How firm a foundation
LHS 392 CAL 293
‘K-’, in J. Rippon’s ‘Selection’, 1787, alt.
(ascribed to Richard Keen)
How firm a foundation
1. How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He has said
Who unto the Saviour for refuge have fled?
How firm a foundation
2. Fear not, He is with you, O be not dismayed:
For He is your God, and will still give you aid:
He’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
Upheld by His righteous, omnipotent hand.
How firm a foundation
3. When through the deep waters He calls you to go,
You won’t have the rivers of woe overflow;
For He will be with you, your troubles to bless,
And turn to your good in your deepest distress.
How firm a foundation
4. When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie,
His grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply;
The flame shall not hurt you: His only design
Your dross to consume, and your gold to refine.
How firm a foundation
5. The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose
He will not, He cannot, desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell shall endeavour to shake,
He never will leave and will never forsake. †
OPENING
M: Friends in Christ: We have come to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Consecration of this Church to the service of God.
Here those who believe in him are nourished by his word;
here those who have been reborn in the waters of baptism are fed with the bread of life;
OPENING
and here those who have received his Holy Spirit offer their prayers and present their bodies as a living sacrifice to our heavenly Father.
GREETING
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
PRAYERM: Let us pray.Heavenly Father, as you have done for
the past 125 years, continue to fill this place with your gracious presence, and build up your people through your gospel as they gather here and call on you; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
WORD OF GOD
M: Everything is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. Our Lord Jesus Christ says: If two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.
CONSECRATION
M: This altar is consecrated in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
Here is the crucifix, the sign of Christ’s sacrificial death.
CONSECRATION
From here the forgiveness of God is proclaimed.
From here we receive the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper, the body and blood of Christ given and shed for the forgiveness of sins.
CONSECRATION
God be present here to: pardon †his people, confirm † their faith, hear † their prayers, bless † them, and feed † them with the bread of life.
C: Amen.
CONSECRATION
M: This font is consecrated in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
Here God washes clean from sin and gives new life,
so that day by day we who have been baptized keep on drowning the old nature we were born with,
CONSECRATION
so that everything selfish and sinful in us should die
and the new nature God has given us in baptism should come to life
and we live as new people who do what is right and good
and live with God forever. God receive into his kingdom all who
come here to be baptised.C: Amen.
CONSECRATION
M: This pulpit and this lectern are consecrated in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
CONSECRATION
Here God’s Word is read and proclaimed,
the Law to show us our sins and bring us to repentance,
the Gospel to show us God’s goodness in Christ,
to create and sustain a new life of faith active in love.
CONSECRATION
God grant that his word of truth be faithfully proclaimed here for the salvation of sinners and their preparation for service.
C: Amen.
CONSECRATION
M: This house of worship and everything in it, is consecrated in the name of the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit †.
FIRST READING
R: The first reading for the Celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Consecration of Trinity Lutheran Church is written in chapter eight of First Kings, beginning at verse 22.
1 Kings 8:22-30 CEV
1 Kings 8:22-3022Solomon stood facing the altar with
everyone standing behind him. Then he lifted his arms toward heaven 23and prayed:
LORD God of Israel, no other god in heaven or on earth is like you!
1 Kings 8:22-30
You never forget the agreement you made with your people, and you are loyal to anyone who faithfully obeys your teachings. 24My father David was your servant, and today you have kept every promise you made to him.
1 Kings 8:22-3025LORD God of Israel, you promised my
father that someone from his family would always be king of Israel, if they do their best to obey you, just as he did.
26Please keep this promise you made to your servant David.
1 Kings 8:22-3027There's not enough room in all of
heaven for you, LORD God. How could you possibly live on earth in this temple I have built? 28But I ask you to answer my prayer. 29This is the temple where you have chosen to be worshiped. Please watch over it day and night and listen when I turn toward it and pray.
1 Kings 8:22-3030 I am your servant, and the people of
Israel belong to you. So whenever any of us look toward this temple and pray, answer from your home in heaven and forgive our sins.
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: The Psalm is Psalm 841LORD God All-Powerful, your temple is
so lovely! 2Deep in my heart I long for your temple, and with all that I am I sing joyful songs
to you.C: One day in your temple is better
than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 3LORD God All-Powerful, my King and my God,
sparrows find a home near your altars; swallows build nests there to raise their young.
C: One day in your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 4You bless everyone who lives in your house,
and they sing your praises. 5You bless all who depend on you for
their strength and all who deeply desire to visit your
temple. C: One day in your temple is better
than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 6When they reach Dry Valley, springs start flowing,
and the autumn rain fills it with pools of water.
7Your people grow stronger, and you, the God of gods, will be seen in
Zion.C: One day in your temple is better
than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 8LORD God All-Powerful, the God of Jacob,
please answer my prayer! 9You are the shield that protects your
people, and I am your chosen one. Won't you
smile on me?C: One day in your temple is better
than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 10One day in your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
I would rather serve in your house, than live in the homes of the wicked.
C: One day in your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
R: 11Our LORD and our God, you are like the sun
and also like a shield. You treat us with kindness and with
honor, never denying any good thing to those
who live right.C: One day in your temple is better
than a thousand anywhere else.
PSALM 84 CEV
12LORD God All-Powerful, you bless everyone who trusts you.C: Glory to the Father, and the Son,
and the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning is now and
will be for ever. Amen.
SECOND READING
R: The second reading is written in chapter two of First Peter, beginning at verse one.
1 Peter 2:1-10 CEV
1 Peter 2:1-10
Stop being hateful! Quit trying to fool people, and start being sincere. Don't be jealous or say cruel things about others. 2Be like newborn babies who are thirsty for the pure spiritual milk that will help you grow and be saved. 3You have already found out how good the Lord really is.
1 Peter 2:1-104Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living
stone that people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honored.
5And now you are living stones that are being used to build a spiritual house. You are also a group of holy priests, and with the help of Jesus Christ you will offer sacrifices that please God.
1 Peter 2:1-106It is just as God says in the Scriptures,"Look! I am placing in Zion
a choice and precious cornerstone. No one who has faith in that one will be
disappointed.”
1 Peter 2:1-107You are followers of the Lord, and that
stone is precious to you. But it isn't precious to those who refuse to follow him. They are the builders who tossed aside the stone that turned out to be the most important one of all. 8They disobeyed the message and stumbled and fell over that stone, because they were doomed.
1 Peter 2:1-109But you are God's chosen and special
people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things that he has done.
1 Peter 2:1-10
The Scriptures say,10"Once you were nobody. Now you are
God's people. At one time no one had pity on you.
Now God has treated you with kindness."
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.C: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
We sing:
Not to us, O Lord, the glory,
LHS 256 CAL 293
Otto E. Thiele (1901-1971)•
Not to us, O Lord, the glory
1. Not to us, O Lord, the glory,But to Thee all honour be;Thou alone in grace hast led us,Thou hast made us one in Thee. Here unitedly as brethren,Joyful, we our voices raise,Laud Thy grace, extol Thy mercy,Hymn Thy love, and sing Thy praise.
Not to us, O Lord, the glory
2. Humbly, Lord, we seek Thy pardonFor the sins of by-gone years,Loveless words and deeds and
judgements,Little faith, and baseless fears;Grace from Thee alone can coverAll the ill that we have done:We have sinned, grant Thy
forgivenessThrough the blood of Thy dear Son.
Not to us, O Lord, the glory
3. Give us steadfastness, and keep us
True to Thee, and to Thy Word:If in weakness we should waver,Strengthen us, Thine aid afford.Let us grow in grace and knowledge,Grow in faith and fervent love;Guide us, guard us, bless us, lead us, Till we share the home above.
Not to us, O Lord, the glory
4. One in Thee, let us go forward,Make us strong to do Thy will;Give us zeal to serve Thee truly,With Thy love our spirits fill.Living for the Christ who bought us,Let us, by Thy Spirit led,Spend ourselves, be spent in labour,For Thy kingdom’s growth and
spread.†
GOSPEL
M: The holy gospel is written in chapter ten of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at verse 22.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
John 10:22-30 CEV
John 10:22-3022That winter, Jesus was in Jerusalem
for the Temple Festival. 23One day he was walking in that part of the temple known as Solomon's Porch, 24and the people gathered all around him. They said, "How long are you going to keep us guessing? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly!”
John 10:22-3025Jesus answered:I have told you, and you refused to
believe me. The things I do by my Father's authority show who I am. 26But since you are not my sheep, you don't believe me. 27My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me, 28and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost.
John 10:22-30
No one can snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father gave them to me, and he is greater than all others. No one can snatch them from his hands, 30and I am one with the Father.
This is the gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Give hands that help, and single sight,
And feet that walk your way
Because we bear your name.

So clean us out, and make us fit
