We end our Pentecost month with an enthronement Psalm. You’ll hear more about what that is this morning. But in part it is asking the question by what north star do you navigate? Who sits on the throne of your life? Don’t answer too quickly. There is a head answer, a rote faith-based answer to that question. But is it accurate? Is it what you hope, or what you say, but not actually what you do? I know, a tough question for a Sunday morning. But then, what better time? That’s part of what we do when we gather. We remember together that we are baptized. We remember that we belong to a larger family than we see throughout the week. We remember that the freedom we prize so highly isn’t freedom for nothing, but freedom for something. At a cost we so often forget. Memorial Day is a time to remember the cost. For our nation, for the freedoms and the privi- lege we take for granted. It is good to remember to be thankful. But not just thankful with our words or prayers, or gestures or donations. All those are good things, things we ought to be doing. But a real life of gratitude is not just about a holiday observance. It is about the daily act of taking seriously who we are as citizens of a nation, and members of the family of God. It is taking the time to remember who is in charge of our lives. And living fully alive because of that. It is engaging with a troubled world, not with condemnation or judgement, but hope and love. The Psalmist says “worship the Lord in holy splendor” which means not just the clothes we wear but the attitude we bring. Not just what’s on our body, but what’s on our face, what’s in our heart. When Isaiah remembered that God was in charge, when he saw God on the throne, he fell down and admitted that he hadn’t lived a life worthy of the sacrifice that others had made for him. Admitted that he hadn’t lived as though God was on the throne, but that he was. This summer we are going to spend time in the Gospel of Luke. Some familiar stories, some not so familiar. I hope it will be informative, and even entertaining. But most of all, I hope it becomes a way for us to enthrone God again—since we all have a tendency to worship something else from time to time. I hope it becomes a way for us to engage with the text and with one another over the summer and wrestle out just what it means to let God be God of our every day lives. To that end, I’m launching a Read the Book initiative. Over the course of the summer, I chal- lenge us all to read the Gospel of Luke. Beginning to end. Once each month—June, July, August. Three times through this summer. Don’t worry about following along with the Sun- day morning texts (though you are welcome to do so—the texts came to you in the newsletter this week! We start next week with chapter 7!) Just read and study and … and I know this is out on the limb stuff, bring your questions to worship. Who knows, it might catch on and this preaching thing could become a conversation. But Read the Book. Gospel of Luke. Handel GREETINGS AND MINISTRIES PRELUDE Variations on “A Paschal Chorale” Garth Edmundson *CALL TO WORSHIP The well of God is full -- come and drink! His kindness and goodness and mercy are overflowing -- open your hearts to receive them! It is no accident that you are here, that we are together and that God is with us. God desires to be with us, so find joy in the divine presence. Give God all your worship, whether you have much or little. God is worthy of all we bring. And where you find yourself empty, allow God to fill you. Great God, we give you our praise. May it be pleasing in your sight and proclaim your great glory! Amen. *HYMN “We Thy People Praise Thee” Hymn #67

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Majestic God, we open the Scriptures needing to see you as you are instead of the small, manageable, accommodating God we make you out to be. Pierce us with truth and light. Sweep away our self- delusions. In these words give us a vision of the God of the universe whose power and might evoke awe and fear in the hearts of the truly humble. For the sake of Christ we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Psalm 96 The Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God HYMN SING

SERMON The Gods of the Peoples Rev. Dr. Derek Weber *HYMN “God of the Ages” Hymn #698 A MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER Heavenly Father, as our nation pauses today to remember those in the military who have given their lives for freedoms we enjoy, we pray you would have us all look to you for strength, comfort and guidance. Be with all who serve in our Armed Forces. Bless them and their families. Grant your loving protection. Let peace prevail among all the nations, O God. Especially let your mercy rest upon our land, even as we acknowledge with thanksgiving your past goodness on this country. If it is your will, preserve the lives of the men and women in uniform as they defend our citizenry. Most of all, we pray that you would turn the hearts of all – military and civilian – to your holy Word where we find the true peace for our sinful souls that surpasses all understanding. Keep us repentant of sin. Move us to know, take hold and treasure your saving grace. In the name of Jesus, our Savior and Your beloved Son, who alone gives this peace and hope for eternity, we pray. Amen.
