John 1: 29–42 [p. 48] The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Bring and share patronal festival lunch Please come along to the lunch at St Paul’s Hall on Sunday 26 January, 12.45 for 1 pm – meet new friends and enjoy delicious food and a glass of wine. It’s not too late! Do sign up after the service.

Each year the talented children and young people from St Paul’s are joined by pupils from Western and Westgate Lower schools, and they put on a fantastic show. After the success of Bugsy Malone last year, we’re again staging a musical in one day flat! We’re delighted to have Bronwen Dixie leading the workshop – she teaches at Florian School of Dance/ Chichester Stage School and is hugely experienced and enthusiastic. Children (Year 1 upwards): do get your parents to sign you up for Sat 1 February, 9 am–4.30 pm at Western (contact Mary Copping, 07921 886016, youth@stmatthewstpaul.org); cost £10. Singing and drama will be interspersed with activities and games. Everyone’s welcome to come and watch the performance at 5 pm. There will be plenty of music, drama and singing; a great time is had by all. And it’s free – no tickets needed.

Happy New Year to you all and welcome to 2020, facing a brand new decade, with resolutions aplenty:

be kinder, be tidier and be more organised. If I can keep it up till Feb my friends will be surprised.

So here’s a date for your diary, July the 3rd to 5th.

They’re the dates for PARISH CAMPING, you wouldn’t want to miss! We’re testing out a new venue, south-east down Botley way.

It is called FAIRTHORNE MANOR and it’s a YMCA.

We’ve heard great things about it from friends who’ve been before, and its only 15 miles on Google maps to there from my front door.

There are lots of things to do like walking, rest or play. It would be great if you could make it for a night, or two, or day.

The cost is £29.50 for a family of four,*

if you have an extra child or adult it will be a little bit more. There are additional activities which sound a lot of fun,

but above all it’s a just a chance to be together in the sun (hopefully).

So please let me know if you would like to join the gang; the only problem is that I need to hear BEFORE THE END OF JAN!

Coming up

Annual Christian unity service The unity service will take place at the cathedral today at 6.30 pm (last year’s service was very full, so do arrive in good time). For 2020 the materials for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity have been prepared by the Christian churches in Malta and Gozo. They reflect on the account of St Paul’s shipwreck in the Acts of the Apostles, calling for hospitality and a greater generosity to those in need.

Nightshelter Open Day You are invited to join the Nightshelter for their Open Day on Sat 25 January, 11 am–3 pm. This is a rare opportunity to see inside the Nightshelter and understand more about the positive work being done to help people experiencing homelessness in the area. You will be able to tour the facilities as well as meet staff, residents and volunteers. There will be activities for children and light refreshments for all.

Space in the City The New Year series of talks, The problem of sin: our fault or our circumstances? will be given by Canon Angela Tilby at the United Church on Wednesdays 29 January and 5 and 12 February, 12.30–1 pm (no entrance charge). She will address the idea of sin in the Bible and the Christian spiritual tradition, asking what sense we can make of spiritual warfare.

Hot Mikado Please support Jonathan and Oli Eadie, who will be performing at the Theatre Royal on 20–22 February in Encore Youth Theatre’s production of Hot Mikado, a Gilbert and Sullivan favourite re-imagined as a sensational swinging show set in the 1930s golden age of jazz! Shared lunch set-up Please would all those who have kindly volunteered to help set up for the shared lunch meet in St Paul’s Hall on Sat 25 January at 3.15 pm.

Traffic on St Paul’s Hill Just a word of warning to those who drive to or past the St Paul’s site, that there will be restricted traffic flow from Mon 27 January for up to two weeks due to SSE works at St Paul’s House.

Recycling plastic bottle tops Please put type 2 or type 4 plastic tops in the box at St Matthew’s or take them to the collection point at 10 North View, on the footpath from Oram’s Arbour to Cheriton Road.

Lift needed once a month A resident of Tegfield House would really love to come to church. We’re looking for a volunteer to facilitate this once a month. It would involve collecting and returning her, and staying with her throughout the service and coffee afterwards to make sure she’s safe. Building for Life news

Our builders have had another busy week

With the blockwork for the kitchen, office, utility room, lift and toilets completed, the carpenters have been installing joists that will support the gallery floor and timber uprights in the curved wall; the new rooms are really taking shape

The next stage will be to put in the timber elements of the internal walls and to start the first-fix mechanical and electrical work

SSE have agreed the new path for the relocated electrical supply, so preparations continue for digging the trench

Most exciting this week was to see that a ‘breakthrough’ has been made to the new Resurrection Chapel; we are so very grateful to the Ladies of the Grail for the grant they have pledged to fund this

Health and Safety at Western Children and young people playing outside There’s lots of wonderful space! Parents/ carers, please remember that your children are your responsibility at all times, and especially after our 9.30 service.

Children are not allowed in the classrooms at any time except when their groups are meeting.

Huge thanks to everyone who is helping enable Western to be such a good place for our Sunday worship.
