Most Singaporeans will argue that kopi’s just not the same as (and perhaps even superior to) regular coffee. Unlike Arabica beans used in most cafés, Robusta beans – they’re slightly more acidic and bear deeper flavours – are wok-roasted with sugar and margarine until they turn deep brown. The beans are then ground and brewed with a sock strainer and tall silver kettle. Kopi comes in many forms, and the basic version is hot brewed coffee with condensed milk and sugar stirred in.

Let the robust flavours of your kopi take centre stage in this breakfast favourite. ‘Kosong’ means ‘empty’ in Malay, so this option is essentially an unsweetened kopi-C – just coffee, water and Carnation milk.

Perhaps inspired by one of the late King of Pop’s best-known refrains – “it don’t matter if you’re black or white” – this sweet treat combines freshly brewed soya milk with grass jelly in a marbled, black-and-white beverage. Skip the straw for this one and be sure to sink your teeth into those refreshing grass jelly squares.

If you don’t quite have a sweet tooth, get your dose of caffeine in the form of a kopi-siu-dai – ‘siu dai’ is Hock Chew for ‘less sweet’. With one part coffee to two parts water, paired with condensed milk and just a dash of sugar, it delivers the perfectly balanced caffeine kick.

The Milo Dinosaur is named so for its size because this drink is huge. A mug of iced Milo (a thick chocolate malt beverage) is mixed with condensed milk, then topped with a generous scoop of powdered Milo. If you’re ready to up the ante, you can even order a Milo Godzilla – essentially a Milo Dinosaur with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. This sweet treat is, unsurprisingly, a favourite with the young ones.

This traditional Indonesian dessert may look a tad unappetising at first glance – after all, the drink is laden with tiny bits of green jelly. But make no mistake, those pandan-flavoured jellies (made with rice paste and food colouring) are a joy to slurp! Coconut milk, red beans and crushed ice complete the treat, with gula melaka (palm sugar) adding the sweet chase of caramel.

Rounding off the list is teh tarik, one of Singapore’s most famous and beloved breakfast beverages. Tea dust is steeped in spices like cardamom and ginger, then stirred with evaporated and condensed milk. After the tea is strained, the ‘tarik’ (Malay for ‘pull’) part comes in. The tea is ‘pulled’ from one cup to another at varying heights of up to one metre – this cools it down and creates its trademark frothy cap.

Start your day strong with a kopi-O, which is the equivalent of a long black – ‘O’ means ‘black’ in the Hokkien dialect. Sans condensed milk, this strong concoction is equal parts coffee and water, with a teaspoon of sugar to ease the bitterness. Like your coffee with that extra bitter kick? You can opt for a ‘kopi gao’ (a thicker brew) or go full ‘kopi-O kosong’ (coffee black, no sugar) if you want to forgo any sweetener altogether.

If a caffè latte is your go-to drink, ask for a kopi-C. The local equivalent is a blend of coffee, water and evaporated milk (unsweetened condensed milk) in a 3:2:1 ratio. And if you’re wondering what the ‘C’ stands for, it’s ‘Carnation’ (not ‘condensed’, contrary to popular belief) – a popular brand of evaporated milk.

Quench your thirst with something a little more traditional by ordering a

kopi-O, chendol, or other local favourites. Pro tip: sip on these drinks the

super Singaporean way – from old-school kopitiam (traditional coffee shop)

glass mugs, or out of little take-away plastic bags.

Asian Tigers Singapore - 2017 Company Incentive Trip to Bangkok

A company incentive trip to Bangkok for the Asian Tigers Singapore employees and their families took place earlier this year. Taking advantage of the Easter weekend, staff and family took a short break staying at the Indra Regent Hotel, Bangkok which is centrally located in the Bangkok downtown area. A sumptuous dinner welcomed the company and 83 Long Service Awards were presented to 7-year, 10-year, 15-year, 20-year, 25-year, 30-years, 35-year and 45-year dedicated employees. Our Chairman, Eric Lim was himself presented with his 40-year service award. Bill and Debbie Reinsch of our Asian Tigers Thailand office were also present at the dinner.

Coincidently, Thailand was celebrating their Songkran (Water) Festival during the trip and many staff experienced the ‘water-blessing’ in the hot weather. All had a wonderful time shopping and dining in the many malls and markets that Bangkok is so famous for.

Did You Know?Singlish – English no one else understands

It never fails to amuse locals when foreigners try (and fail miserably) to use Singlish, Singapore’s own animated colloquial slang. But that doesn’t mean visitors shouldn’t learn a couple of expressions. When bargaining, you can say: “So expensive! Cheaper can? I no money lah.” Singlish is a blend of the country’s many languages and dialects, including the Queen’s English, Bahasa Melayu, Tamil, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Bengali and Punjabi.

While some Singaporeans frown on Singlish as an embarrassing crime against grammar, others see it as a colorful and unique expression of the nation’s multi-culturism.

Soggy pitches didn’t prevent the season’s final games from being hotly contested. Parents of our youngest players enjoyed seeing how their children had improved over the eight-month ANZA Soccer season, both in soccer skills and in knowledge of the game. Team spirit was obvious, and when the final whistles blew, there were high-fives, handshakes, and hugs. Players in the older age groups had already finished their season-long League competitions, usually a double round-robin with a points-based winner, so the ANZA Cup was a last chance for fame. Crisp passing, dazzling dribbling, and spectacular goals and saves excited spectators, and many of these games came down to their final minutes or even penalty shoot-outs. Most age groups also had an ANZA Plate competition, so teams in the lower half of the group could earn bragging rights.

All players finally gathered on the covered pitches to receive their medals, trophies, certificates, and special awards from coaches and AGCs, graciously aided by special guests including ANZA President PJ Roberts, New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Dr Jonathan Austin, and Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Mr Bruce

Gosper. Individual trophies for each team’s Most Improved Player and Best and Fairest Player were presented. In each age group, one team was also awarded the Foreman Fair Play award, named for one of ANZA Soccer’s founding families. Each team player received a certificate congratulating the team’s “outstanding commitment to the ANZA Soccer Fair Play ideals of playing hard, maintaining a positive attitude, working as a team, and encouraging everyone on the pitch to enjoy each game.”

ANZA Soccer ended their 41st season in style. We congratulate all the players for bringing energy and enthusiasm to each game, and we thank their parents for supporting them. We acknowledge our parent coaches, team managers, and committee members, without whom the program could not exist. We recognize our grounds staff and professional coaching staff, led by Head Coach Yakob, who work ceaselessly to make each practice and game day run smoothly. Thank you for your continued support Asian Tigers Mobilty, we couldn’t do it without you! We look forward to another great season starting in August! Stamford American Interact Club achieved more than what they believed they could, in collecting 9,325 books and raising $8,568!

This could not have been achieved without Asian Tigers Mobility support in donating the boxes. The books that were unsold are now being shipped to India using the boxes they donated. These will set up a library in a rural Indian Village.

A huge thank you from all at Stamford American Interact Club!

On 1 June 2017, Asian Tigers Singapore’s clientele went on an informative walking tour with Ms Helena in Kampong Glam. It is the traditional heart of Singaporean Muslim life. Since early colonial days the area has attracted Muslims from diverse ethnic backgrounds, fusing them into one community by their common faith and lifestyle.

Our first stop was Haji Lane, the smallest street in Singapore with colourful murals on the shophouse walls; and Arab Street, where historic shophouses selling textiles, basketry, perfumes, pashminas and sarongs together with traditional Muslim food offerings plus Western and Malay restaurants can be found. It really does create a wonderful blend of cultures.

Our next stop was the island’s largest mosque, the Sultan Mosque, a landmark in Kampong Glam. This majestic building was built in honour of Sultan Hussein of Singapore.

We were invited into the Mosque and saw the huge prayer room which can hold up to 5,000 people at one time. As it was the Ramadan month on the Islamic lunar calendar, our tour guide explained the significance and ritual of fasting – one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

We stopped at a number of shops and met the owners who talked to us about their role in the community. The Muslim Perfumery was excellent. We uncovered a curious blend of Malay folk traditions and Islam legends with the mysterious ‘keris’ (dagger), exotic perfumes, ‘jamu’ remedies to every conceivable ailment and the story of the faith that is so often misunderstood.

It was an excellent and entertaining tour to learn about another race and culture of Singapore. Please visit www.journeys.com.sg for more tours.
