The Facts:

The standards:

Are aligned with college and work expectations; Are clear, understandable and consistent; Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; Build upon strengths and lessons from current state standards; Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are

prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and Are evidence-based, meaning that this learning is based on educational

research and has been proved to ensure that students are prepared to become lifelong learners.

Where did they come from?Concerns about the college readiness of students graduating from high

schools in the United States spurred the development of the CCSS in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Studies of students who were successful in college and their academic and behavioral maturity caused governors of many states to come together with the Council of Chief State School Officers, such as State Superintendents of Education, to work with educators to design curriculum and instruction so that students are college and career ready for the 21st Century.

The CCSS is the academic framework that was produced to ensure that students will be successful beyond high school.

Why do we need CCSS?

Standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but they do help teachers figure out the knowledge and skills their students should have so that teachers can build the best lessons and environments for their classrooms.

Standards also help students and parents by setting clear and realistic goals for success. Standards are a first step – a key building block – in providing our young people with a high-quality education that will prepare them for success in college and work.

Of course, standards are not the only thing that is needed for our children’s success, but they provide an accessible roadmap for our teachers, parents, and students.

Why do we need CCSS?

We need standards to ensure that all students, no matter where they live, are prepared for success in postsecondary education and the workforce.

Common standards will help ensure that students are receiving a high quality education consistently, from school to school and state to state.

Common standards will provide a greater opportunity to share experiences and best practices within and across states that will improve our ability to best serve the needs of students.

2012-2013

 • All staff working with students will receive CCSS. They are to be used

throughout the course of the year as you teach your content to determine what you will continue to teach, stop teaching, and what will need to be altered to meet the depth of the new standards. This will also give us an opportunity to examine our current resources to see where they still assist us and where we my need to supplement with other resources.

 • Throughout the year, all staff will be expected to learn the CCSS, provide

information about your grade level changes and what resources you need.

• Staff Training on universal screening and benchmark tool district-wide

 • All staff will begin teaching CCSS and using resources

that are identified in assisting teachers in achieving the CCSS for their specific students. This will still be a work in progress and we know that changes will be made as we continue to define our instruction.

• Staff pilot of universal screening and benchmark tool district-wide

Teachers/Leaders

Our most effective teachers show that great teaching is leadership….. In every highly effective classroom, we find a teacher who, like any great leader, rallies team members (students) around an ambitious vision of success. We find a teacher who plans purposefully and executes effectively to make sure students reach that vision, even as that teacher also continues to learn and improve. ( Farr, 2010, p.30)
