Ye seed of Israel's chosen raceYe ransomed of the fallHail him who saves you by his graceAnd crown him Lord of all

Hail him who saves you by his grace And crown him Lord of all.

Sinners whose love can ne'er forgetThe wormwood and the gallGo spread your trophies at his feet And crown him Lord of all

Go spread your trophies at his feet And crown him Lord of all

Let ev'ry kindred ev'ry tribeOn this terrestrial ballTo him all majesty ascribe And crown him Lord of all

To him all majesty ascribe And crown him Lord of all

O that with yonder sacred throngWe at his feet may fall

Confession of Sin: Philippians 3:7-8 Rev. Matt GiesmanBut whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.

Assurance of Pardon: Romans 5:6 Rev. Matt GiesmanFor while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

Let us love and sing and wonderLet us praise the Savior’s nameHe has hushed the law’s loud thunderHe has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame

He has washed us with his bloodHe has washed us with his bloodHe has washed us with his bloodHe has brought us nigh to God

Let us love the Lord who bought usPitied us when enemiesCalled us by his grace and taught usGave us ears and gave us eyes

He has washed us with his bloodHe has washed us with his bloodHe has washed us with his bloodHe presents our souls to God

Let us sing though fierce temptationThreatens hard to bear us downFor the Lord our strong salvationHolds in view the conqueror’s crown

He who washed us with his bloodHe who washed us with his bloodHe who washed us with his bloodSoon will bring us home to God

Let us wonder grace and justiceJoin and point to mercy’s storeWhen through grace in Christ our trust isJustice smiles and asks no more

He who washed us with his bloodHe who washed us with his bloodHe who washed us with his bloodHas secured our way to God

Let us praise and join the chorusOf the saints enthroned on highHere they trusted Him before usNow their praises fill the sky

Thou hast washed us with thy bloodThou hast washed us with thy bloodThou hast washed us with thy bloodThou art worthy Lamb of God

Proclamation of the Word: “The Rich Man and Lazarus”Rev. Matt Giesman

Luke 16:19-31

Sermon Text 19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen

and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side.[a] The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Sermon Notes

1) The Great Disparity in This Life, 19-21

2) The Great Chasm in The Life to Come, 22-26

3) The Great Prophet Who Came Back to Life, 27-31

Reflection questions: 1. What was Asaph jealous of in Psalm 73? (See especially vv.1-3) What had

Asaph forgotten? See vv. 16-17, 23-24.

2. When it says that Lazarus is carried to Abraham’s side (or bosom), is that comforting, confusing, or something else to you? Before you answer, read Hebrews 11:8-10, 13-16 about Abraham’s faith and his future.

3. Why did Jesus say it was so important to listen to Moses and the Prophets? See John 5:46-47; Luke 24:25-27, 44-45. (Also, for more regarding miraculous signs, see 1 Cor. 1:22-25)

*Closing Song: “In Christ Alone”Author: Keith Getty, Stuart Townend Publisher: Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing) Copyright Year: 2001 Song Number: 3350395

In Christ alone my hope is foundHe is my light my strength my songThis Cornerstone this solid GroundFirm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love what depths of peaceWhen fears are stilled when strivings ceaseMy Comforter my All in AllHere in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on fleshFullness of God in helpless babeThis gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones He came to save

Till on that cross as Jesus diedThe wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laidHere in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body layLight of the world by darkness slainThen bursting forth in glorious DayUp from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victorySin's curse has lost its grip on meFor I am His and He is mineBought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life no fear in deathThis is the power of Christ in meFrom life's first cry to final breathJesus commands my destiny

No power of hell no scheme of manCan ever pluck me from His handTill He returns or calls me home
