Then 15 groups of four teams were set up. Two teams in each four-team group played head-to-head for 32 boards. The winners automatically qualified for the second round and had the evening off. For Dr. John Fisher, playing at a North Ameri-can Bridge Championship is a return to the scenewhere he was a mainstay during the Fifties, Sixties,Seventies and part of the Eighties.

“Those were exciting times – qualifying and finalsrounds with everybody thrown into the pot. I comehome from a tournament now and with all the differentevents, I don’t know who won what,” says Fisher, aretired physician who lives in Dallas.

Not quite enoughDoug Simson and Eric Rodwell finished sev-

Simson, South, led a low spade, and when declarerplayed low from dummy, Rodwell’s 9 forced the ace.Simson ducked as declarer led a heart to the jack, buthe won the ♥K continuation. Simson continued his at-tack on trumps, leading the queen to dummy’s king. After ruffing a heart, declarer tried his luck in diamonds, leading to the king. But Rodwell took his ace and con-tinued with the ♦J to partner’s queen. Simson fired backa fourth heart, and Rodwell was able to score a ruff, thanks to partner’s earlier trump leads. Declarer stillhad a trump loser plus one loser in both diamonds andclubs, so Simson and Rodwell scored plus 200 for al-most all the matchpoints.

He won the McKenney Trophy (now the BarryCrane Top 500) in 1972 and remembers that Crane, the masterpoint guru who usually determined who wonthe race in those days, was determined that Fisher wouldwin. “The year I won, he drove me with a whip. Theminute he thought I was slowing down, he crackedthat whip.”

The last time he played “serious bridge” at anNABC, says Fisher, was the 1990 Spring NABC in FortWorth. He’s playing here in Kansas City in the SilverRibbon Pairs with Tarek Radjef of Dallas.

Most of the time, however, Fisher is content to playin tournaments in Texas and Shreveport LA (with long-time friends Betty Ann and Jack Kennedy). He retiredfrom practicing medicine in 1993. “Now I play bridge, travel and dine and wine with friends.”

John FisherContinued from page 1

Some of the more interesting hands are interspersedthrough the book. However, the book dwells primarilyon how he reacted to the daily turmoil of bridge, bridge, bridge. Altogether he played in three North Americanchampionship, 41 regionals, three sectionals and eightclub games. Most of the time he played two sessions aday, but there were frequent days on which he com-peted three times, adding a morning knockout to thetwo sessions in the afternoon and evening.

Barrow is here in Kansas City. He was invited byseveral players to compete in the Vanderbilt, but hesees this as a year for relaxation – “now I’m doing alot of fishing.” So he’s playing in the Silver RibbonPairs.

What was it like to chase the record?“It was a miserable experience. I worried about

masterpoints all the time. I worried about whether Iwas meeting my goals. I worried about the bad start Igot. I worried.

“The trouble was I had a tiger by the tail. Once Igot started I couldn’t let go. It’s a debilitating experi-ence.”

With whom did he earn most of his points?“I got about 900 with David Adams, 800 with Jim

Robison and 600 with John Potter. But many othershelped me along the way.”

But the Year of the Record Run and the Year of theBook are over. It’s time to go fishing.

Stripped for actionBy Barry Rigal

Having proved myself truly unqualified on Fri-day, Saturday was devoted to playing the StratifiedPairs. At last I got my chance to do a spot of cardreading.

♠ K 7♥ K 8 5 3♦ K J 10 3♣ A 8 3

After a routine 1♦-1♠ ; 1NT auction, my partner,Justine Cushing, put me in 3NT. Slam on the North-South hands is quite possible – maybe the South handqualifies for an old-fashioned jump shift – but 3NT wasthe popular spot.

On the ♣Q lead, it was obvious to win and play offfour rounds of spades. East followed twice and pain-lessly let go of a small heart and club.

I won the club return and cashed the fifth spade, asEast threw another heart. I cashed the ♥A K whichwrung a second club out of East. Now it was easy tocash the ♦A and exit with the last club. East could winbut had to return a diamond into the K–J at the end fora precious second overtrick.

Happy St. Pat’s Dayfor directing staff

Connie Witt of Lincoln NE apparently has a softspot for the directing staff. She believes their hard workshould be rewarded, and she chose St. Patrick’s Day tosay thank you in her own way. She prepared and deliv-ered a platter of green cookies to the staff Saturday, along with a card saying, “Thank you for all you do tomake duplicate bridge fun and pleasant.”

Partners againOne of the pairs in the Vanderbilt is a rebirth of

a partnership that flourished back in the early Six-ties. Dan Rotman and Ivar Stakgold are playing to-gether again after a hiatus of more than 35 years.

Change of planBy Barry Rigal

Our opponents found a way to the 5-2 dia-mond fit rather than the 5-2 heart fit in the firstqualifying session of Open Pairs I. It led to a fas-cinating end position.

I was playing with Justine Cushing. Our oppo-nents were Richard and Mary Oshlag.

On the lead of the ♠J to the queen and king, fol-lowed by the ♠A and a low spade, Oshlag discardeda heart loser. I could ruff but all I collected in duecourse was one more trump trick.

The interesting defense is if Cushing presses onwith the ♠10 at trick three. Obviously declarer hasto ruff in. If he ruffs high, I discard, so it looks logi-cal to ruff low.

Overruffing the ♦2 with the ♦3 seems to achievenothing so it looks better to discard a club and try toobtain control. Now declarer changes tack: he crossesto the ♣ A and finesses in hearts, cashes the ♥A andruffs a heart. This is the new position when declarerruffs another club to hand:

♠ -- ♠ 8♥ 10 6 ♥ --♦ A Q 9 ♦ J♣ -- ♣ Q 5 4

Now declarer leads a fourth heart and it doesNorth no good to ruff with the ♦K so declarer scoresthe ♦J in dummy. Now declarer leads the ♠8, pitch-ing his last heart and collecting two trump tricks atthe end.

A 10-point differenceJim Tritt and Richard Meffley, winners of Open

Three spades, one heart, three diamonds and oneclub was good for plus 120 and 57.5 matchpoints outof a possible 77 matchpoints.

Varis Carey, left, and Henry Bethe finished 2nd inOpen Pairs I.

Four trump tricksmake the difference

Varis Carey and Henry Bethe, who finished sec-ond in Open Pairs I, found a neat defense to defeat 3♥on this deal from the first final session. However, it isclear that declarer’s play was far from perfection.

Bethe, South, led a low diamond to the jack, anddeclarer quickly cashed the king. Then he crossed tothe ♣A and pitched his last club on the ♦A. After ruffinga club, he led a trump to the jack, and Carey took hisqueen. He shot back a diamond, ruffed with the 3 andoverruffed by Bethe with the king. Bethe shifted backto clubs, ruffed by declarer.

He led the ♠J, ducked, but when he continued withthe 10, Bethe won and gave partner a spade ruff. Careyled another club, setting up Bethe’s trump 10 en passant.Down one as the result of taking four (!) trumps andthe ♠A.

Yes, declarer certainly could have done better. Af-ter taking the first two diamonds, he could lead a trumpto the jack and queen. North probably would fire backa club to dummy’s ace, but declarer would win andcash the top diamond to get a club pitch. Then a heartto the ace would limit the defense to just two trumpsand the ♠A, making four.

Answers to Trivia Quiz(Questions on page 2)

1. Somerset Maugham, famous novelistand short story writer, once called bridge “themost intelligent and entertaining card game thewit of man so far has devised.” He often usedcard playing in his settings. He wrote the firstplay in theater history to feature bridge. InThree Fat Women of Antibes, three middle-aged women are looking for a congenialfourth. He wrote the introduction to CharlesGoren’s The Standard Book of Bidding.

His verdict on bridge is memorable. “If I hadmy way, I would have children taught bridge asa matter of course, just as they are taught danc-ing. In the end it will be more useful to them . . .You can play bridge as long as you can sit at atable and tell one card from another. In fact, whenall else fails – sport, love, ambition – bridge re-mains a solace and an entertainment.”

His observations on the requirements forplaying bridge: “The essentials for playing agood game of bridge are to be truthful, clear-headed, and considerate, prudent but not averseto taking a risk, and not to cry over spilt milk. And incidentally those are perhaps also theessentials for playing the more important gameof life.”

2. Judi Radin. A World Bridge FederationGrand Master, she won the World Women’s Pairsin 1978, the World Women’s Team Olympiad in1984, the Venice Cup in 1987 and the McConnellCup in 1994. She also placed second in the VeniceCup in 1981 and 1985 and the World Women’sPairs in 1990. She is an ACBL Grand Life Mas-ter with 14,611 masterpoints.

Jason Hackett takes chances at the bridge table, but that’snot the only place. Here he is shown taking a 440-footplunge on a bunjee jump at the place where bunjee jumpinggot started near Queenstown, New Zealand. He took threejumps in all. His twin brother Justin just watched. TheHacketts, once the terrors of the Junior circuit (they wonthe World Junior Team championship in 1975), now playall over the world, usually successfully. When the number 3 seeds met on the first roundof the evening session, expert #1 boasted proudlythat he had beaten up on expert #2’s wife earlierthat afternoon. Pride goeth before a fall and ahaughty spirit before destruction, they say.

♠ K 4 3♥ J 10 6 4♦ 7 6 5♣ 9 8 2

♠ 10 6 2 ♠ Q J 7 5♥ Q 8 5 3 ♥ K 2♦ K Q 10 4 ♦ A 8 3♣ J 4 ♣ A K 10 3

A routine Stayman auction to 3NT saw South leada club to the 10, a good start for declarer. A low spadeto the 8, 10 and king saw North press on with clubs. That let declarer win and lead the ♠Q to South’s ace,and she cleared the clubs. Now declarer cashed out thediamonds and needed to view the spades to make thecontract.

By this stage, he knew South to be either 3-3-3-4or 2-4-3-4 and the fall of the ♠8 at trick two was eitherfrom A-8 or A-9-8 – in which case South might haveplayed the 9.

Is this a true restricted-choice position? I’m notsure. The fact is that East did take the spade finesseand South was not too proud to win her 9 and cash aclub for down one and a clear top.

The words, “Sauce for the goose is sauce for thegander,” were left unspoken but echoed in expert #1’sears as he left the table, if not wiser, at least better in-formed.

Goodwill message from 1957Playing bridge at tournaments is just enjoyable but knowing the people next to you and playing

in an atmosphere of friendship and good sportsmanship makes it much more enjoyable. To promotethis friendlier atmosphere is one of the chief functions of the Goodwill Committee.

We hope to interest more people in tournament bridge by making the social atmosphere of tourna-ment playing more attractive. To achieve this result, we will need the support of every member of theACBL.

Our committee consists of two members from each of the present 23 districts. These members at-tempt to attend most of the tournaments in their district and are identified by a badge. They will be glad tomeet any of the participants and will be equally anxious to hear any suggestions, complaints or just afriendly greeting.

John E. Simon, ChairmanGoodwill Committee

Osofsky's challenge:extend goodwill togames everywhereGoodwill Committee chairman Aileen Osofsky

is issuing a challenge to members of the GoodwillCommittee: extend goodwill to club games plus re-gional and sectional tournaments.

“One of the ideas of goodwill is to make the newplayer welcome,” she says, “and what better than mak-ing people welcome at every club?”

Goodwill committees could be formed at the dis-trict, unit and club levels, she suggests.

District 9 (Florida) started its own district good-will committee about six years ago, says former Dis-trict Director Jayne Thomas. Each unit president ap-points two members each year. The committee nownumbers about 50 members.

There’s a similar committee in District 16 and thelate Ruth McConnell once started a similar committeein District 8.

The national Goodwill Committee was formed in1955 when ACBL President Jeff Glick — “as part ofour intensive, all-out membership drive” — appointeda Goodwill and Membership Committee headed byJohn Simon of St. Louis.

The original committee included one member fromeach of the nine districts east of the Rocky Mountains“and I know their efforts will be supported by everyunit, franchised club and member in the AmericanContract Bridge League,” Glick wrote in The BridgeBulletin.

Committee members were Ethel Keohane,Wellesley Hills MA, District 1; William Joseph, Pater-son NJ, 2; Olive Peterson, St. Davids PA, 3; WilliamHolderness, Greensboro NC, 4; J. Roy Boggan, Day-ton OH, 5; Grace Grant, Hammond IN, 6; John Simon,St. Louis, 7; Terry Teague, Birmingham AL, 8, and NateSilverstein, Memphis, 9.

The committee was made permanent in 1957 andLouise Durham of Durant MS was named co-chair-man. New committee members were Mary Jane Farell,Barry Crane, Sam Gold, Agnes Gordon, MargaretWagar and Oswald Jacoby.

Simon, who remained as chairman, commented:“Playing bridge at tournaments is very enjoyable,

but knowing the people next to you and playing in anatmosphere of friendship and good sportsmanshipmakes it much more enjoyable.”

“To promote this friendlier atmosphere is one ofthe chief functions of the Goodwill Committee.”

“We hope to interest more people in tournamentbridge by making the social atmosphere of tournamentplaying more attractive. Our committee . . . will beglad to meet any of the participants and will be espe-cially anxious to hear any suggestions, complaints orjust a friendly greeting!”

Forty-six years later, the Goodwill Committee isstill hearing suggestions, complaints and friendly greet-ings. “Goodwill Committee members are chosen be-cause they exemplify the best in bridge,” says Osofsky.“I’m very proud to be a part of this committee.”

Osofsky recalls that when she was named Good-will chairman in 1985, “I didn’t even know what theGoodwill Committee was. So I talked to bridge teach-ers, players and club managers about what the Good-will Committee should do and every group thought Ishould concentrate on the other people.”

Under Osofsky’s leadership, the Goodwill Com-mittee has expanded its activities — taking on the pro-motion of Active Ethics, awareness of the hearing im-paired, naming of a Goodwill Member of the Year andsupport of Junior, Youth and charity programs. Thecommittee also introduced bid boxes and initiated thepractice of calling for “Director, please” and “Caddy, please.”

The committee now numbers about 2200 members.District directors may appoint two new members eachyear. The appointments are lifetime and members re-ceive a Goodwill Committee lapel pin.

Martha McGhee, co-chair of the 1998 OrlandoNABC, was IN chairman at the 1992 NABC. This ar-ticle appeared in the Daily Bulletin at that tourna-ment.

Call the who ...? The Director! It’s okay to callthe director. If fact, if you don’t, you may lose yourright to call him later if you are damaged.

The director is the one who sold you an entry, the one who passed out the board, the one who passedout the hand records and said, “Duplicate, please.”The director is the one who organized the playersand the boards so that everything runs smoothly atthe right time, the right speed and the right direc-tion.

The director is the one you need help from ifand when an irregularity happens at your table. Thedirector gives rulings pertaining to the “Laws of Du-plicate Contract Bridge.”

In order for the conditions of the game to be fair, everyone has to follow the same rules. The directoris familiar with these rules and is responsible forseeing that they are correctly applied.

The director is also the one who calls the roundswhen it is time for you to meet your new opponents. The director puts the results of each board into thecomputer and posts the computer print-out of resultsafter each session.

When you need a director, raise your hand andcall out “Director, please” -- loudly enough for himto hear but not so loudly that it disturbs the otherplayers. When the Director arrives at your table, hewill listen to what happened and explain to the play-ers the ruling that pertains to the irregularity.

Some rulings have several options so if you don’tunderstand them fully, don’t hesitate to ask for themto be repeated.

Since the conditions at each table must be du-plicated as much as possible, all the players mustadhere to the same set of rules. The Director’s mainobjective is to make the game as fair as possible forall the players involved, while ensuring that every-one has an enjoyable time.

Irregularities that may happen at your table forwhich you must call the director: a lead out of turn,an insufficient bid, a revoke, a card missing from ahand, a bid or pass out of turn, failure to Alert anartificial bid, changes of call, disagreements of trickswon, claims with trumps outstanding or disputedclaims, bidding errors, etc.

The Director is your friend. Do not hesitate tocall him or her. In fact, if you don’t call the Direc-tor, you may have lost the right to call him later whenyou discover you have been damaged.

Calling the Director
