Attachments and Transitions

Aim: to promote an understanding of how to support children during

separation and transitions

Today:

Today our objectives are:

• Describe attachment theory and separation anxiety

• Relate these stages to Bowlby’s theory

• List possible transitions 0-19years

•Breakdown the possible affects on development

• Summarise own role in supporting transitions 0-19 years

Transition

• What do we mean by the term transition?

How did you feel..

• When you first found out you had an interview or needed to attend an induction?

• When you went to visit/work in the setting for the very first time?

• When you came to college for the first time?

These are just a few changes that you as an adult faced in a very

short period of time, imagine how many the children you look after go

through…

How do you know a child is anxious?

“Children’s earliest and strongest relationship are usually with their

parents”

“These special relationships are called “attachments”

(Beith et al, 2005, pg121)

Stages of Anxiety

Protest

Despair

Detachment

John Bowlby

• In your own words briefly describe Bowlby’s theory and how it affects your setting’s practice.

Transitions

• In pairs

- Think of all the regular transitions a child might experience 0-19yrs

- You can complete a timeline if this helps.

We have looked at transitions that most children and young people

face but what other transitions may children and young people

experience?

Strategies to support transitions

In pairs:Select one regular transition and one transition

that a child may face and explain in detail how you and the setting will support the

child through each change.

How might these transitions affect a child’s behaviour and their holistic development,

think about interdependence and emotional development.

Timeline

• In a different colour add in how you will support the child through this transition.

Affects on Development and Behaviour

Why is it important that children have positive relationships

during transitions?

Policies and Procedures

• What are your setting’s policies and procedures for settling in?

• For homework read through the relevant policies in your setting and complete a policy summary sheet, this can be used in your assignment.

Today our objectives were:

• Describe attachment theory and separation anxiety• Relate these stages to Bowlby’s theory• List possible transitions 0-19years•Breakdown the possible affects on development • Summarise own role in supporting transitions 0-19 years

List two things you can now do to support a child through a

transition
