Dear Friends,

It’s hard for me to believe that it has been two years since Carol and I were away for three months on my sabbatical exploring the linkage between faith and creativity. I can’t thank you (and the Lily Endowment which paid for it) enough for giving me this life-changing opportunity!

Since our return in August, 2017, we hosted the Rev. Karla Kincannon to present a faith and creativity workshop, I taught two art courses (drawing and stone carving), ten members of the church designed and created six beautiful new stained glass windows now gracing our lobby, and I and others have sculpted a large limestone Celtic Cross which will soon be erected somewhere on our church grounds.

Not only that, but others now want to design and create another six stained glass windows for the newer Narthex upper windows! And, I’ve co-taught two day-long retreats on Celtic Spirituality at Stella Niagara’s Center of Renewal with Sister Colleen Shanahan.

I hope and pray that you find these summer months not only a season of recreation, but a time of re-create-tion as well! If you don’t have a hobby or art or craft to explore already, I hope you will find one that feeds your soul.

We are made in God’s image, and I take that to mean that we are called to be co-creators with God. We are called to mindfulness: to notice the beauty of God’s creation and to create beauty in our lives, in our relationships, and in our world.

Yours in God’s Creating,

Rex Taylor StewartPastor and Artist

Youth and Children’s MinistriesDirector: Michelle Allen

The weather may not demonstrate it, but summer is in full swing at YCM--June has been packed with activity and July and August will be just as full with faith formation and fellowship!

We kicked off June with our annual YCM Sunday worship service and church family picnic on Sunday, June 2nd. The children who led worship did a phenomenal job as we honored and lived out the truth that God wants children in worship! And a special thank you to Dick Allen for once again grilling 100 hot dogs for our picnic! The following week, June 9th, we celebrated Pentecost by welcoming fourteen new members from the Confirmation class. Not missing a beat, on Sunday, June 23rd we celebrated with all of our graduates at a lovely Baccalaureate Brunch. Thank you to Monica Barner for making the delicious French toast casseroles and to all the volunteers who helped set up, serve, and clean up after! Somewhere in the midst of all that, we even squeezed in a Garage Sale Fundraiser that generated $1000 to support our upcoming Mission Trip!

And on Sunday, June 30th, our youth will head out to Rochester, NY for another amazing Mission Trip week. 20 teenagers and 5 adults will spend a life-changing week helping the working poor in very impoverished neighborhoods. Thanks to our leaders: Joyce Casper, Beth McCalister, and Garrett Swearingen (plus Carla and me). Every youth says how much they see and feel God’s presence during mission trip week. I encourage ALL adults to be a chaperone at least once in their life: just ask Joyce, Beth, and Garrett how AWESOME it is!

Less than two weeks after we return from mission trip, our WNY Presbytery delegation will head to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium in Indiana, where several of our youth will connect with five THOUSAND Presbyterian high schoolers from around the globe for five days of programs, small group discussions, and worship.

There will be no time for rest after Triennium as we immediately jump into decorating and preparing for VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL, July 29th- August 2nd. The church will transform into an outer space extravaganza! Once again, we anticipate hosting about 100 community children and sharing God’s love with them through art, science, drama, games, music, and munchies. In addition to all the participants, we have over 70 volunteer helpers! From donations, to decorating, to giving time and energy during the week, It would be difficult to find a church member who WASN’T involved in VBS in one way or another! As our church’s most comprehensive outreach of the year, God’s spirit is palpable throughout this amazing week. We all GO BEYOND with God!

Finally, after all the frenzy, we will spend a relaxing weekend camping from August 9-11. This is the first trip our incoming sixth graders enjoy with youth group, and it is a much-loved tradition.

I feel deeply blessed to be a part of Youth and Children’s Ministries. We plant seeds of faith that I honestly believe will change lives and therefore change the world. I know God has led me to where I am; I trust God will give every one of us our daily bread; I feel God in every breath; I see God in every member of our community of faith. I THANK GOD for each of you!

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.”Philippians 1:3-4

Grace and peace,Michelle

Deacons CornerFriends, just a reminder, the Deacons’ closet has a lot of different medical appliances available for your use. They are generally accessible during church office hours. But connect with me if that’s difficult.

We have plenty of canes, a variety of walkers, shower chairs, different toilet seats, lots of crutches.

There’s a small wheelchair ramp that would work in one’s house. We have some items I can’t even identify! If you need something you can’t quite explain, let me know and I’ll be glad to show you what we have.

One item we are short on…wheelchairs. We have none now, although one will be returned next week. Please let me know of an unused wheelchair in decent condition, and I’ll be glad to pick it up.

Contact me at 425-0701, or email me [email protected].

This is a support group for people suffering from bereavement. It will be offered at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100

Church Street. The group will meet at 1:30 pm on Thursdays.

The group will be led by Sister Colleen Shanahan from Stella Niagara. She says that

the group will be based on Kubler-Ross’s “Five Stages of Death and Dying” and how

that effects us physically, spiritually, mentally, and socially. Everything at the meetings will be confidential. We believe that healing comes in these sessions through (1) verbally expressing your own version of grief and (2) the support

you find from others’ experience.

This is an ecumenical group, open to all people.
