Hello Summerside Families!
I hope everyone had a nice week. Old Man Winter seems to be hanging on this weekend and we
have flown through the month of January. Every day moves us closer to Spring. That is my story and
I am sticking to it! We had a super week at Summerside and below I want to highlight a few key
points.
Teaching and learning is heart of our day and I am extremely
proud of the work taking place in our classrooms. Mrs. Sim-
mons class is always engaged in top notch instruction when I
stop in the classroom. Students were practicing their weekly
word work and reading comprehension goals individually
and in small groups during Bell Work time. It is a busy time
of day moving in and out of groups with Mrs. Simmons.
Super job Mrs. Simmons and her students!!
Our after school clubs are off and running. I am excited to
publish the first round of articles written by students in our
Journalism Club. Take a peek inside this edition of the
weekly update for the articles. Hats off to our Summerside
Journalism Team!!
What makes Summerside special is our people who work here, our
families, and our students. I couldn't be more happy for Mr. Chester
Troy who serves as our Head Custodian. Chester and Sue Troy are
the proud parents of Pvt. James Troy of the US Marine Corps. Pvt.
Troy just graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parrish
Island, SC on January 16th, 2015. On February 3, 2015 he will be
leaving for Camp Geiger and after that will go on to Missouri for
schooling. Chester and Sue are very proud of their son. Attached is
a photo of him with his sister, Ashley. Our Summerside Family is
proud of him and all the people who serve in the military to preserve
our freedom. Our humble thank you, James.
We will continue to schedule family friendly events. This coming
Friday, we will be hold our Mother/Son Dance at Summerside. It's a
tradition that brings our family together at Summerside. We'll pro-
vide some photos of this event in our upcoming editions.
In closing, I wish everyone a nice weekend with family and friends. Feel free to contact me Monday-
Sunday on my direct cell line at 373-5735 if I can be of assistance. It's an honor serve you!
Have a super weekend!
Bob

kel, 5th Grade Teacher, Journalism Club Supervisor

Fields in the school office at 947-7901.
Winter Recess During the winter months, we will have outside recess to give our kids the chance to get some fresh air and
engage in active play with their friends. Please make sure your children come to school dressed
for the colder temperatures. Students have a 30 minute recess each day and need hats, coats, and gloves to
be prepared for the colder temperatures. We will be going outside every day that it is not raining/snowing
as long as the temperature is above 28 degrees with the wind chill added in. Please send your children pre-
pared to go outside every day.
Random but Mighty
Students in Mrs. Kunkel’s after school journalism class recently completed a brain-storming session to select topics for their first newspaper articles. Their first topic is “Random Acts of Kindness,” which means doing something kind for oth-ers. The act of kindness is random. There is not a reward and there is no warning or par-ticular reason, other than to spread kindness.
As students began to plan for such an event at Summerside, they learned that Random Acts is a week celebration nationally, starting Feb 9
th. It was started by The Ran-
dom Acts of Kindness Foundation, an internationally recognized non-profit organization founded on the powerful belief in kindness, and dedicated to encouraging acts of kind-ness.
What do you think? Are you up for the challenge, Summerside? We challenge you
to perform a random act of kindness. We’ll be watching and reporting!

Considering Weather Related Closings / Delays
In West Clermont, Superintendent Keith Kline makes the decision about emergency
weather school opening delays or full school day closings. Current weather condi-
tions, weather forecasts, road conditions, wind chill and actual temperatures are es-
sential information for determining a school weather emergency. The information
comes from a number of sources.
· Local weather experts
· WCSD supervisor of transportation, and director of business operations
· Local and county government officials
· Law enforcement and safety officials
· Surrounding school superintendents
Dr. Kline’s goal is to decide upon a weather emergency by 5:00 AM. If appropriate, the communication plan is
set into motion, immediately. School delay and closing information is broadcast as soon as possible via:
· All Cincinnati commercial television and radio stations;
· Automated phone system;
· West Clermont Website, www.westcler.org;
· Facebook, www.facebook.com/westclermont;
· Twitter, https://twitter.com/WestCler;
· Mobile app message.
The most used options for weather emergencies are opening delays of one or two hours, and full day school
closings.
**On a rare occasion, weather conditions may become hazardous during the school day. Early dismissals may
be appropriate. In that case, instructions will come from the district office. Messages will be broadcast via the
communication outlets listed above. Parents must be sure that their child knows where to go and what to do if
this should occur. Please create a plan, with your child, for emergency weather related early releases.
Child Focus K+ and Extended Day Delay and Closing information
If West Clermont is on a delay, Morning Extended Day and Morning K+ will be closed. Our afternoon K+
will run. Our K+ program begins at 12:50 pm. Parents will be able to drop their child off at that time to their
K+ teacher. Students will not have a lunch period. Dismissal procedures will be the same. Afternoon Extended
Day will run. Summerside parents can bring their students to the K+ classroom and drop them off. If West
Clermont is closed our programs are closed as well.
Procedures and Processes
Volunteers-All volunteers that work on-on-one with a student or chaperone a field trip must be finger-
printed at the Main Office. There is no cost to be fingerprinted and your fingerprints are good for 5 years.
The Main Office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. in the morning and from 1:00
P.M. – 4:00 P.M. in the afternoon for fingerprinting. Parents do not have to be fingerprinted to eat lunch
with their child or attend a school party.
Phone Calls and Emails for Summerside Teachers - Summerside Parents, communication is a key to
our success in providing your children the education they deserve. In order to expedite communication with
you and our Teaching Staff the best time during the day for our teachers to return your phone calls and your
emails directed to them is at 4:00p.m. each day. Our Teachers also have a window on most days from 8:30-
8:50a.m. but often are in meetings in the morning. The daily schedule is built so the teachers are teaching
students or with students from 9:05-3:45p.m. daily with a 1/2 lunch in the middle of the day. As a result, it is
not possible for teachers to check emails and make phone calls during the instructional day. If they did they
would not be teaching the students. If you need to contact a Teacher (by Phone or Email) during the instruc-
tional day and it is an emergency please call our School Office at 947-7901 and our Office Team can serve
you promptly. We are here to serve you and the process above will streamline important communication dur-
ing the school day while allowing our Teachers to focus on the important work of educating our children.
Lost and Found-At Summerside we have a process for making sure lost and found items get back to
their owner. Any items (coats, hats, gloves, lunchboxes, books, etc.) that are found are taken each day to the
Cafeteria. All students at Summerside know that during noon lunch before they head out to recess that this is
the location they can go to and find misplaced items. Our Cafeteria Supervisors make sure all items brought
to the Cafeteria are returned to their owner in the Cafeteria during noon lunch. The last week of each month
the Cafeteria Supervisors notify all students to check the lost and found each day. On the last day of the
month the lost and found items are bagged up, kept for one week and if not claimed sent to Goodwill. Lost
and found items such as glasses, purses, wallets, and money are held in the Office where they can be claimed.
Food Brought Into School (Birthday Treats) - All Students at Summerside Elementary eat the lunch
provided by the Cafeteria or Pack their lunch. On special occasions when students have birthdays and bring
in birthday treats those treats need to be dropped off in the Office first. It is our hope and expectation that
treats be store bought, clearly listing all ingredients. Our School Clinic Aide (Mrs. Robinson) checks to
see what classroom the birthday treats are for, and checks to see if any students in that class have food
allergies. At that point the treats are taken to the Cafeteria and the Cafeteria Supervisors make sure the stu-
dents received their birthday treats in the Cafeteria with their lunch. Students with a food allergy are provid-
ed at treat by the school Clinic Aid that is safe for their medical condition.
Lunch Guests - Parents/Guardians/and Grandparents are encouraged and welcome to eat lunch with
their children in the Summerside Cafeteria during their child's lunch period. Two special tables have been set
up for our noon lunch period guests. Our Guests will need to check in at the School Office, Our Office Staff
will have you sign in and provide you a security badge and will direct you to the Cafeteria from the Office
once you have checked in.
Procedures and Processes (cont.)
Hats and Toys - Hats are not permitted at any time for students to wear in the building. Once kids enter
our building the no hat rule sets the tone that we are here for schoolwork and that hats are not to be worn in the
building as a matter of respect. Toys are not permitted in the building. Toys are a distraction to learn-
ing. Students just need to bring their backpacks, books and school materials, and that is it. We are here to
learn and toys are a distraction. Playground equipment (balls, etc) will be provided by the school.
Lost Media Center Books - If a student loses a media center book the parent needs to notify Mrs. Fields
in the office regarding who your child is and what book was lost. Mrs. Fields will update the parent on the
process for paying a fee for the lost book to be replaced in the library. Once the parent pays for the lost book,
the teacher will be notified that the student may begin checking out books again.
Winter Recess - We will have outside recess to give our kids the chance to get some fresh air and engage
in active play with their friends. Please make sure your children come to school dressed for the colder temper-
atures. Students have a 30 minute recess each day and need hats, coats, and gloves to be prepared for the cold-
er temperatures. We will be going outside every day that it is not raining/snowing as long as the temperature
is above 28 degrees with the wind chill added in.
