What are you most nervous about?
Myths – BUSTED!(AKA things no one tells you!)
Myth #1 You can wing it and still be OK
Truth: Get organized NOW!
1. Get a planner! And use it!
2. Walk your path to your classes – work out the timing
3. Locate your Academic Advisor’s office, put their phone number and email into your phone
Myth #2 Your instructors will make sure you understand everything
Truth: It’s your responsibility to read all materials and plan accordingly
1. Know all course components and how to use D2L
2. Exam schedule nuances
– Common exams
– Exams all on same day!
– Fewer second chances and little to no “extra credit”
3. Work with Integrity
Myth #3 It’s all about your classes and grades
Truth: Getting involved beyond the classroom will enrich your college experience, strengthen
your persistence, and prepare you for the future
1. Find your community, make new friends
2. Get out of your room and embrace the college experience
3. Engage in activities to learn more about yourself and what you love
4. Try new things – be uncomfortable
5. Join us today for our College Welcome Event
100% ENGAGEMENT
"Exploring Cytomegalovirus (CMV) under Dr. Goodrum has been one of the most beneficial and humbling experiences of my college career.” Bre EderBIO5 Institute
"You read a book, you do the math problems — it only gets you so far. This is a great opportunity to get the students into
a real-world experience where they’re able to understand what all their class and lab work has been going toward.”
Aaron FaberRaytheon Research Scientist
"Serving on the Green Fund Committee has been one of the most rewarding activities of my entire student career. It's more than a pathway to becoming involved in campus sustainability decisions, it's also a great way to develop and practice leadership skills.”Kerrie GeilGreen Fund Committee Member

Myth #4 – You can keep studying like you did in high school
Truth: a new and more challenging learning environment will require new strategies
1. Be a self-directed learner; create your own study and practice structure – less hand-holding
2. Plan to spend 2 hours/week on outside of class learning for each hour spent in class
3. Expect learning to be effortful
4. Your brain can change! Don’t quit!
5. To Learn, Retrieve
Learning is enhanced by implementing “retrieval” strategies where the retrieval is most effective when you are starting to “forget”.
6. Mix Up Your Practice-Interleaving
Spacing practice by allowing time to elapse between sessions makes the practice more potent, producing stronger learning and memory.
Myth #5 People will watch out for you
Truth: Advocate for yourself and what you need
1. Adopt a growth mindset – be resilient, you WILL face challenges! Give it time
2. Ask for help – a sign of strength
3. Learn where to get help for various needs
4. Attend all classes, even though attendance may not be taken
5. Go to office hours, talk with your instructors and professors
6. Work hard, eat well, & play well; find your sense of wellbeing and balance
