    Fr. Matthew Oakland

During the coming weeks, I am asking you to reflect on the stewardship of your treasure for the coming year. This has a dual purpose. For one, it helps us in our own budgeting of the resources you entrust to us, but even more, this is really about you and your relationship with God. Where does the Lord not just fit into your life, but your own budget?

Our giving to the parish shouldn’t be about simply keeping the lights on or the programs running that we like the most because then it is still essentially about us and serving our own wants and needs. Rather, we are to give our gift to God, a sacrificial offering, in gratitude for all He has done for us. As you take time to PRAY about your gift, I invite you to consider four other “P’s” of giving.

Planned Giving Our giving should be planned. It should be done after reflection upon God’s great gifts for us. It shouldn’t simply be an afterthought, a scramble as the basket nears. If it is to truly come from the heart, if it is to be a true offering, it should be one made intentionally after prayer. To be a good steward is to recognize the gifts that we have received, and plan their proper allocation, whether for taxes, food, housing, recreation, entertainment or directly to the Lord. This doesn't mean that we rule out spontaneous giving when inspired but that we at least build the foundation first. Creating a plan also makes sure that we give the Lord his proper place.

Priority Giving One of the benefits of planning our giving is that we can make it a priority in our life as expressed by our budget. We don’t simply give from our surplus, from what is left over at the end of the month. We don’t simply give based on what we can dig out when the collection basket nears. Instead, we make our offering a priority in our lives as we recognize Him from whom all good things come. Where does supporting the family business fit in with your other discretionary expenses?

Percentage Giving Abel was the first to make the scriptural tithe. Abraham, Jacob and countless others would follow as they fulfilled God’s Law, a Law which was commended by Christ Himself. As we look at our budget, as we plan our giving, and as we make continuing the work of Christ a priority in our lives, we should strive to follow the example of the saints with the biblical tithe. Love often entails sacrifice. We see

that in our offerings to the Lord, as well—sacrificial offerings.

In the weeks before my ordination, Fr. Jim Lee, the pastor of St. Michaels in Olympia, met with our class to talk about stewardship and giving. He made it very clear that this applied to us as well, something I hadn’t been very good about. The offering of our time and talents is important. We priests do a lot of that. But we are called to make a return to the Lord of all of our gifts, not just some them, which means that it includes our treasure even for those who dedicate their very lives to God’s service.

He also gave us some advice: Make tithing a priority from the beginning. If you start it from the very beginning, it is much easier. And while this may be true and is something you can instill in your children, most do not start there nor are they there presently. As we look at the scriptures, we also see that there are others, like Zacchaeus or the Poor Widow, who give over and above the “norm”. Their generosity always flows from an encounter with the generosity and love of God as it enters into their lives and shapes how they themselves live. This is something that is commendable.

Progressive Giving Are you happy with your present charitable contributions? Do you wish you were able to give more? Consider taking this step, as each year we return to prayer, reexamine our gifts, and adjust our plan: Start with figuring out what percentage you are currently giving, and then figure out where you would like to be. Start taking steps to fulfill what you feel the Lord calling you to do. Family has always been important to me. The thing about family is that we have to support each other. Holy Rosary is our family. Its the place where our life is nourished. Its where we grow together as we share and support each other in trials and celebrate with one another the goodness of God and His blessings to us.

Please take some time to pray about your giving to the Lord in and through our parish in the next year. As you do so, be sure to offer a prayer of thanks for the many blessings you have received, and we have received together, here in our parish family. Thank you for sharing His love with one another.

    Saint of the Week

    This week, we remember

    St. Cecilia. Known as a

    patron of music, little is

    known for certain about

    this 2nd Century Roman

martyr. She is said to have

    been betrothed and

    married against her will.

When she stood firm in her

    desire to remain a virgin,

    her husband respected her

desires and himself converted to the Catholic faith

for which they both were killed. She is a reminder

that, although God doesn’t always give us what we

ask for, He will always bring good out of our love

for Him and for our neighbors. We can pray “Thy

will be done” with confidence that God’s will is

always for the greatest good, even if we don’t see it

immediately. Her feast is November 22.

This last week was a short one with the Veteran’s Day holiday. On Friday, 7th and 8th graders in our Drama Production elective performed ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker and

Aw Shucks!’ Great job to the students onstage and backstage, as well as our Drama elective teachers, Mrs. Weythman & Mrs. Helling, for leading a great production.

Fourth graders began initial planning for their Rube Goldberg machines. They’ve been placed into groups

and started modeling and thinking based on the concepts we’ve learned about mechanical engineering. Their objective is to design and build a complex machine that will perform a simple task in a series of six (or more!)

steps. The machine must use at least three different types of simple machines.

Third-grade students have begun their unit on hermit crabs. Students learned about the life cycle as well as

parts of a hermit crab. Third graders will also be placed into groups to plan, purchase materials, and build an

ideal crab habitat. Hermit crabs names still being decided!

School parents, please make sure you are signed up for a teacher/parent conference Mon-Wed of

Thanksgiving week (11/25-11/27). Information on how to sign-up is available in the weekly eFC.

At Holy Rosary School, tradition and innovation converge to provide a leading-edge education that is grounded in the Catholic faith. Students are engaged by enthusiastic teachers who provide hand-on curricula

designed to spark creativity and encourage critical thinking. Each child is given room to discover and

develop their own unique gifts. At every grade level, faith meets action through service and the teaching of compassion and social justice. Holy Rosary's tight-knit community of passionate teachers and engaged parents creates a safe place where students become leaders from the inside out. Contact

    Caring For Our Common Home

When cleaning up the yard after Autumn’s gorgeous

leaves hit the ground, consider using an old-

fashioned rake or an electric leaf blower rather than a

gas-powered model. Pollutants emitted from a gas-

powered blower in a half hour are equivalent to

those from 440 miles of car travel at 30 mph. Other

gas-powered lawn and garden implements have

    similar impacts.

    The Word was made Flesh:

Following Baby Jesus in the Womb

Weeks 35 and 36 Ever since the Annunciation in March, the baby Jesus has been growing in His mother Mary's womb. Baby now weighs over 5 ½ pounds, with a total length of 20 ½ inches. Mother’s increasing size is due to the growth of baby and placenta, as well as the increased amount of amniotic fluid. All these factors make

estimating baby’s weight more difficult. Maturation of the lungs and respiratory system will enable baby to breathe on his own outside of the mother. Only 4 weeks until the due date! Approximate due date: December 25
