have been aged in wood barrels for about 3 years and then bottled. Tawny Ports which are also made of blends of wine aged in barrels. The difference is that the blend is made up of older wines than are used for Ruby Port. Late Bottled Vintage Port is a port from a single vintage that is aged for 4 to 6 years in barrels and then bottled although LBV Port should not be mistaken for Vintage Port, they are of very high quality.

Port is traditionally consumed as an accompaniment to cheeses, with desserts or as a digestif. It is, however, much more versatile. Consider it as any other wine when matching with food. A Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) or a 10-year Tawny is perfect with ‘gamey’ dishes, such as venison, pheasant, and partridge or the heavenly match of an LBV with chocolate and desserts based on strawberries, raspberries, cherries and currants. Port can also be a dessert on its own with a small bowl of nuts or as a digestif after dinner.

ShERRySherry is a fortified wine made from white grapes that are grown near the town of Jerez, Spain. After fermentation is complete, sherry is fortified with brandy and because the fortification takes place after fermentation, most sherries are dry, with any sweetness being added later. The wines are aged for 5 years following the Solera system of blending. Generally speaking, sherry wines fall into two categories, those lighter, drier styles which are aged under a living layer of yeast called flor (examples: fino, manzanilla, amontillado), and those which are subject to oxidative ageing, and tend to be higher in alcohol and house different flavour characteristics, oloroso sherries.
