FABRICS
Plain weave
Simple basic weave, easy handling of the fabrics
through good dimensional stability, nonslip prop-
erties, closed fabric pattern, little fraying when
cutting
Twill weave
Diagonal weave degree, higher strength and ri-
gidity of the laminate through low thread diver-
sion. Good impregnation properties, pliant and
therefore better suited for moulded parts than
Plain fabric
Satin weave 1/3
Lower thread diversion than in twill fabrics results
in a particularly smooth finish, very good draping
properties, especially for very spherical moulded
parts
Atlas weave 1/7
Even less thread diversion than in satin fabrics,
also suitable for especially smooth surfaces and
very good draping properties
Other weave types
Unidirectional UD weave
Thin warp threads are only used to fix the warp threads. This results
in much higher strength and rigidity in warp direction compared to
bidirectional fabrics.

GLASS FIBER FABRICS
Glass fiber fabrics or glass filament fabrics are webs manufactured
from filaments and/or staple fibers on weaving looms consisting of
at least two thread systems (warp and warp). The type of weave, the
linear weights of the threads and the set determine the processing
properties of the fabrics. They must have a size or finish suitable
for plastics.
Our glass fiber fabrics are available with different weaves such as
plain, twill and satin. They are equipped with a finish that makes
the fabrics more pliant and optimises bonding with the resin sys-
tem.
By default, this finish is suitable for epoxy and polyester resins; ad-
ditional finish types (e.g. for phenol resin) available upon request.
Our product range also includes Injectex
fabric. This was developed specifically for
RTM and vacuum infusion processes.
Laminates manufactured with glass fab-
rics exhibit a resin content of 35-60%.

Glass roving fabrics are woven webs from endless e-glass roving
yarns. Direct roving, contrary to filament yarn, does not have a
protective twist. The filament diameters of the individual fibers are
slightly larger normally ranging from 9 mµ to 25 mµ.
Roving fabric is found particularly often in boat and tank system
construction.
Our roving fabrics are available with Plain and twill weave.

PEEL PLY
CARBON Fiber FABRICS
Peel ply fabrics are made from synthetic polyamide yarns. They are
marked by high elasticity and high tensile strength.
Our peel plies are washed and thermofixed. This ensures that the
fabric does not shrink during a possible tempering process and no
residues remain on the laminate after removal.
Carbon fabrics are manufactured from polyacrylonitrile fibers
(PAN), which are incrementally carbonised after chemical pretreat-
ment.
Contrary to fiberglass fabric carbon fiber fabrics are distinguished
by a significantly higher tensile strength, higher compression and
flexural strengths as well as a higher elastic modulus. The specific
weight is approx. 1/3 lower. They are therefore used for heavy-duty
lightweight components.
Typical applications are aircraft construction, motor sports as well
as the sports equipment industry.
Note: To make the carbon fabrics resistant to
cuts a powder binder can be added to them
upon request!

MULTILAYER FABRICS
Multilayer fabrics consist of two or more fabric layers woven to-
gether.
Reinforcement materials from a thickness of 0.15 millimetres to
several millimetres can thus be achieved.
For example, the finishes may exhibit a fine, smooth structure on
the one side and a coarser structure on the other side.
The woven connection of the individual layers not only improves
the peel strength (no shearing of the individual fabric layers) but
also the breaking characteristics of the laminate.
Multilayer fabrics exhibit outstanding draping properties even at
mass per unit areas of up to 800 g/m². Spherical (ball-shaped) com-
ponents can be processed easily and efficiently.

Parabeam® spacer fabric consists of two fabric face sheets con-
nected by web threads.
The web threads stand up when the fabric is impregnated with
resin.
After curing a very lightweight and strong sandwich structure is
obtained that can be used in a wide variety of applications, e.g. in
boat building, lorry superstructures, tank linings, etc.

General notes
The viscosity of the laminating resin should lie between 500 and
1000 mPas. Extremely low-viscosity resins must be thixotroped to
prevent the resin from running from the webs.
The resin content in the spacer fabrics laminate should be at least
50 percent by weight, preferably 60 weight per cent, to achieve
good mechanical properties of the sandwich.
(A study on the impact of the resin content on the mechanical
properties can be requested, if needed.)
The spacer fabric is impregnated according to known techniques.
Manually: Pouring, brushing, roll-on. Mechanical: Spraying or pour-
ing (nozzle or film) or immersion with squeezing.
Following impregnation with resin the spacer fabric expands with-
out auxiliary means to the laminate height provided by the webs
as soon as the pressure forces applied by roller or nip roller are re-
moved.
Notes for working with polyester resins
When processing the spacer fabrics with polyester or vinyl ester
resins a styrene emission reducer (e.g. 0.8% BYK S-740) must be
mixed in or low styrene emission resins (also called LSE resins) must
be used. Otherwise curing is inhibited through styrene vapour
trapped in the cavity. The amount of resin in the webs of the spacer
fabric laminate is comparatively low and the exothermic process of
the curing reaction is therefore reduced. We recommend choosing
a highly reactive resin type, a rapid curing recipe and/or short-term
heat application to “kick o! ” the curing. The required potlife of the
resin can be adjusted, if necessary, using an inhibitor.
Processing technique in manual laminating
I. Cut the spacer fabrics with hand scissors (preferably with mi-
cro-serration) or electric scissors.
II. Evenly apply approx. 50-70% of the entire resin amount need-
ed for the spacer fabrics. It is recommended to apply the spacer
fabric layer “wet on wet” to the previous laminate layer.
III. Apply the dry spacer fabric without wrinkles and roll down with
grooved roller or disk roller. Careful rolling down achieves a uni-
form bond to the laminate below without blemishes. Laminat-
ing resin is already drawn into the webs through the capillary
forces.
IV. Uniform pressureless application of the remaining laminating
resin amount, preferably using a short pile velour roller. The
resin is drawn into the spacer fabric after a short time. “Heavy“
rolling is not necessary and may cause wrinkles to form.
V. Final rolling over the spacer fabric layer with the grooved or
disk roller. Rolling should be done gently, with little pressure,
preferably in weft direction. The best surface is achieved by
slightly positioning the roller at an angle and rolling “against
the thread” of the spacer fabric. The roller diameter should be
between 30 – 40 mm.
VI. Edge finishes can be simply produced by pressing down the
spacer fabric layer along the side.
VII. Additional layers (including spacer fabric) can be laminated “wet
on wet” onto the spacer fabric layer. The number of top layers de-
pends on the height and type of the spacer fabric.

GLASS NON-CRIMP FABRICS
Unidirectional and multiaxial non-crimp fabrics normally consist of
one to four layers. Fiber orientations from 0/90° to 0/45/90/135° or
+/-45° as well as mixed fiber systems (e.g. glass filament fabrics in
0°-, aramid fibers in 45°- and 135°- and polyester fibers in 90° di-
rection) are possible. Our standard products are presented below.

CARBON NON-CRIMP FABRICS
Carbon non-crimp fabrics are distinguished in that the fibers are
lying stretched, i.e. without the curvatures in the laminate common
to the fabrics. This allows for the full power to be received in the
laminate. In addition, carbon fibers exhibit greater tensile strength
and significantly higher rigidity than glass fibers. The specific
weight is approx. 30% lower. They are therefore particularly suita-
ble for lightweight components where extreme strengths coupled
with low weight are required. With biaxial carbon non-crimp fabrics
two layers of unidirectional non-crimp fabrics are sown at angles of
+/-45°. The draping capability (flexibility) of the non-crimp fabric is
high. Special advantage of biaxial non-crimp fabrics: Torsion layers
can be laminated without waste.

ECR GLASS & ECR NON-WOVENS
SAERCORE GLASS COMPLEX
These are ECR glass fibers with extremely high corrosion resistance.
ECR glass, because of its outstanding resistance to acids and alka-
line solutions, is particularly suitable for use in areas where high
chemical resistance is required.
This product line is made up of complexes from glass CSM and PP
non-wovens for the series production of many different compo-
nents with extremely high quality. Typical applications for SAER-
CORE complexes include the automotive industry, boat building,
rail vehicle construction, sanitary installations as well as the pro-
duction of agricultural vehicles.
SAERCORE complexes are distinguished by optimal characteristics
in vacuum and injection processes (RTM, RTM light, low-pressure
compression as well as infusion, etc.).
Advantex Glass
Advantex Glass combines the electrical and mechanical proper-
ties of traditional E-glass and the high chemical resistance of ECR-
glass.

WELAPREPREGS
PREPREG/HEXPLY
The prepreg matrix usually consists of a mixture of epoxy resin
and hardener. Prepregs are stored at -18 °C to prevent resin and
hardener from reacting.
Prepregs are processed in a mould under pressure and tempera-
ture application.
Prepregs were originally developed for the aircraft industry but are
meanwhile used in many applications where high temperature re-
sistance, superior durability as well as extremely light weights of
the material are required.

EPOXY LAMINATING RESINS AND HARDENERS
WELA EP 2110/2150, RTM, Infusion, Hand-laminating
The EP 2110 system is suitable for a broad range of applications
and stands out by an excellent price/performance ratio. It is suit-
able for all common processing methods.
When using the hardeners EH 2294 and 2295 the potlife can be indi-
vidually adjusted from approx. 15 min. to approx. 7 h by mixing the
hardeners at a desired ratio. Subsequent tempering is highly recom-
mended. Especially suited for RTM and vacuum infusion processes
because of the low mixing viscosity.
In combination with the EH 2294 and 2295 the matrix sytem is
approved by the GL.
Using the hardeners EH 2204, 2206 and 2208 the resin can be lami-
nated very well “by hand“ and cures at room temperature. With the
hardener 2208 a TG of approx. 130 °C can be achieved; it is there-
fore very suitable for mould making.
WELA EP 2150, RTM, Infusion, Hand-laminating
The EP 2150 system has a very low basic viscosity and great flow
properties. It is therefore especially suited for RTM and vacuum in-
fusion processes. It does not crystallize even at low temperatures.
EP 2150 can be used with all hardeners and has a very wide range
of applications. The resin is “clear as glass”.
Together with the hardener EH 2204 it is very suitable for the pro-
duction of exposed carbon or Alutex parts. Using the hardeners EH
2204, 2206 and 2208 the resin can be laminated very well “by hand“
and cures at room temperature. By mixing the hardeners EH 2294
and 2295 the potlife can be set individually from approx. 15 min. to
approx. 7 h. Subsequent tempering is urgently recommended with
these hardeners.
Together with hardener EH 2205 the resin is well suited for boat re-
pairs since the system cures quickly and without tackiness even at
very low temperatures (from approx. 3 °C) even at high humidity.
With hardener EH 2208 the system is GL-approved.

WELA EP 2180, RTM, Infusion
The EP 2180 / EH 2202 system with its mixing viscosity of approx.
120 mPas has one of the lowest viscosities on the market. The very
long open time of approx. 5 h at room temperature makes it espe-
cially suitable for the infusion of oversize parts (e.g. rotor blades of
wind power systems, hulls, etc.). The system possesses the GL ap-
proval.

The laminating resin system EP 2190 with the hardener EH 2290 is
marked by its especially high temperature resistance. After appro-
priate tempering the service temperature (TG) lies at 200 °C.
Because of the very low viscosity the resin is particularly suitable for
vacuum infusion or RTM processes. The system can also be used for
components subject to heavy loads as well as for mould making.

Properties of the WELA-Flammstop system
The formulated EP/EH system displays little shrinkage. The high
portion of filling material consisting of flame protection additives
reduces shrinkage even further. This almost eliminates the tenden-
cy toward stress cracking.
The WELA EP Gelcoat does not split off any low-molecular reaction
products. This means that the micro-porosity is very low in the gel-
coat layer. The density of the EP Gelcoat is 1.42 g/cm³.
EP wet laminates
Can be brushed on with WELA Flammstop 547/28 or sprayed with
WELA Flammstop SG 1/SH 2.
With S4, SR 2 and ST 2 approval, tested in accordance with DIN 54837
(E 1/1991), classified in accordance with DIN 5510, Part 2.
Fulfils the requirements of Airbus Industries in accordance with
ABD 0031 and the regulations for smoke density and toxicity in
accordance with FAR 25.853 (d) and ABD 0031.

FLAMMSTOP RESINS
Halogen-free WELA fire protection with reactive and non-reactive
fillers for epoxy resin high-performance composites.
WELA fire protection solutions turn your high-performance com-
positions from epoxy or vinyl ester resins into flame-retardant com-
posite materials.
Halogen-free, flame-retardant, self-extinguishing, non-dripping,
low smoke gas content, low toxicity
The WELA Flammstop system was principally developed for use in
rail vehicles on public transport networks. Other applications are
being developed. It fulfils various national and international fire
protection standards while maintaining the stipulated processing
technologies. Nationally tested in accordance with DIN 54837 [draft
01.91] observing the “Principles for testing and classifying the fire
behaviour of materials and components in rail vehicles in accord-
ance with DIN 5510, Part 2” [draft 06.01] The requirements for S
4, SR 2 and ST 2 are fulfilled with sufficient safety for various fiber
composite systems with WELA Flammstop. The Flammstop system
was tested in the NBS smoke density chamber in accordance with
ASTM 662, and the demand for low-toxicity smoke gases was met.
The demands of Airbus Industries regarding smoke density as de-
fined by FAR Part 25.853 (d) and ABD 0031 as well as toxicity as
defined by ABD 0031 were met.
Following application and gelling-on of the WELA Flammstop EP
gelcoat work can continue without a solid flame protection agent,
e.g. with the RTM methods. Processing with commercial common
EP prepregs is also possible. To achieve greater flame protection
efficiency with material characteristic values, reactive liquid flame
protection agents can be used. Good bonding of the epoxy resin
on the EP gelcoat has been proven in tests.

Release agents are used for the removal of fiber composite parts
from the mould. They are applied as parting layer between mould
and component and prevent them from sticking.
RELEASE AGENTS
The use of internal release agents significantly reduces the con-
sumption of external release agents. High mould removal numbers
can be achieved. Furthermore, the use of internal release agents
improves the flow properties of the resin and thus the finish of the
component.

NOMEX HONEYCOMBS
Nomex honeycombs are non-metallic structural materials made
from Nomex® paper and coated in addition with phenol resin. They
are distinguished by superb mechanical properties in relationship
to their weight. This includes especially great stability in the pres-
ence of heat and humidity, temperature resistance up to 180 °C as
well as high flexibility allowing the troublefree shaping of the hon-
eycombs. Our Nomex honeycombs are available in industrial grade
(A10) and aeronautic grade (A1).

WELAFILMS
Vacuum bagging film is used to envelop
the complete form or the layer composi-
tion with various vacuum processes. Using
a vacuum pump the air trapped under the
film is sucked out thus creating a vacuum
and pressing the laminate together.
A separating film is used as the bottom layer in the laminate struc-
ture. It separates the laminate from the respective tool.
