Grade XII focussed on the theme of ‘Learning as a Lifestyle’ which is the much needed skill of the hour. As we grow up, there is no more a structured way of learning that is set for us by an institution like a school or a college. This makes us unaware of the fact that we are still learning, albeit unconsciously. This slower, unconscious learning actually makes us grow our minds and personalities at a slower rate than we did in school or college. To combat this effect, successful people ensure to make up for the absence of that structured school or college learning system by designing their own structured learning system. A skit, showcasing how learning continuously and adapting to change helps one be more successful in life, was performed by the students of grade XII. This was aided by sharing some contemporary and conventional learning tools that are accessible to the students today. The new teacher-in-charges were introduced in the assembly, who encouraged the students with their words of wisdom. The assembly ended with the introduction of the student council members and with inspiring speeches by the Head Boy, Ajay Saradhi Uppaluri and the Head Girl, Anusha Choudhary. Grade VI and Grade II followed up with their assemblies that dealt with the burning theme of “Being Safe and Vigilant”. The assembly commenced with the introduction of the new coordinators and teachers followed by the news desk. A lively song was sung by the choir group reaffirming their pride in belonging to school. The Moto of the year gone by, ‘At times at all times’ and the present year, ‘Be Vigilant and Safe’ was mentioned encouraging everyone in the audience to take note and abide.

The assembly concluded with the message that “Every day heralds a new beginning and it is our choice to ensure a successful ending”. The words of wisdom by the Principal, Head Mistresses and other teachers instilled in the students new fervour to learn from the year gone by and work towards achieving newer levels of success this year.

In today’s contemporary world, it is extremely important that young children are equipped with the right skills and expertise so that they are able to keep up with the fast-paced globalization and expansion. Numerical and Logical Reasoning skills are two such abilities. One small step in this direction was to organize an Inter-House Competition for the students of Classes V to test their abilities in this genre. Armed with self-confidence and poise, the young scholars of Grade V attempted a questionnaire on the above theme to find out their proficiency. A set of 25 questions were given to them which they had to complete in one hour. Students participated with great enthusiasm and enjoyed attempting the assessment. The students of Class VI proved their prowess in English spelling and vocabulary in the recently concluded Spell- Bee. The competition was open to all students of class VI. The first and second rounds were written rounds. The first round consisted of forty words and the top three students from every section moved on to the second round where twenty words had to be spelt. Four students from each house made it to the finals.

‘Logic is the art of thinking well: the mind like the body, requires to be trained before it can use its powers in the most advantageous way.’ Reasoning, problem solving and decision-making represent different but overlapping aspects of human intelligence. Logical thinking is the process in which one uses reasoning consistently to come to a conclusion. Thus, Numerical and Verbal reasoning tests are essential to identify an individual’s level of ability to reason with the information provided, in order to obtain a correct answer. With the objective of improving and accessing the individual analytical skill of a student, ‘Numerical and Verbal reasoning’, an Inter House competition for grade VII and VIII was conducted on 29th March, 2018. The contest was conducted for all the sections in the form of pen and paper based test in individual classroom. Two different sets having a variety of 25 questions were provided in each section. Students exhibited a lot of enthusiasm to comprehend the questions, work out the solutions and infer the right answer.

“A good newspaper I suppose, is a nation talking to itself”

Humans being a social animal have always been interested in knowing more about their surroundings. And in this journey, Newspapers have played one of the most important role. From the bringing, delivering the latest news to one’s doorstep to giving a deep insight about the worldly affairs, it has played its role conscientiously. Over the ages the format of media has been changing, and particularly during the last decade the onslaught of Internet has superseded even the latest breaking news trends of various news channels. For the new age readers, getting the news headlines through news feed is much more convenient than to sit down with a newspaper and go through the pages. To make this new age app following techie kids understand the lasting impact of a newspaper, Delhi Public School Hyderabad organized a Newspaper making competition for its Senior Secondary wing. Students were provided guidelines and theme based on which each group had to create their edition. From researching news stories, to writing headlines and sourcing pictures students got a taste to know just how much work it takes to put together a newspaper. By the morning of 4th of April, Wednesday, the stories have been edited, the editorial framed, the headlines written, the photographs sourced and the cartoons drawn. Students got busy with their respective teams to write down the headlines, place the advertisements strategically, to insert the Sudoku puzzles etc. and not to forget the Satirical Cartoon clip. The end result was spectacular. The judges had a difficult time to judge the best among these fantastic specimens. Mr. Sanjay Kumar from THE HANS INDIA, Hyderabad based English-language daily newspaper, was the subject expert heading the judging panel. At the end of the contest, students were seen exchanging their ideas, opinions thus making the whole exercise truly successful.

Other Activities Welcome to the World Where Nurture and Nature Go Hand in Hand.

Around here, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

- Walt Disney

The DPS Pre Primary Wing provides an array of multisensory environments that encourages the children to explore and foster their natural curiosity.

Maths lab: We design Maths related activities that incorporate concepts art and craft games. The young learners practice important maths skills in fun and creative ways.

English lab: With a focus on strengthening the students’ reading and writing skills, the English lab focuses on building strong foundation in sight words and phonemic awareness among our students.

Classroom activity centres: We focus to maximize hands-on, independent learning time. Having students work in different centres gives them independent practice time and it allows the teachers to give the children more individualized attention. Reading Programme: A structured reading programme is also put in place to increase reading proficiency and weekly circle time helps them to understand the importance of being a good listener, taking turns, group learning attending following directions and enhance their social skills. Mini library : An easy-to-reach shelf around the corner , makes it a cozy, inviting place for young readers to pick a book of their choice and read.

As children have an innate curiosity and desire to learn about the world around them, our school curriculum is structured to channelize their energy towards learning in a fun and creative way while building their cognitive skills and language abilities. We, at DPS, Hyderabad aim at scaling newer heights and touching newer horizons. We ensure that the little learner within us is always alert and agile. Competition with others is not what we aim at, we encourage the child to be his or her own competitor. Our curriculum targets the holistic development of the children. We hope the year ahead will be full of fun, learning and enriching experiences.

Spectrum Week

“The Greatest Masterpieces Were Once Only Pigments On a Palette”.

The Spectrum week celebration was a wonderful learning activity which helped children to associate objects based on colors, thereby re-enforcing the cognitive skills. Children by nature like to learn and experiment with the colors. Using this innate nature as a guide to blend fun with learning, class Prep celebrated colour week from 2nd April 2018 to 6th April 2018. The week-long celebration witnessed tiny tots dressed up in different colors. Each day, a new colour was introduced .Students and teachers dressed up in the colour of the day and took part in various creative activities. The week started with The Red Day where children made paper craft water melon slice using sponge dabbing activity. This was followed by The Blue Day, where the children made an aquarium by using thumb printing activity, Yellow Day, where children loved to make honey bees using paper pasting activity and Green Day, where the little ones had fun making a paper frog head gear. The breakfast and snacks boxes of the kids too reflected the colour of the day. The Spectrum week April 2018 was a success as the children enjoyed their days to the fullest and learned to connect with the delightful, magical world of colours.
