After 30 years as a portrait photographer, Kim

Keffer has begun sharing her paintings at her

studio and gallery at 172 E. Fifth Ave. (the corner

    of Hamlet & E. Fifth).

Keffer and her husband, Verne, moved here three

years ago. Shes a country girl from West Virginia,

so at first all the noise was overwhelming. But she

finds reprieve in taking bright, detailed photos of

insects and flowers in the neighborhood. All of her

work shows this appreciation for detailshe even

paints final touches using a magnifying glass. You

have to get up close and really examine the canvas

to find small woodland creatures, detailed flora,

and other symbols in the paintings.

In addition to painting, Keffer works part time and

helps Verne mow lawns at 25 properties around

the neighborhood. She received a supplies grant

from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, as well as

an IDA matching loan from OSU Extension.

Her next goal is to set up a portrait studio where

she can offer family pictures, which are important

to her. They boost your self-esteem, and some-

times you end up seeing your family in a whole

    new light, she says.

She recalls from the gallerys grand opening last

month, I was so caught up in talking to people

that I didnt notice it, but Verne pointed out that as

he stood back watching people looking at my

paintings, hed see their faces light up. Thats all I

want. I find my way out of the dark when I paint,

and I want my work to have that effect on others.

    Meet Your Neighbor: Kim Keffer

Six Weinland Park neighbors have been hired to

serve as resident engagement specialists with the

Weinland Park Collaborative under a grant from the

    Annie E. Casey Foundation.

These familiar faces will be talking to WP

neighbors over the coming weeks and months so

they can accurately represent our interests andconcerns when the Annie E. Casey Foundation

makes funding and program decisions to help young

children, their parents, and other caregivers in WP.

    Godman Guild Association and Community

Properties of Ohio cooperated to provide special

    training for this work.

When you see them out and about, stop and say

    hello!

    Thanks

The civic association is very grateful to Jean Pitman and her

multi-talented and dedicated Story Book cadre for distributing

this newsletter to the majority of our neighbors in August.

And thanks, too, to 12 volunteers from Rock City Church who

graciously stepped in to take care of our litter clean-up last

monthand a great team from Directions for Youth & Families

that spent the day helping out at 4th Street Farms on Aug. 9.

Wont you show your pride and lend a hand this month? Our

September litter clean-up will coincide with Mayor Colemans

Pick It Up campaign on Saturday, Sept. 7. Join us! WP Festival: Kenji Harris, who lives with his family in WPand attends WP Elementary School.

Many thanks for a long summers work by two of our young

Weinland Park neighbors, Joleah Mays and Amin Ebady. Joleah and

Amin joined forces with young people from other Columbus neighbor-

hoods to give the Weinland Park Story Book Project a big push

forward. Guided by the Wexner Center for the Arts Jean

Pitman and Godman Guilds Anjanette Robertson and Sherri Sims,

this youth team walked through the neighborhood daily, led by

Joleah and Amin, to collect more than 100 stories from WP

residents, workers, and volunteers. And then they worked equally

hard illustrating many of the collected stories, whether in their studio

at the Wexner Center, at drawing workshops at Godman Guild, or at

Red Circle gatherings in the park.

Their work will be continued by others this fall. The

illustrated stories will be compiled into a book and published next

year to be given back to WP. The hope is for this book to capture the

voices of Weinland Park past and present, including many who have

    been previously invisible.
