WelcomeAIC is an independent Year 11-13 senior high school with an international reputation for gaining outstanding academic results in the IB Diploma examinations, as well as for its graduates gaining acceptance at leading universities worldwide.
to Auckland International College (AIC)
AIC has an ambitious vision of
bringing together young adults
from New Zealand and overseas
and of providing them with pathways
to the best universities globally. The
curriculum meets the challenges of the
contemporary world and equips the AIC
graduate magnificently with the knowledge
and skills for university and for 21st century
leadership on a global level. AIC believes
that it is important not only to ensure that
students graduate with the best possible
grades, but also that they develop and
refine the important character-qualities
of independence and contribution, as
epitomised in the AIC credo: “If I am not
for myself, who is for me? If I care only for
myself, who am I?”
The AIC classroom is set apart from
other schools by its academic focus and
rich learning environment created by an
international student body. The selective
admissions policy ensures that AIC students
are highly motivated. The international
classroom enables students from different
countries to contribute their perspectives to
classroom learning. AIC offers its students
academic challenge in a stimulating
international context. This is further
enhanced by teachers with IB experience
who have been recruited internationally to
offer a world class education.
As an international school AIC has the
added advantage of enabling students to
celebrate their cultural diversity as well
as discovering the universal values which
bind humanity. This, in turn, is enhanced by
the family atmosphere in the school. With
fewer than 400 students, AIC students get
to know each other and develop lifelong
friendships spanning the globe. AIC
alumni share friendship and career
networks globally.
The academic programmes at AIC
are challenging. Enquiries are welcome
from those who feel that AIC is an
environment appropriate to their high
aspirations.
AIC offers the IB Diploma qualification as we know this equips
our young men and women with the skills and attributes with
which to engage in the academic challenges of university
life and beyond. It challenges students at all levels, allowing
them to push the boundaries of their academic and personal
development with the goal that they secure a place
at prestigious university somewhere across the globe.
We look for students who are diligent, resourceful and
resilient as these are key traits for a student to successfully
study the IB at AIC. AS a result of these criteria I am
constantly impressed, even after 30 years in the
profession, by what our students are capable of
achieving. They go further, apply themselves
more fully and engage with the tasks more
completely than I have experienced before
and it is a privilege to be able to work with
them in this vibrant atmosphere. I truly
hope and believe that many will make a
difference on a local or global scale.
Principal, Mike Parry
The primary focus of AIC is academic excellence. Students expect and receive an education which prepares them for study at the world’s leading universities.
Academic
The core of this educational
experience is classroom activity,
which is designed to help students
become independent, contributing,
knowledgeable, reflective and critical
thinkers, who will succeed at university level.
Students at AIC are extremely self-
motivated, displaying an impressive
determination to perform well and master
every aspect of their studies. They are eager
for the knowledge and understanding which
will enable them to achieve outstanding
results, and they are prepared to work
extremely hard in order to succeed.
AIC students are encouraged to excel
academically at national and international
levels, and have an impressive track record
of achievement in academic competitions,
including representing New Zealand
on several occasions at International
Mathematics Olympiads.
It is not uncommon for students who
are high performers at other schools to
join AIC and to struggle initially with the
academic demands placed upon them.
However, with the support of teachers and
students, together with the stimulating
study environment, such students are able to
adjust to the new environment and integrate
successfully.
At AIC, the talented teaching staff,
outstanding facilities and resources,

caring support network, and, above all,
the drive, ambition and determination of
students, have created an educational
environment in which all students are able
to develop their potential and reach their
educational goals.
The IB Diploma Programme was selected by AIC as the best high school leaving qualification which enables students to gain entry into universities throughout the world.
CollegeCurriculum
It is a demanding course designed for
able students aged 16-19 years. While
highly academic, the programme aims to
educate the whole person, helping students
to become critical thinkers and independent
and caring young men and women.
Student performance is graded
according to criteria which are moderated
internationally.
The broad concept of the IB curriculum
ensures that students develop a well-
rounded understanding, with each student
selecting one subject from each of the groups
shown in the circle diagram below. Three key
curriculum components, apart from the more
traditional subject/discipline areas, make up
the ‘core’ of the programme circle.
These are:
• Extended Essay – assists students in
becoming independent learners who
will succeed at university
• Theory of Knowledge – develops
critical and reflective thinking.
• Creativity Activity and Service (CAS)
– Through the CAS programme, all
students must give their time to provide
service to others in the community.
The CAS programme ensures that IB
graduates are healthy and that they
recognise the importance of service
to others.

The Preparation Year Programme for the IB Diploma – Year 11The Preparation Year Programme has been
developed by AIC to equip students with
the skills and knowledge required to meet
the demands of the Diploma Programme.
The range of disciplines studied allows
each student to make an informed and
appropriate choice of subjects for the
IB Diploma.
AIC English for Senior Secondary StudiesThis half year course develops and improves
English language skills required for the
AIC Year 11 course, the Preparation Year
Programme for the IB Diploma. In addition
to English, students develop their skills
in Maths, Science, Social Studies and Art.
Physical and mental wellbeing are ensured
through the Health and Physical Education
components of the programme.
Study is integrated in English, Social
Studies, and Health, whereby teaching and
learning are connected thematically and
linguistically.
The course is designed to elevate
the students’ English skills from IELTS
equivalence band score of 3.5 to 4.5 within a
half-yearly timeframe. The course is offered
once a year, from January to June.
AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
AIC students have remarkable success in gaining admission to leading universities. Every year since the first graduating class in 2006, AIC students have been offered places in the top 50 universities worldwide*.
AIC is leading the way in this
respect within New Zealand by
assisting its students through SAT
preparation programmes, and by providing
university seminars and full-time university
counsellors.
*Based on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The significant advantage that AIC
students enjoy is attested to by the fact
that graduates study not only in New
Zealand universities, but also in prestigious
institutions of higher learning overseas.
Your pathwayto the worldThe best school to get into the world’s best universities.
AIC prioritises university counselling support by employing university counsellors at the College.
These specialist counsellors offer
comprehensive support and guidance
to AIC students’ applications to
universities. The counsellors prepare
students for SAT tests, explain what
university admissions officers are looking
for, provide individual university interview
coaching, and, because of their specialist
expertise, they can explain the best ways to
apply to the various universities.
From Year 11, AIC students start the
university application coaching and
preparation process. The counsellors
maintain close relationships with teachers
to ensure that letters of recommendation
to universities are of the highest quality.
AIC is in communication with admissions
officers throughout the world to ensure that
students’ accomplishments are accurately
portrayed in their applications. Having full-
time counsellors on staff at AIC guarantees
that students at AIC are given the best
possible opportunity to enter a leading
university.

AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
Highly qualified teaching and support staff bring valuable international experience and expertise to the school.
Their overseas teaching experience
enables them to empathise with
students of diverse cultures and
enhances intercultural understanding in
the college. Many AIC teachers are IBO
examiners and all foreign language teachers
are native speakers.
These dedicated teachers engage
students with a range of approaches to
learning in order to ensure that all students
are catered for, and that their communicative
skills are developed throughout their course.
Class teachers, year level deans and
university counsellors provide a supportive
network for students. This is further
augmented by a mentor system,
whereby each teacher supervises a small
number of students. The mentors build solid
relationships with their ‘mentees’ and provide
the first point of contact, not only relating to
academic progress but also for other issues
that teenagers face on a day-to-day basis.
Because AIC is a small school, teachers and
students benefit from the family atmosphere
that has developed over several years. No
student can be overlooked or lost in the
system. Whether it is goal-setting, discussion
of university choices or just a friendly chat
for a home-sick student, AIC students are
well supported by highly qualified and
caring teachers.
Teaching Staff
15
AIC not only expects students to gain world class academic grades, but also wants to educate students to be future leaders and graduates who are well rounded and balanced.
The Creativity, Activity and Service
(CAS) programme ensures that AIC
graduates exhibit these qualities.
CAS is intended to provide experiences for
students to develop self-confidence, empathy
and a willingness to help others.
The AIC programme in this regard has
students participate in creative arts, sports,
and community service activities, thereby
encouraging them to demonstrate
qualities of curiosity, honesty, responsibility
and objective self-analysis.
The three elements of Creativity, Activity
and Service enable students to recognise
that there are many opportunities to
learn about life, self and others, and
to inspire confidence, determination
and commitment. The Service element
Creativity, Activity & Service
AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
is particularly significant in terms of
development of respect for others and of
responsibility.
The IBO aim of educating the whole
person comes alive in a practical,
demonstrable way through CAS, when
students are involved in the community at
local, national or international level.
HomestayExperience
AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
Families wishing to offer homestay
to students are first visited and
interviewed by LPHS staff to ensure
the home and family members meet their
criteria. After NZ police vetting checks have
been completed a student can move in.
Students have their own room with a
comfortable bed, a desk, chair and desk light
The AIC homestay operation is run by Lake Panorama Student Homestay (LPSH), a professional company which has been providing excellent care of students and families in Auckland for over 20 years.
for studying. They will enjoy three meals a
day and a warm family life with their carefully
selected host family.
Safety and high standards are of
the utmost importance. Of course all
accommodation is fully compliant with the
Education Code of Practice 2016. Families
and students are monitored and interviewed
regularly throughout the year to ensure
everything is running smoothly and all
parties are happy. A contact person is
available 24 hours a day.
Homestay parents have high
expectations of the students to achieve
academic success. They will ensure
students are following study guidelines
and homestay rules.
Students living in an AIC homestay
will be safe and well cared for. At the end
of their schooling at AIC, they will leave
their homestay family with a rich and
ever-lasting memory of their time in
New Zealand.
The versatility, self-reliance and creativity of AIC students is tested in various outdoor educational activities – the annual Year 11 Camp, Beach Day, cross-country running – our academic students have plenty of chances to experience the beauty of New Zealand.
