Introduction

Vocabulary in Context

• Humble is an adjective that means modest, low in rank, or courteously respectful.

→ The family lived in a humble cottage by the woods.

Vocabulary in Context

• Husk is a noun that means the dry covering of certain fruits and seeds, especially corn.

→ Tamales are wrapped in husks, the stiff coverings from ears of corn.

Vocabulary in Context

• Stagger is a verb that means to walk or move unsteadily. The past tense is staggered.

→The toddler staggered as he took his first steps, so his mother used her hands to steady him.

Vocabulary in Context

• Write a short paragraph using the 3 vocabulary words we just learned. You may write about any topic that you wish.

• When you finish, exchange paragraphs with your partner. Your partner should read, underline the vocabulary words and check that the words are used correctly.

Warm-up

• Yesterday we began talking about the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and we watched a brief video trailer.

• Think back to the video. How to you think Douglass might have reacted emotionally to slavery. Be ready to share your response.
