SHAW NOW HAS “SYNREVOICE”

Shaw now has “Synrevoice”, an automated phone messaging service. So far we’ve been using this service to make daily

attendance calls to those families whose children are absent without a reason being provided. We’ve also used it to send

out school-wide messages. This year’s Holiday Bake Sale, for example, gave us the opportunity to experiment with

sending out a personal reminder to all of our families.

In the new year, we’ll be using Synrevoice to inform parents of school closures due to inclement weather, bus cancella-

tions, special events and other important reminders. Some of these messages will be in the automated voice provided by

this service and others will have been recorded and sent by members of our staff. Whichever type of message is broad-

cast, the goal will be the same - reaching out to our community with news and information about its school.

HOLIDAY BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER

On Wednesday, December 4th, members of the School Council once again held their Holiday Bake Sale. This

year, their goal was to raise the money needed to purchase Filla Saphire 7 tablet computers for our classrooms.

With donations of baked goods prepared by council members and by members of our community, the event

was extremely successful! The Council members raised a total of $554.08, after expenses, bettering last year’s

total by and astounding $259.61!

A special “thank you” goes out to Mrs. Monga and her group of parent volunteers. Without the support of

these individuals, the bake sale would not have been possible.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT

In order to attend school in Ontario, your child must have an up-to-date immunization record. When you register your

child for school, you will provide copy of your child's immunization record and the school will send it to Peel Health.

After registration, keeping your child's records up to date is your responsibility. Peel Health reviews immunization re-

cords regularly. Students who are not completely immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be allowed to

attend school.

For information about immunization, or to get a copy of your child's record, call Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.

Translation services are available.

GRADE ONE FRENCH IMMERSION

Children who are currently in Year 2 Kindergarten are eligible to register in a French Immersion program for

Grade 1. Due to the intensive nature of this program, the only opportunity to enter French Immersion is at the

start of Grade 1, where the instruction provided is delivered almost entirely in French. Otherwise, regular

Core French instruction begins for all students in Grade 4 and Extended French is offered as an option for stu-

dents in Grade 6.

What is the French Immersion program like? What are the advantages and features of the program? How can

I tell if it is the right choice for my child? To provide the answers to these questions, interested parents are in-

vited to attend a French Immersion Information Night on Tuesday, January 21st at Fairlawn Public School,

located at 40 Fairlawn Boulevard. Fairlawn is the French Immersion school for our community.

To register at Fairlawn for the 2014 - 2015 school year, parents must acquire a School Transfer Form from our

office. This transfer form along with your child’s birth certificate are the two pieces of documentation re-

quired by the registration deadline of Friday, January 31, 2014.

If you think that French Immersion might be right for your Kindergarten child who is entering Grade 1 next

September, please give our friends at Fairlawn a call at 905-843-2927 to make registration arrangements.

O.F.I.P. TUTORING RETURNS JANUARY 8TH

Using grant money made available to us by the Ministry of Education through its Ontario Focused Interven-

tion Partnership, Shaw will once again be providing after-school tutoring sessions for specifically targeted

groups of students in Grades 1 to 3. This ten-week program, which will be offered every Tuesday and Thurs-

day from 3:30 p.m. until 4:20 p.m., begins on Tuesday, January 14th and will conclude on Thursday, March

27th, 2014.

The parents of those children who will be participating in this program are reminded to be prompt in picking

their children up in the foyer of the school. We recommend that you arrive no later than 4:15 p.m.

LEGO ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT WINNERS!

On Saturday, December 7th, Mr. Orazem and Ms Som-

merville escorted the members of the Technology Club, to

the annual Lego Robotics Tournament at Rick Hansen

Secondary School. Shaw’s two teams were competing

against thirty-three other teams from twenty-five other

schools, some of which were middle schools with much

older students. This is the third year that our students have

participated in the event and the results were outstanding!

One of our two teams, in fact, won the Robot Performance

Award and came back to Shaw with a beautiful trophy and

certificate!

Congratulations to our Technology Club members: Ar-

shaan Asim, Tripat Buttar, Harkanwal Gill, Hussein Husein, Vansh Jani, Jot Sandhu, Kazima Dur-E-Samin,

Krisha Patel, Harsh Chaudhary, Rovin Parasnauth, Jaap Sarran, Arawen Sivaranjan, Vishesh Suthar, Karan

Sidhu and Jasanjot Gill.

A special thank you is extended to Mr. Orazem and Ms Sommerville for all of the time that they invested during their

Nutrition Breaks over the past 2 1/2 months preparing our students for the competition and for also giving up an entire

Saturday to make this experience possible for them.

GREAT MATH WEBSITE FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

There is a great website posted by the Ministry of Education that contains a wide range of math resources, games, activi-

ties and translated materials for students, parents and teachers. Check it out! The web address is:

SHAW’S FIRST FAMILY ACTIVITY NIGHT

As the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, and the pictures above clearly illustrate the fun time that was

had by all at our first Family Activity Night on December 10th. With representatives from the Brampton Beast hockey

team, local fitness centres, other sports teams and our Public Health Nurse, this well-attended event raised everyone’s

awareness of just what services are available in our community and what activities are available to our children. The

events supervised by our teachers in the gym, put everyone’s hockey skills to the test that night!

A special thank you goes out to Mr. Partynski for organizing the event and to Mr. Luu, Ms Cook, Mr. Yan, Ms Bum-

baco, Ms DaMaren, Ms Sommerville, Mr. Loughnane, Mrs. Ingham and Mrs. Romeo for the time that they put into

running the various activities.
