A Note from our Artistic Director

Spring is finally here (we are ever hopeful!) and renewal is in the air! My first five months at the Everyman have gone by in a whirl; people kindly ask ‘how are you settling in?’ And I laugh! Settling? Settling is for long winter months and in reward for things achieved!

Now is the time for tilling, planting and making things grow, and that takes great effort by one and all. The fantastic team at the Everyman – all in the box office, bar, front of house, cleaning, maintenance, the marketing department, technical crew and management – have been wonderfully supportive and I am excited by what the future may bring.

Behind all this effort is an inspiring ambition called The Everyman; a people place, a Cork place, a place for sharing magical moments with family and friends, where all are made welcome and everyone can enjoy a lifelong love of the theatre. This vision is dear to us, so first up it gives me great pleasure to share with you our new logo which we feel captures this unique Everyman spirit.

So tuck in and enjoy this brochure which highlights some of the great shows and exciting nights out that we are delighted to be presenting in the months ahead. You’ll find I’ve sprinkled some thoughts of my own throughout; I look forward to hearing your personal feedback next time we meet.

The 1981 Hunger Strike, in which ten men gave their lives in the struggle for political status, irreversibly shaped political developments for decades to come.

In this gripping piece of theatre, we are given a deep insight into the lives of each of the ten men as to who they really were. Through music, song, visuals and performance, this one person show takes us on an extraordinary journey, revealing how ten very ordinary men shook the world from their prison cells.

An ultimately uplifting piece of theatre through tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, ‘1981’ is the story behind the legacy of the hunger strike.

3 divorces, 6 children and 200 Botox injections later they’re back. Find out what Nuala, Nuala and Nuala have been up to - how they’ve coped with the celebrity negativity equity, the radical episiotomies and the changes in showbiz culture since they last trod the boards.

The Nualas have stormed the comedy scene with shows in Ireland and the UK, all sold-out and packed to the rafters. Their upcoming tour includes fabulous all-new classics such as ‘I Don’t Know Who I Am’ and ‘Yummy Mummy Recession Blues’.

A magical night of musical enchantment! Featuring such musical gems as Macushla, Because, Roses of Picardy, Somewhere a Voice is Calling and many many more, this delicious musical evening chronicles the extraordinary life story of the legendary Count John McCormack.

Narrated by the much loved radio and TV presenter Kevin Hough (from RTE’s The Lyrics Board), the show stars Waterford tenor Frank Ryan as John McCormack, and renowned Cork soprano Linda Kenny as Lily.

Directed by the celebrated Cathal McCabe (former RTÉ Head of Music), the show also features the multi-award-winning violinist Deirdre Lehane and legendary pianist Michael Casey.

From Letters of a Love-Hungry Farmer by John B. Keane

Des Keogh, one of Ireland’s foremost actors and entertainers, returns with his hugely successful award-winning show The Love-Hungry Farmer by John B. Keane.

It tells the story of John Bosco McLane, a bachelor of ‘indeterminate’ age and according to his own assessment, ‘past his best’ and evidently still a virgin. McLane’s amorous adventures range from the hilarious to the pitiful.

John B. Keane ranks among the great Irish writers. His plays include Sive, The Field and Big Maggie. His ‘Letters’ series of books were a spectacular success, with The Love-Hungry Farmer being of particular acclaim.

When published in 1942, The Tailor and Ansty was banned by the Censorship Board after 3 days of heated debate in The Seanad. The innocent couple was denounced from the altar in their local church, their cottage boycotted by neighbours and three priests came to their cottage in Gougane Barra and made the Tailor burn the book in his own fireplace. What offence could cause this tragedy? The Tailor was a seanchai (storyteller) who entertained people at his fireplace with tales of life in the countryside and its eccentricities.

Enjoy this captivating true story of rural life first produced in the Abbey Theatre in 1967 with the great Eamon Kelly as the Tailor and Brid Lynch as his wife Ansty. Ronan Wilmot and Ena May now play the roles of this innocent and charming couple who lived in their small cottage in West Cork on one acre with one cow.

With Michael Twomey and Frank Duggan For over 30 years Cha and Miah have been synonymous with Cork. And not just within Cork city and county, but around the country also. With their long association with Frank Hall and Hall’s Pictorial Weekly, their political and social satire was a hugely popular fixture on Irish television. The boys have now decided to hang up their caps. But before they do there will be one last hurrah this summer!

WHAT I DO…

People might be surprised to know that the show itself isn’t the main focus of what I do. My number one concern is the safety of everyone involved in all productions. We work a lot from heights, hanging lighting and sound gear that is set above actor’s heads so safety is always my main concern. My second priority is the preservation of the building. It is old and delicate and as its guardian we must make sure it is respected by all visiting companies. From there my focus is on the show where I ensure that all technical requirements are taken care of and make sure the show is ready to open on time!

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE EVERYMAN

I am working at the Everyman for the past 14 years and I can honestly say that I never feel like I am going to work. I am part of a great team and I enjoy what I do so much that it never feels like a work day. I never wake up not looking forward to coming in, even if it might be a 14 hour day on a Sunday or a Bank Holiday!

BEST MOMENT

Making it rain indoors for Singin’ In The Rain was certainly a highlight and I have also been lucky enough to work with Ed Harris, Tom Conti and other Oscar nominated actors and directors.

SCARIEST MOMENT

Luckily there haven’t been too many of these but there are always challenges fitting up a different show each and every week.

FAVOURITE SHOW

No doubt that Tom Crean is an all time favourite. I love how a one man show with such little technical requirements can continually captivate and inspire audiences. To put it in context, some shows visit us with arctic trucks full of sets, use up to 100 different lights, 50 backing tracks and up to 30 radio mics. With Tom Crean you have a one man show with a single wind sound effect and six lights and people are enthralled by it night after night.
