Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, This issue of our bulletin focuses on just some of the ways both staff and laity are among our treasures here at St. John’s. Like the Gospel story, they keep their own profiles low (like the treasure buried in the field) but make such valuable contributions to our parish’s well-being. (See page 5). I would also include all those who, through the quarantine to the present, have helped us keep a faithful schedule of Masses each day, both streamed and now in church. Then there are those who help keep us informed, through our new parish newsletter and full-color bulletin, as well as our presence on Facebook and Instagram. Our Transfiguration Academy staff and parents have kept the educational process going, and have marvelous plans for the new year. (See page 6). There were many parishioners who made sure the priests were well fed, and there are all those parishioners who by their generous support keep our parish financially secure in these challenging times. I will have much more to say about our “All for St. John’s” initiative next week. It will reveal another simple way that together we can make a big impact for our parish at this time of year!

Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings In his book Live and Learn and Pass It On, H. Jackson Brown, Jr. has published some lists of the lessons that people have learned in life. These contain one-liners that capture the wisdom gained by youngsters and oldsters through their everyday adventures. Clearly these sayings give expression to the voice of experience. So why does it take so long to come upon such wisdom? Why can’t it be issued to us when we’re born? It would be so much easier. But that’s not how it happens. The wisdom has to find us. The Kingdom of God, too, seems to find us rather than the other way around. At least that’s what the Gospel this Sunday seems to suggest when it compares the reign of God to a treasure found buried in a field. Treasures tend to find us, sometimes even when we’re actually searching for them, as in the Gospel’s tale of the fine pearl. That’s why Solomon needed to lean on God for some wisdom, because he couldn’t come to it on his own. It’s also why parents can’t make their children believers, because faith finds us. In fact, some folks would suggest that most of the really valuable things we wait for are all part and parcel of God’s reign, things like love or wisdom or the joy that comes with the perfect job or the child you’ve been waiting for. In one way or another, God’s Kingdom finds us.

—Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”

ROMANS 8:28

Do you really trust God? Do you really believe that God will provide all that you need? Faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, in good times and in bad, means that God’s plan for our lives may be quite different than what we planned. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.

Mons. Richard J. Arnhols

—Padre Joseph J. Juknialis

Administradores: ¡Compartiendo nuestro Tiempo, ¡Talento, Y Tesoro!

St. John’s Volunteers

While most of our parish groups had to remain inactive during the Covid-19 quarantine months, one group that remained as essential workers were our Food Pantry Volunteers.

Due to the overwhelmingly generous response of many parishioners and others outside of the parish, this dedicated group helped to sort the food, arrange the food bags, and distribute them, observing full social distancing, that sustained our regular families on the monthly list as well

as several new families adversely affected by the quarantine.

We count these among our parish blessings!

Although our church is professionally sanitized in its entirety on a weekly basis, a new ministry has blossomed amid the pandemic. A group of extremely dedicated volunteers ensures that the church pews are properly sanitized after

each Mass or special service. These “first responders” were immediately willing to take on this task when asked. Without their “behind the scenes” assistance, we would have had to reduce the number of Masses even further or engage

a more costly cleaning service.

If you would like to help in either of these ministries, please speak with Fr.
