FROM THE DESK OF

Chris Carter, Head of School

Dear Parents,

It’s a short week, and this will be a short edition of the Weekly Words. This week has been marked by exams for our middle school students and various holiday activities for our younger students. I think it is very safe to say that all are excited for the Christmas vacation!

Once again I want to thank you all for your generous support of the Annual Fund. We are 2/3 of the way toward our goal and deeply appreciative of your terrific generosity! If you wish to make a donation in 2018 in order to receive tax benefit, we need to have received it by Dec. 31. You can make a donation online through our website, or mail it to the school and make sure it is postmarked for 2018. Many, many thanks!

A few weeks ago I reported on some retirements at the end of this year. Since then, Mr. Cosey has also spoken to me and indicated his desire to retire at the end of the year. He has been a wonderful part of Middle School for ten years, and I am sad about his news, but I know that he is ready to stay home and enjoy time with Janice. And again, I appreciate having plenty of time to plan for next year, and I am confident that we will maintain and enhance the excellence of our English department.

With regard to next year, I am happy to announce that one retirement opening has been filled. Our wonderful 1st grade teacher and Running Club/Cross-Country Coach, Ms. Wallace, has a passion for health and fitness and is eager to take on new challenges by succeeding Ms. Fontaine as P.E. teacher. Ms. Wallace’s Master’s Thesis involved research on fitness and academic achievement. We are talking about how to enhance the health aspect of our curriculum, even as we make sure we maintain enough movement and exercise in our students’ days. I am excited that Ms. Wallace has agreed to make this move and join Coach Aaron and Coach Jackson on the P.E. team. The three of them will surely be a winning combination! Of course 1st grade will be in excellent hands next year; since we have a single section of

Kindergarten this year, they will all have Mrs. Sanders and be Sweethearts next year, although I suspect Ms. Wallace will occasionally want to help her dear colleague and friend with the 1st graders.

Today at our Lessons and Carols Chapel students from each class or grade are announcing their Advent Project. Thank you for supporting these projects and helping our children to experience the joy of giving as part of Christmas.

Susan and I wish all of you and your children a very Merry Christmas and great joy in the New Year! Enjoy your time together without homework or tests, and I look forward to seeing everyone relaxed and refreshed on January 7.

Warmly,

Chris Carter, D.Min.Head of School

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas…Break‘Twas the night before Christmas break, and all through the school

Not a student was stirring or breaking the rules.

The uniforms were washed and hung up with care,Knowing a new semester would soon be there.

Everyone settled in to the holiday theme,While visions of Christmas Sing danced in their dreams.

Middle Schoolers went home with their study guide packs,While the preschoolers prepared for a long winter’s nap.

When out in the mailbox arose such a clatter,We sprang out of bed to see what was the matter.

When what did our eyes see in the yard?A SMCS letter and a tiny pledge card!

With a sigh of dismay, I was instantly bummed,I knew in a second it was ANNUAL FUND!

The letter explained my money was needed,An “end of the year gift” is perfect it pleaded!

“Now Donate!, Now Pledge! With paper or plastic.”Hurry and give before the tax changes are drastic.

So in this giving season, please donate today,Help St. Mark’s pave the way.

“It All Begins Here”Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
