Why go to Confession? By Fr. Saunders

Some of my Protestant friends have asked why Catholics go to confession. What would you say?

Jesus entered this world to forgive sins. Recall the words of our Lord: "God so loved the world that He gave His

only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." (Jn 3:16)

During His public ministry, Jesus preached about the forgiveness of sins: remember the parables of the Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11ff) or the Lost Sheep (Lk 15:1ff), and His teaching that "There will likewise be more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner than over 96 righteous people who

have no need to repent." (Lk 15:7)

Jesus Himself forgave sins: remember the story of the woman caught in adultery (Jn 8:1ff) or the woman who washed His feet with her tears. (Lk 7:36ff) He also taught us to pray for forgiveness in the "Our Father:" "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." His mission of reconciliation would climax in His passion, death and resurrection: Jesus suffered, died and rose to free us from sin and death.

However, Jesus never trivialized sin or rationalized it. No, for Jesus, sin is sin, a violation of love against God and neighbor.

However, in His divine mercy, Jesus called the sinner to realize the sin, to repent of it, and to be reconciled with God and neighbor.

Confession heard every Sat. at 4 pm in church

F.A.I.T.H. Ministry

Too, often, we get caught up in doing all the things we think are right and good, but miss the opportunity to look up and see the harvest fields. Matthew 9:35-36 says that Jesus went into all the villages preaching, teaching, and healing all the diseases among the people. But

when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion. Matthew 18:10-14 tells of God’s heart for the one through the parable of the lost sheep. “Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” Matthew 18:14 (emphasis added) There are multitudes trapped in the world of human traf-ficking and in the midst of that multitude, rises the indi-vidual voice of each one crying out for freedom. God has called His people to respond to these souls by loosening the bonds of wickedness, undoing heavy burdens, letting the oppressed go free, and breaking every yoke. (See Isaiah 59;16) Our three major front lines for fighting trafficking are our schools, because of how many children they interact with, our health professionals because close to 100 % of victims will have contact with at least one health professional while they are victims, and our faith communities. In communities where faith groups have formed a collaborative to fight trafficking, they are driving the Traffickers out of those communities. On Sunday, July 29, 2018, there will be a personal care donation box for human trafficking victims in the vestibule after each Mass. The following items are needed: travel size shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, chapstick/lip gloss, tissue, facial wipes, personal hygiene wipes, razors, snacks, make-up bags. Tables will be set up outside the church with informational materials about human trafficking and a sign-up roster if you are interested in becoming a member of the St. James Human Trafficking Ministry. Gospel Reflection

Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger?

Even the most independent among us likes to make

changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's

Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most

iconic miracles - the multiplication of the loaves. It is a

sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed

not by bread but by the Body of Christ.

In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were

done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may

have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but

they played little role in the miraculous works

themselves.

Jesus is entirely different.

The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not

only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he

equips his disciples.

First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus

has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was

going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking

about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a

suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy

here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what

good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's

suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the

Apostles to bring order to the crowd.

When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the

fragments left over." In the process, they discover with

wonder that bread has been produced in super

abundance.

In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to

make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us

as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual

solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community

that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus

honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to

participate in his generous work of redemption, just as

we are.

Prayer for our Priests Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests.

Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments.

Help our priests to be strong in their vocation.

Set their souls on fire with love for your people.

Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom.

Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to experience joy in their ministry.

Help them to become instruments of your divine grace.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.

Everyday Stewardship

You sit down at a restaurant and order drinks and an

appetizer. Then you order an entrée with a salad. When

all of that has been consumed, you order a dessert. You

leave after having had a good time, but your pants don't

fit so well now. You are so full you regret ordering all

those courses. Your eyes were bigger than your

stomach. You ordered what you wanted and not what

you needed.

In our daily lives, we find

ourselves wanting many

things. We desire out-

comes and good fortunes

that we think will make all

the difference. However,

oftentimes when we re-

ceive these things, we

only find ourselves want-

ing more. Worse yet, if

we do not get them, we

can see our lives as in-

complete.

God always provides

what we need. It may not

be what we want. Our

eyes can deceive us into

believing that what we receive is not enough to fulfill us.

If we trust in God and seek to only live with what sustains

us rather than dive into excess, we will find that we are

happier, healthier, and at peace. No one should ever

make himself or herself feel overcome by too much of

anything.

God knows what we need even if we cannot see it for

ourselves.

Catholic Q & A Q: “ Let no one put asunder” ... What does our faith teach us about marriage?

A: Pope Francis, offering advice about weddings: "Make your wedding a Christian celebration! What happened in Cana 2,000 years ago, happens today at every wedding celebration; that which makes your wedding full and profoundly true will be the presence of the Lord who reveals himself and gives his grace. It is his presence that offers the "good wine", he is the secret to full joy..." Read about God's plan regarding the marriage bond and the grace of the sacrament of Matrimony in your Catechism Of The Catholic Church. For example, Paragraph 1661: "The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on their way to eternal life."

Our own Choral Praise hymnal, in the section labeled Marriage, features a familiar David Haas song called 'Where There Is Love.'

"Where there is love, there is God. The love of God has gathered us together, Alleluia. Love is patient, love is kind, never jealous, never proud, never seeking for oneself, Love rejoices in the truth, love will endure." J. P. Alegria

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:8

As generous distributors of God's manifold grace, put your gifts at the service of one another, each in the measure he has received. The one who speaks is to deliver God's message. The one who serves is to do it with the strength provided by God. Thus, in all of you God is to be glorified through Jesus Christ.
