Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Ministry Schedule

God bless the Mothers of the world. On this Mothers’ Day

weekend we com-mend all mothers to

the maternal care and pro-tection of the Blessed Mother, and thank mothers for their service to all humanity in the raising of children. The task of serving as a mother is often not easy, but it is so necessary in this challenging world. Congratulations and blessings to all who serve in the ministry of motherhood.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, This weekend we celebrate First Holy Communion for the children from our parish who have been preparing for this Sacrament this past year. I thank Timothy Stammayer and Luke Greg-ory for preparing these children. I also give a huge “shout out” to the parents of these children who are the primary educators of their children in the way of faith. Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, the parents of these children receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents are called to initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the "first heralds" for their children (Catechism 2225). Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by living a Christian

life in keeping with the Gospel. Sharing faith within the family precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as chil-dren of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community at the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privi-leged place for the catechesis of children and parents (Catechism 2226). “Train the young in the way they should go; even when old, they will not swerve from it.” Proverbs 22:6 A child's First Holy Communion marks the beginning of their sacramental life in the Catholic Church. These children are embarking on their lifelong sacramental journey with Christ and the Church as they now have reached the age of reason, (at least in terms of beginning to understand the importance of this Sacrament). At this age they begin to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to live a sanctified (holy) life with Christ and what role God has for them in the Church. Parents are the primary catechists (teachers) of your children and our religious formation pro-grams are designed to support your efforts. You parents and our parish work on this task together. As we come to this important day in your child’s life let’s take a moment to reflect on:

1. The meaning of this most Holy Sacrament; the Bread and Wine become the Body and Blood of Je-sus Christ: - The Eucharist is the Real Presence of Christ, "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of Our Lord Jesus Christ, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained" (Catechism 1374). - Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life…" (John 6:54) 2. We receive Jesus in order to be united with Him and set apart, holy as He is holy, and to strengthen the eternal life we now share with Him. - Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst" (John 6:35). - "For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him (John 6:56)."

3. These children will have new life in Christ; His presence in us gives us supernatural life - He guides our life in every decision, every difficulty, and every relationship - so we belong to Him always and in everything. - "I ask you to consider that our Lord Jesus Christ is your true head, and that you are one of his members. He belongs to you as the head belongs to its members; all that is his is yours: his spirit, his heart, his body and soul, and all his faculties. You must make use of all these as of your own, to serve, praise, love, and glorify God. You belong to him, as members belong to their head. And so he longs for you to use all that is in you, as if it were his own, for the service and glory of the Father." St. John Eudes "For to me, life is Christ" (Philippians 1:21). Today is these children receive their first Holy Communion, their Sacrament of union with Christ. I pray that next week, they will receive their second Holy Communion and see this as an important part of their week and, more importantly, an essential part of their life.

Save the Date! Scrap Steel Collection Do you have some scrap steel lying around your house or property? Scrap iron, machinery, cars, trucks, indus-trial scrap, aluminum, brass, copper, catalytic converters, insulated wire, lead, batteries, electric motors, radiator, stainless steel, etc. Sacred Heart Youth will take it! The youth are fundraising for different youth trips, including the National Catholic Youth Conference; a biennial con-ference held in Indianapolis, Indiana. There will be a roll off container available Saturday, May 15 & Sun-

day, May 16 in the Sacred Heart Church parking lot to collect any scrap steel donations that you have. If you need us to pick something up, we can do that between the hours of 9:00 AM – Noon on Saturday, May 15 but due to the Covid pandemic, we will not be going into your home. Please have the scrap metal either in your garage or outside of your home. The money that we will receive from Gralnek-Dunitz Co. in exchange for the scrap metal will go a long way toward helping our group and also our planet! Saving even the smallest piece of metal can really help! If you have any questions, or if you will need us to pick up your donation, please contact Luke at [email protected] or call 641-792-2050. *Gralnek-Dunitz Co. does not accept dishwashers.

all of our youth in your prayers, espe-cially those who will be moving on from high school and into higher education or into the workforce. May they always be the Face of Christ wherever they go!
