WELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP

Thank you for joining us online today. May the Word of God that you hear strengthen your faith and increase your desire to serve the Lord!

The world may be in a state of panic, but the Church of Jesus is a place of

refuge where we know God’s peace. We gather today to hear God’s Word and

to rejoice in his message of comfort and forgiveness, of life and salvation. We

are honored that you are joining us for our online worship.

• This service folder will enable you to follow along and participate in the service wherever you are. You are also welcome to use your personal hymnal and Bible at home.

• You may wish to sing along with the hymns or simply reflect upon the text—this is the beauty of our hymns with a strong, Christ-centered message!

• Page numbers for readings refer to their location in the pew Bibles at church, and they may not correspond to the version of the Bible you are using at home.

If there is any other way in which we can assist you, please let us know.

PENTECOST 10 — AUGUST 8-10, 2020

Come, Holy Spirit! Show us the treasure of your grace

Of all the things you call your own, what do you value the most?

That question prompts us to pause and reflect. We possess lots of things. Some of those things are very important and very precious. But what do you consider most precious of all?

It doesn't take much thought to realize that material possessions aren't the most important. They're here today and gone tomorrow. Even our own bodies, our lives and our relationships with those we love are fleeting and temporary. There has to be something more!

The most important thing we have is our soul—our very self, our being. Our soul is eternal; we will last forever. Jesus asked, “What does anyone profit if they gain the whole world yet lose their own soul?” So the things that matter most are things that help our soul. Our relationship with God through faith in Jesus, the eternal inheritance waiting for us in heaven—these are far more important than any of this life's trinkets and baubles. When you have Jesus as your Savior you have everything you need for eternity. When you know your Savior's kindness and love, you lack nothing.

Please stand.

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

Cong: And also with you.

M: Praise be to you, O LORD;

C: Teach me your decrees.

M: Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees;

C: Then I will keep them to the end.

M: Direct me in the path of your commands,

C: For there I find delight.

M: Turn my eyes away from worthless things;

C: Preserve my life according to your Word.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Absolution is the announcement of

forgiveness, an announcement that

is as valid and certain as if Christ

himself spoke it. Jesus said, “Peace be

with you. If you forgive anyone his

sins, they are forgiven.”

—Psalm 119

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie

M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care:

M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise.

RESPONSIVE HYMN God’s Word Is Our Great Heritage Christian Worship 293

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

Page 11: WELCOME []...2020/08/09  · John Leavitt PERSONAL PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION As you prepare to receive the Sacrament today, you may use the Personal Preparation for Holy Communion

9

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Be seated.

OFFERING

Many of our worshipers have been giving online or have been mailing their church offerings or dropping them off at the church office. If you would like to give your offering in person today, you may come up now and place it in the offering plate at the front of church. The offering plate is in the front of the church, instead of near the church entrance because our offerings are part of our worship and are an important part of the service. We also want our offerings to be more secure at the front of the church. You may continue giving online, or you may drop off your offering at the church office during regular hours or mail your offering to church at: 715 W Southern Avenue, Tempe AZ 85282. Thank you for your generous offerings to support the ministry of the gospel at Emmanuel!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

M: The Lord be with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.

In the Lord's Prayer Jesus teaches his disciples how to

pray: boldly, confidently, and for

things that God loves to give us.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body , which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The word “Sanctus” means “holy.” In the presence of the Triune God, angels sing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty” (Isaiah 6:4). The Church sings the same song in preparation for Holy Communion, firmly confessing the Lord’s presence in the Sacrament.

Faces of faith on the Apache reservations in Arizona

I love the inspiring Faces of Faith articles that are done by WELS Mission Promotions. The trouble these days is that faces are all I get to see. I don't know how it is for all of you in the rest of the world, but the COVID-19 virus has locked our Apache reservations up tightly.

Some of our reservation communities have high rates of infection, and in other communities, there is fear that the virus will spread quickly because the average home is crowded and multi-generational. There have been no church services or Bible Classes since March. Gatherings of more than 10 and now 5 are prohibited. Stay-at-home orders have taken away the ability to go fishing or walk along the road for exercise. Checkpoints are set up at community entrance points to keep visitors out

Page 21: WELCOME []...2020/08/09  · John Leavitt PERSONAL PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION As you prepare to receive the Sacrament today, you may use the Personal Preparation for Holy Communion

19

and restrict residents from leaving except on certain days of the week. So we're left with faces. Faces on Zoom meetings or video calls from home, and halves of faces behind a mask from six feet away at the grocery store.

But those faces still show us faith. Or at least the evidence of it. Several weeks ago, there was a wildfire in one of our reservation communities. Several families lost everything. Houses, vehicles, personal possessions, and irreplaceable family mementos went up in smoke on one terrible afternoon. And guess what happened? Before the smoke even cleared, our church members were offering to help. Over the next days, truckloads of clothes, personal hygiene supplies, blankets, and food came from Native Christians expressing their faith through their actions. Others brought money to help the families. Their generosity was astounding! They gave freely and willingly from what they had without holding back. They couldn't hug, couldn't gather at the same time, and couldn't even get closer than six feet. Their faces were masked, but their faith was visible.

It could be a while on our Apache reservations before we can see more than faces on a video screen. But the faith of our Native Christian people remains very visible in new ways.

As Native Christians we have donated more than 1,900 masks to local hospitals, and our members are working hard sewing hundreds more. While our pastors and teachers work hard to share Jesus without church services or classrooms full of students, our members are also being bold in sharing God's Word and showing Christian concern with words and actions. May God bless you too as you find new and creative ways to share the ancient and unchanging story of Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith!

PERSONAL PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION

The following questions for self-examination (adapted from various sources) may be helpful as you prepare to receive the Sacrament.

As we prepare to partake of the Holy Supper of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is appropriate that we diligently examine ourselves, as St Paul exhorts us. For this Sacrament has been instituted for the special comfort and strengthening of those who humbly confess their sins and hunger and thirst for righteousness.

But if we thus examine ourselves, we find nothing in ourselves but sin and death, from which we can in no way set ourselves free. Therefore our Lord Jesus Christ has had mercy upon us and has taken upon himself our nature, so that he might fulfill the whole will and law of God and for us and for our deliverance suffer death and all that we by our sins have deserved. In order that we should more confidently believe this and be strengthened in faith and cheerful obedience to his holy will, he has instituted the holy Sacrament of his Supper, in which he feeds us with his body and gives us to drink of his blood.

Therefore, whoever eats this bread and drinks this cup firmly believing the words of Christ, lives in Christ and Christ in him, and has eternal life.

We should also do this in remembrance of him, proclaiming his death—that he was delivered over for our sins and raised to life for our justification. Then with thankful hearts we commit ourselves again to take up our cross and follow him, keep his commandments, and love one another as he has loved us.

As you examine yourself, consider these questions before God, who searches the heart:

Q: Do you sincerely confess that you have sinned against God and deserved his wrath and punishment?

A: Truly you should confess, for Holy Scripture declares, “If we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

Q: Do you heartily repent of all your sins committed in thought, word, and action?

A: Truly you should repent, as did the penitent sinners: King David, who prayed for a contrite heart; Peter, who wept bitterly; the woman caught in adultery; the prodigal son; and others.

Q: Do you sincerely believe that God, by his grace, for Jesus’ sake, forgives you all your sins?

A person should examine himself

before eating of the bread and drinking

from the cup. For anyone who eats and

drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on

himself. But if we judged ourselves, we

would not come under judgment. (1

Corinthians 11:28,29, 31).

Page 23: WELCOME []...2020/08/09  · John Leavitt PERSONAL PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION As you prepare to receive the Sacrament today, you may use the Personal Preparation for Holy Communion

21

A: Truly you should believe, for Holy Scripture declares, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Q: Do you promise that with the help of the Holy Spirit you will from this time forward amend your sinful life?

A: Truly you should so promise, for Holy Scripture declares, “No one who lives in him keeps on sinning,” and Jesus himself declares, “If you love me you will obey what I command.”

Personal prayer:

Lord Jesus, as a penitent sinner filled with joy and gratitude I now come to your table to receive the precious food of your life-giving body and blood. May it strengthen me to remain in you as you remain in me, so that I bear much fruit in devoted service to you and in acts of love and kindness to others. Amen.
