BACKGROUND
■ In 2013, the Johns Family Estate donated more than 300 hectares (750 acres) to the Central Okanagan Land Trust (COLT). The new park has been combined with 100 hectares (250 acres) from the existing Cedar Mountain Regional Park to create 1000 acres of continuous parkland.
■ COLT’s mission statement is to protect land for wildlife and parks so biodiversity and natural features are preserved for future generations.
■ RDCO is leasing the land from COLT for 99 years and has designated the land as a Regional Conservation Park.
■ The park was severely impacted by the Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park fire in 2003.
■ Cedar Mountain Regional Park is currently open to the public; however, the donated lands will remain closed until the completion of the park management plan.
The Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park is over 400hectares (1000 acres) and is located on the doorstep of the communities of the Okanagan Mission area of Kelowna, and is withinthe South Slopes of the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO).
Johns Family Nature ConservancyRegional Park Management Plan
WHAT IS A “REGIONAL CONSERVATION PARK”?
■ A conservation park is a designated park area that is managed for the protection or enhancement of habitat values of vegetation and wildlife.
■ Within a conservation park, environmental processes are able to take their natural course and management practices may occur at the detriment of asthetics or public access.
■ A conservation park is able to provide some compatible recreation opportunities, however, they are generally passive in nature. Some examples are nature viewing and study purposes.
■ Built structures within a conservation park should be limited and kept to a level that preserves the integrity of the natural resources the park is meant to protect.
■ A management plan acts as a guide for acceptable future development and use of a park.
■ The managment plan for the Johns Family Nature Conservancy is needed to set out clear direction for:
- Wildlife and habitat conservation - Passive recreational and educational activities - Future actions and investments for the protection of the park
WHY CREATE A MANAGEMENT PLAN?
Johns Family Nature ConservancyRegional Park Management Plan
A central part of the management plan for the Johns Family NatureConservancy will be to understand the environmental values of the park and consider how to support a healthy park environment.
WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS?
■ North-facing slopes ■ Kelowna Crags ■ Abundant rocky outcrops, large boulders, and shallow gulleys ■ Only a few patches of trees remain after the 2003 Okanagan
Mountain Park fire. ■ Regionally significant creeks; Bertram Creek and Lebanon Creek ■ Seasonal and year-round wetlands ■ High biological diversity and Species At Risk
WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO SUPPORT AHEALTHY ENVIRONMENT?
■ Recreational uses; walking, biking, and rock-climbing ■ Agricultural uses and effects ■ Natural and human disturbances ■ Noxious and invasive weeds ■ Urban encroachment
WHAT COULD SOME OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PRIORITIES BE FOR THE PARK MANAGEMENT PLAN?
■ Protecting areas that have been classified as biodiversity hotspots ■ Strategies to manage park visitors and protect environmental resources ■ Restoring and enhancing the riparian habitats
Johns Family Nature ConservancyRegional Park Management Plan
PARK ENVIRONMENT
STEWARDSHIP, RESEARCH, & EDUCATION
IS THERE ANY RESEARCH HAPPENING IN THE PARK NOW?
■ Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has temperature and relative humidity sensors to understand future climate and water demands. ■ The Range Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural
Resource Operations has released bio-control agents to control tansy ragwort (Senecio jacobaea); a noxious weed that causes environmental deterioration, loss of pasture, and livestock deaths.
WHAT TYPE OF RESEARCH WOULD BENEFIT THE PARK?
■ Post fire succession and recovery ■ Impacts of recreation and human use ■ Species At Risk ■ Invasive species presence and management
WHAT ARE SOME POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITIES FORSTEWARDSHIP AND EDUCATION IN THE PARK?
■ An outdoor classroom/learning area ■ A valued destination for local fieldwork ■ Development of an environmental performance scorecard ■ A location for scientific research and citizen science.
Do you have any research ideas for the park?

PARK ACCESS & ACTIVITIES
HOW CAN YOU ACCESS THE PARK?
Johns Family Nature ConservancyRegional Park Management Plan
Public vehicular and pedestrian access to the Johns Family NatureConservancy Regional Park is available via the unpaved portion of Chute Lake Road to a gravel parking lot/staging area located at thenorth-east corner of the park. A secondary access exists from Lakeshore Road up to the northwest corner of the park, which historically provided access to the family’s homestead. This access is in poor condition with steep road grades and is not intended for public access.
The former Cedar Mountain Regional Park portion of the propertyremains open for public use. The remainder of the donatedparklands will remain closed until the park managament plan is complete.
WHAT ARE SOME QUESTIONS THE MANAGEMENT PLAN SHOULD ADDRESS?
■ Where should the regional park be accessed from? ■ How should the regional park be accessed? ■ What level of mobility of users should the park provide access for? ■ What currect park uses should be continued or discontinued? ■ What new park uses should be considered?
WHAT ARE SOME OPPORTUNITIES ANDCHALLENGES FOR ACCESS AND USE?
■ Achieving balance between conservation and recreational goals ■ Ability for park users to experience a spectacular natural environment ■ Protection of a connected, large ecosystem for future generations to
enjoy ■ Lack of community services ■ Personal safety (slopes, loose rock, dead trees, wildfires, gravel trucks) ■ Agricultural impacts
PARK ACCESS & ACTIVITIES

PARK NEIGHBOURS
The Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park is surrounded byboth privately owned and provincially owned lands. These lands areused in different ways that will need to be taken into consideration whencreating the managment plan.
WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND THE PARK?
■ Resource protection areas cover most of the boundary ■ UREP Crown lands to the east and west totalling 313 hectares ■ The area has been identified by First Nations as traditional territory ■ Chute Lake gravel pit and Montage gravel pit are located to the south ■ Parks and open spaces and single and two family residential uses
abut the northeast corner
■ The UREP lands were designated by the Province in 2013 for the use, recreation, and enjoyment of the public ■ These lands support a significant wildlife and ecosystem corridor
along the south slopes ■ Development and activities are limited, however, they could include:
- Range - Mining - Guide outfitters - Forestry - Trap lines - Grazing
■ Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park ■ Lebanon Creek Greenway Regional Park ■ Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park ■ Bertram Creek Regional Park
WHAT ARE THE UREP LANDS?
