  • Church of the Holy Comforter is an Episcopal Church

    in the Diocese of Chicago that was established in 1902.

    Our Christian community is dedicated to love in the

    name of Christ, and to service to one another and the

    larger world.

    As we gather for worship during the Covid-19 virus

    pandemic, we do so not in our familiar and beloved

    church sanctuary but in our own homes, or in other

    locations. While it is certainly unique, and for many of

    us difficult and even painful, not to be together

    physically, we must always remember that we are still the

    Body of Christ, and remain the Church. As the song

    sung daily by children in our preschool, All Things

    Bright and Beautiful, reminds us, “the church is the

    people.” And so we remain. And always shall.

    Wherever you are this morning, please know that the

    clergy and staff miss you deeply, and you remain in our

    hearts and prayers. May God keep all safe, healthy, and

    comforted in God’s loving hands and heart.

    CHURCH OF THE HOLY COMFORTER

    Welcome!

    The Sixth Sunday of Easter

    Sunday,

    9:00 a.m.

  • THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

    May 17, 2020 9:00 a.m.

    Organ Prelude Johann Sebastian Bach Prelude in C major, BWV 547

    Opening Acclamation

    Celebrant Alleluia. Christ is risen!

    People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

    Opening Hymn 210 Ellacombe

    The day of resurrection!

    Earth, tell it out abroad;

    the Passover of gladness,

    the Passover of God.

    From death to life eternal,

    from earth unto the sky,

    our Christ hath brought us over

    with hymns of victory.

    Our hearts be pure from evil,

    that we may see aright

    the Lord in rays eternal

    of resurrection light;

    and, listening to his accents,

    may hear so calm and plain

    his own “All hail!” and, hearing,

    may raise the victor strain.

    Now let the heavens be joyful,

    let earth her song begin,

    the round world keep high triumph,

    and all that is therein;

    let all things seen and unseen

    their notes together blend,

    for Christ the Lord is risen,

    our joy that hath no end.

    Words: John of Damascus (8th cent.); tr. John Mason Neale (1818–1866), alt. Music: Ellacombe, melody from Gesangbuch...der Herzogl. Wirtembergischen katolischen Hofkapelle, 1784, alt.; adapt. Katholisches

    For the Lord is a great God, *

    and a great King above all gods.

    In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *

    and his hands have molded the dry land.

    Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *

    and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

    For he is our God,

    and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *

    Officiant and People together

    Love never comes to an end.

    There is nothing in death or life, in the realm of spirits or superhuman

    powers, in the world as it is or the world as it shall be,

    in the forces of the universe, in heights or depths:

    nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God

    which is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Love never comes to an end. adapted from Romans 8:37-39

    Officiant The Lord be with you.

    People And also with you.

    Officiant Let us pray.

    Gracious God, you give us much every day; grant us also a thankful spirit.

    Hold in your hands those we love, those who struggle, those who strive.

    Be with us always, and renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.

    Amen.

    THE LESSONS

    Acts 17:22-31

    Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how

    extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and

    looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an

    altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship

    as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and

    everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines

    made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he

    needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all

    things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth,

    and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places

    where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope

  • Page 6

    for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For

    ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own

    poets have said,

    ‘For we too are his offspring.’

    Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like

    gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of

    mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he

    commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on

    which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has

    appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the

    dead.”

    Lector The Word of the Lord.

    People Thanks be to God.

    Psalm 66

    Bless our God, you peoples; *

    make the voice of his praise to be heard;

    Who holds our souls in life, *

    and will not allow our feet to slip.

    I will enter your house with burnt-offerings

    and will pay you my vows, *

    which I promised with my lips

    and spoke with my mouth when I was in trouble.

    Come and listen, all you who fear God, *

    and I will tell you what he has done for me.

    I called out to him with my mouth, *

    and his praise was on my tongue.

    In truth God has heard me; *

    he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

    Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, *

    nor withheld his love from me.

    in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

    The Gospel

    Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

    John 14:15-21

    Jesus said, ”If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask

    the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.

    This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither

    sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and

    he will be in you.

    I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world

    will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.

    On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in

    you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love

    me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them

    and reveal myself to them.”

    A New Creed created by the Holy Comforter 2019 Confirmation Class

    Officiant and People together

    We believe in God, the one and only Creator of heaven

    and earth, of all that is visible and invisible.

    Our all-loving Father,

    He leads and protects and teaches us.

    We believe in Jesus, the only Son of God.

    A healer and wonder worker,

    he was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

    and gave up his life in order to bring us new life.

    Crucified for our sake, he was raised by God from the grave

    and ascended to heaven to reign with his loving Father.

    We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life,

    the invisible presence of God with and within us

    who comes to us and our world in times of need.

    We believe in the Church, which is both a place and a people:

    a place to pray and seek forgiveness,

    and to deepen our relationship with God;

    a people called to love and help others, and to

    welcome all in the name of God.

    We believe the Church is filled with angels and saints,

    known and unknown.

    We believe in the power of love. Amen.

    The Prayers

    Officiant The Lord be with you.

    People And also with you.

    Officiant Let us pray.

    Officiant and People

    Father, from your tranquil world above,

    may your kingdom come,

    to reveal your nourishing light.

    Let your clear will be done

    on earth and in heaven.

    What is needed for life today,

    the substance of holy bread,

    provide to us soon.

    Forgive countless debts of our errors,

    no different than we pardon our debtors.

    Oh, keep temptation of the devil far away,

    and likewise raise us up

    to the light at your right hand.

    For yours is the kingdom and power and glory

    now and through the ages. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer from the Angle-Saxon Book of Cerne, 9th century

    Officiant Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;

    People Govern and uphold them, now and always.

    Officiant Day by day we bless you;

    People We praise your Name for ever.

    Officiant Lord, keep us from all sin today;

    People Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

    Officiant Lord, show us your love and mercy;

    People For we put our trust in you.

    Officiant In you, Lord, is our hope;

    People And we shall never hope in vain.

    Celebrant

    O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass

    our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving

    you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed

    all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with

    you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Prayers of the People

    Listen, O Lord, to the thoughts and cares of our hearts. Blessed are you eternal God, to be praised and glorified forever.

    Heavenly Father, hear us as we pray for the unity of the Church.

    May we all be one that the world may believe.

    Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you,

    that the life of Christ may be revealed in us.

    We pray for all affected by the Covid-19 virus, holding in our hearts all medical

    professionals, those who serve in hospitals and medical centers, urgent care

    facilities, infirmaries and health centers; for all caregivers in assisted living places

    and nursing homes; for all who make possible your healing presence.

    Fill them with your compassion and comfort.

    Remembering especially those on our parish prayer list…we ask that you would

    have compassion on those who suffer from sickness, grief or trouble,

    In your presence may they find strength.

    We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory.

    Lord, into your hands we commend them.

    Look with your kindness on our homes and families.

    Grant that your love may grow in our hearts.

    Make us alive to the needs of our community.

    Help us to share one another’s joys and burdens.

    Remembering especially Grace Mangel and Savannah Pope, who celebrate

    birthdays today, and those celebrating a wedding anniversary, George and

    Lin Drake and Sean and Wendy Flynn, we give thanks for all of the

    blessings in our lives.

    Give us the grace to be aware, to be joyful, and to pay attention to your

    wondrous works.

    In all our needs; in all our hurts; in all our anxiety;

    Be with us, loving God.

    For healing; for peace; for a deep trust in your Word and promise;

    Be with us, loving God.

    To calm our doubts; to soothe our fears; to carry our sorrows;

    Be with us, loving God.

    Officiant and People

    O Lord, help us who hope in you,

    comfort with your Word

    those whom you have redeemed with your most precious blood,

    and grant us, with you, perpetual joy and happiness,

    where sighing is at an end, and sorrow cannot come;

    and grant us, with you, perpetual joy and happiness,

    where sighing is at an end, and sorrow cannot come;

    through your mercy, O our God,

    you are blessed, and live and govern all things,

    now and forever. Amen. The Mozarabic Collect for the Sixth Sunday of Easter, 7th century

We will create a taped liturgy that day incorporating youth readers, intercessors, dancers, and musicians, and will be privileged to hear homi-lies from three of our graduating High School seniors: Eli Civetta, Ted Cornejo, and George Wise. Even as we wish we could experience Youth Sunday and the Senior preachers live and in person, we nevertheless look forward with joy and anticipation to this special day. Please make sure to join us at 9:00 on May 24 to experience and cele-brate the gifts and ministries of our young people! Calling All Youth Artists As church services continue in the Great Room, we would like to bring some joy and life into our background. We encourage you to cre-ate artwork with your children (the more colorful, the better...markers would prob-ably work best!) that will be posted above the mantle above the fireplace. • Spring Outreach Opportunities During this time of intense unemployment, national food banks and pantries are seeing up to a 10-fold increase in new food requests. Church of the Holy Comforter would like to do our small part to assist them. Our two partners in the fight against Chicagoland hunger are A Just Harvest and Care For Friends, organiza-tions that feed the hungry, provide foundational shelter care, and connect struggling indi-viduals to resources that fight the poverty cycle. Adult and Family Efforts: For the next month, please drop off any items from the follow-ing list for donation to these organizations that are currently doubling down on their ef-forts. If possible, bring the donations in boxes and leave them in the front cloakroom next to the sanctuary (open every day): Tuna in pouches; Canned fruit with pull tops; Trail mix; Bananas; Peanut butter; Bread ; Any type of nut; Canned vegetables - pull top; Canned broth (vegetable, chicken, beef); Can Soup - pull top; Diced tomatoes (small cans); Instant Rice; Other items: To-Go Boxes (Plates) 9 x 9 x 3 – if possible, biodegradable; 55-gallon garbage bags; Ziplock bags (quart and sandwich); heavy-duty reusable plastic forks. Youth Effort: If you are anywhere from the age of 6 to 18: don't worry, you can help, too! Our own parishioner Mattie Crawford has put together this wonderful way to make a dif-ference. Save your change a little at a time, and see your efforts build! Food donations can come in any time from now to June 7th. Change donations should be brought in (in change form!) only on June 5th - June 7th.
