NOTEWORTHY In addition to the league’s Player and Newcomer of the Week selec-tions, several conference players had notable performances, including:

Lasha Petree (BRAD) - Petree averaged 18.5 points, 2.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 block and 1.0 steal to help Bradley split a pair of road games. Playing near her home town of Detroit, Petree opened the season with the seventh 20-point game of her career, scoring a game-high 20 points in a 74-58 win at Oakland to help the Braves post the largest margin of victory in a road season opener in school history and biggest win in a season opener since 2004-05. She also dished out a career-best four assists in the win against the Golden Grizzlies. Petree followed it up by scoring a game-high 17 points in Sunday’s outing at #24/25 Michigan. She had one assist, two blocks and a steal against the nationally ranked Wolverines.

TeTe Maggett (ILS) - The reigning MVC Newcomer of the Year TeTe Maggett recorded two strong performances in the opening week of the season, averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. In Tuesday’s home opener versus Truman State, the senior posted a game-high 21 points, only the fifth 20+ point game of her career. Maggett also led the squad with 16 points and six rebounds on Sunday against BIG EAST opponent, Marquette.

LeAndra Echi (INS) - LeAndra Echi played a big role in the Sycamores’ success over the weekend, recording her first double-double in an ISU uniform in a 59-57 win at Eastern Illinois. The junior played 36 minutes and tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds. She opened her Sycamore career at Kansas last Thursday with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists. Overall during her first week of Division I basketball, Echi averaged team-high minutes, points and rebounds at 28 minutes, 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds in addition to 1.5 steals and one assist per game.

Abby O’Connor (LUC) - Loyola junior forward Abby O’Connor looked to pick up right where she left off last season as the Ramblers opened the 2019-20 campaign with a pair of victories. O’Connor averaged a double-double, chipping in 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists across two contests. In Tuesday’s dominant 89-60 road win at Detroit Mercy, the South Bend, Ind. native finished the night with 11 points and 14 rebounds, post-ing the eighth double-double of her career. A First Team All-MVC selection a year ago, O’Connor saved her best for Friday’s thrilling home-opening 78-76 win over Vermont, leading all scorers with 23 points in addition to seven rebounds, four assists, a block, and a steal.

Alexa Willard (MSU) - Alexa Willard averaged 18.7 points on 57 percent shooting, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game to guide the Lady Bears to a 3-0 start, including a pair of big road wins. She shot at least 50 percent from the floor in every game and went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. Willard tied a career-high with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting in Friday’s win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, draining four 3-pointers with three rebounds, two assists and a block. She posted identical lines of 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting in road wins at No. 23 Minnesota and Boise State, adding five boards at Minnesota and three assists against the Broncos to help the Lady Bears extend their school-record streak to 12 consecutive road wins, tied for the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

Karli Rucker (UNI) - Karli Rucker led UNI to a pair of season-opening wins over North Dakota State and former MVC opponent Wichita State. Rucker tallied 22 points against NDSU on 6-7 shooting from the field and 3-4 shooting from the three-point line. She didn’t miss a field goal for the first three quarters of the game to help guide the Panthers to a 95-63 win. She also notched six assists, a rebound and a pair of steals. Against Wichita State, she scored 18 points on 5-12 shooting with three rebounds and two assists. She scored 17 of her 18 points in the second half to guide UNI to a comeback 61-50 win. The Panthers are 2-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

Makenzie Silvey (SIU) - Makenzie Silvey notched her sixth career 20-plus point performance in SIU’s 103-67 win over SIUE, as she scored 28 points on the strength of 6-of-9 (.667) shooting from behind the arc. The Edwardsville, Ill. product tied her career-highs in 3-balls (6) and field goals made (11), and fell one point short of tying her career-best for points. Silvey’s 28 points are the third-most in a game in the Valley this season.

Mahri Petree (BRAD) - Petree averaged 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game off the bench in her first two outings as a Brave, helping Bradley split a pair of road games. She collected seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in 13 minutes of action and also had two rebounds in Friday’s season-opening 74-58 win at Oakland to help the Braves post the largest margin of victory in a road season opener in school history and biggest win in a season opener since 2004-05. Petree played 17 minutes in Sunday’s outing at #24/25 Michigan, notching four points, five rebounds and one assist against the Wolverines.

Collier shined in two starts averaging 10.0 points and 5.5 assists per game. Against SDSU, she scored nine points, handed out five assists, pulled down two rebounds and nabbed on steal. She followed that with 11 points and six assists also making a key three-pointer late to help hold off the Cyclones.

Juliunn Redmond (ILS) - Redmond has made an immediate impact on this year’s Illinois State squad, starting in both games in the opening week of season, shooting .455 from the field while grabbing seven rebounds and recording three steals.

Jala Johnson (LUC) - Loyola freshman guard Jala Johnson reached double figures in scoring in both of the Ramblers’ victo-ries last week, averaging 11.5 points in addition to 2.0 assists. Out of Toledo, Ohio, Johnson opened her collegiate career in style, coming off the bench to add 13 points and three assists in Loyola’s comprehensive 89-60 win at Detroit Mercy this past Tuesday. She again made an impact off the bench against Ver-mont three days later, chipping in 10 points as part of a thrilling 78-76 victory over the Catamounts.

Gabby Walker (SIU) - Walker scored in double figures in her first game as a Saluki, as the St. Charles, Mo. product scored 10 points on an efficient 3-of-4 shooting, including a perfect 4-for4 from the charity stripe, in SIU’s 103-67 win over SIUE.

Power Five Up AheadThis week, the MVC schedule features four more games against Power Five schools, including UNI at Missouri, Missouri State at Oklahoma, Illinois State at Illinois and Iowa at UNI. The conference sits 2-3 against Power Five opponents after the first week of play as Drake beat Iowa State and Missouri State beat #23 Minnesota in Minne-apolis. Last season, the MVC earned three wins over members of Power Five conferences during the regular season.

Statement WinFresh off a NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, Missouri State opened the season with a wire-to-wire 77-69 win at #23 Minnesota in the first game under head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamil-ton. Missouri State extended its school record with its 11th consecutive road win and picked up its fourth victory during a stretch of five consecu-tive games against AP Top-25 opponents.

Road Streak SurvivesThe Lady Bears extended their school-record road winning streak to 12 games last week with two wins away from home. After running the table in Valley road games last year, MSU has picked up wins at No.13 Iowa State, 23rd-ranked Minnesota and Boise State to tie Princeton for the nation’s longest active road win streak. Both MSU and Princeton have road contests this week.

Reaching the Century MarkThe Salukis improved to 6-0 when hitting the century mark for total points with their 103-67 win over SIUE. Southern’s 103 points in the win over SIUE were the second-most in a game in program history and were the most against a DI opponent in school history. It marked the first time since nearly three years ago (11/26/16) that the Salukis have reached triple-digits and it was the fourth time in which Southern has scored 100 or more points under seventh-year head coach Cindy Stein.

More Ranked W’sThe Lady Bears opened the year with a victory at No. 23 Minnesota for their fourth win in a stretch of five consecutive games against top 25 competi-tion. After beating an unranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi squad on Friday, MSU took down another team getting national recognition Sunday, earn-ing a road win over a Boise State club that was receiving votes in both major polls.

Party Like It’s 2011Loyola picked up a pair of victories to open the 2019-20 campaign, cruising past Detroit Mercy, 89-60, last Tuesday at Calihan Hall before pulling out a thrilling 78-76 win over Vermont in Rogers Park just three days later. The Ramblers currently find themselves off to their best start to a season since going 3-0 to begin the 2011-12 campaign.

Preseason WNITMissouri State will travel to Oklahoma in the Preseason WNIT semifinals Thursday after earn-ing wins over Texas A&M-CC and Boise State last week. A win over the Sooners would put the Lady Bears into the WNIT Championship game (Oregon State or DePaul) on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3:30 PM CT on CBS Sports Network.

Postseason LeagueThe MVC has seen an average of four league teams participate in postseason play in the last 21 sea-sons, including three teams reaching postseason play in 2018-19. Missouri State reached the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth time in program history, while Drake fell to Missouri in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. UNI received a bid to the WNIT for the second-straight season. The Valley has earned multiple NCAA Tournament bids in 12 different sea-sons, including two out of the last three seasons.

Hoops In the Heartland The 2020 Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament will return to the TaxS-layer Center in Moline, Ill., for the fifth-straight season.

Affectionately coined “Hoops in the Heartland,” the four-day event (Mar. 12-15) will showcase all 10 Missouri Valley Conference schools as they compete for the Valley’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The MVC’s agreement with Visit Quad Cities will keep the MVC Women’s Basketball Cham-pionship in TaxSlayer Center through at least 2021.

The 2020 tournament will mark the 13th-con-secutive season in its 38-year history that the event will take place at a neutral site.

The Missouri Valley Conference is one of only seven conferences (out of 32 nationally) where the women’s basketball tournament is played at a neutral site, separate from the men’s championship (AAC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, MVC, Pac-12 and SEC are the others).

Continuing Where She Left OffAfter averaging a team-best 14.6 points per game over the final 10 games of the 2018-19 season, sophomore guard Lasha Petree has picked up where she left off scoring a game-high 20 points in Friday’s win at Oakland and following it up with a game-high 17 points Sunday at #24/25 Michigan. Petree is averaging 18.5 points per game on the young season. The 20-point game at Oakland was the seventh of her career. Of her 20 career games with 10 or more points, Petree has scored at least 15 points 15 times. The Detroit native has averaged 22.0 points per out-ing in her three career games against teams from the state of Michigan.

Climbing the ChartsChelsea Brackmann is once again among the top rebounders in the Mis-souri Valley Conference and the senior forward has already moved up three spots on Bradley’s career rebounding list this season. Brackmann started the year seventh in career rebounds at BU with 723 boards and is now tied for fourth in Bradley history with Carrie Coffman at 740 career rebounds. Brackmann needs 49 rebounds to pass Val Wacket for third all-time on The Hilltop and is 145 from breaking Leti Lerma’s school career mark of 844 rebounds.

Season OpenersBradley is now 27-18 (.600) in season-opening contests after a 74-58 win at Oakland Friday. The win at Oakland was Bradley’s first road win to open a season since 2015-16 (at Detroit) and was the largest margin of victory for the Braves in a season opener dating back to an 87-60 win over Stony Brook to start the 2004-05 campaign. In fact, the 16-point win was the largest in school history in a road season opener, surpassing the previous mark of eight at Detroit (75-67) on Nov. 13, 2015.

Great StartDrake won its fifth-straight season-opener with its 74-67 home victory over 2019 Sweet 16 participant South Dakota State to start the 2019-20 campaign. The Bulldogs have won every opener since dropping the 2014-15 season-opener to South Dakota.

Battle with the DakotasThe win over the Jackrabbits also snapped a two-game losing streak in the series for the Bulldogs and evened it at 2-2. The two teams resumed their rivalry in 2017-18 and SDSU won that meeting at the Knapp Center and the one in Brookings, S.D. last season. Drake’s next game will be at SDSU’s rival, South Dakota, on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs and Coyotes battled last year in Des Moines with Drake claiming a 76-64 win. South Dakota qualified for the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

In-State WinDrake held off a tough Iowa State team, another NCAA team last year, for an 86-81 win Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs and the Cyclones matched the exact same score as last season at Hilton Coliseum in Ames but this time the Bulldogs came out on top. The hard-fought win pulled Drake to within one game in the all-time head to head series between the in-state rivals. Iowa State now holds a slight edge, 30-29, as the home team has won each of the last six games.

Feit’s DebutFreshman Abby Feit made quite the impression in her first week of collegiate action. Against Brescia on Tuesday, Feit opened with 26 points and 18 rebounds, recording the highest scoring freshman debut in pro-gram history. On the road at SEMO on Sunday, Feit again reached double-figures scoring 16 points and pulling down six rebounds. Feit’s debut earned her MVC Newcomer of the Week honors, the first Ace to do so since Kayla Casteel earned the honor in 2017-18.

Season Opening VictoryThe Aces opened the season with a 77-61 win over Brescia on Tuesday inside the Ford Center. The win marked the second season-opener win in the past three seasons after defeating Murray State, 89-81, on Nov. 12, 2017.

Three Point Attempt RecordEvansville attempted 40 three-pointers in the Aces’ season-opening win over Brescia on Tuesday. The 40 three-point attempts by Evansville tied the program record for most three-point attempts in a game, originally set against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 16, 2015) and sits tied for fourth in MVC history in single game three-point attempts.

It Starts With DefenseThe Sycamores made things difficult for Kansas in their season debut on Thursday, forcing the Jayhawks into 17 turnovers and coming up with 13 steals. They followed that performance with 10 steals at EIU while also forc-ing the Panthers into 12 turnovers. Freshman Sommer Pitzer is averaging three steals a game, currently tied for first in the Valley.

A Balanced AttackDuring the first week of play, Indiana State used a balanced scoring attack on the offensive side of the ball. Against Kansas, every Sycamore who touched the floor scored and five Trees scored seven or more points, led by Marie Hunter with 18. Then at Eastern Illinois, six Sycamores scored five or more points and Sommer Pitzer finished with 13.

Making AdjustmentsJunior LeAndra Echi has made the adjustment from JUCO to Division I look easy in her first two games as a Sycamore. The standout transfer has managed to slice through defenses, recording 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes of action at Kansas. The following Sunday, Echi earned her first double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Eastern Illinois to lead the blue and white to their first win of the season.

Party Like It’s 2011Loyola picked up a pair of victories to open the 2019-20 campaign, cruising past Detroit Mercy, 89-60, last Tues-day at Calihan Hall before pulling out a thrilling 78-76 win over Vermont in Rogers Park just three days later. The Ramblers currently find themselves off to their best start to a season since going 3-0 to begin the 2011-12 campaign.

Sophomores ShineTwo members of Loyola’s sophomore class played pivotal roles in helping the Maroon & Gold to its pair of aforementioned victories last week. On Tuesday against Detroit Mercy, Janae Gonzales knocked down a program-record tying nine three-point field goals, the fourth most in a game in Valley annals, as part of a 29-point performance. Allison Day provided the late heroics in Friday’s nailbiter with Vermont, capping off a career-best 19-point performance with the game-winning bucket with only 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation.

Racking Up MilesA Wednesday matinee at Eastern Illinois opens up a season-long four-game road trip for Loyola. The swing, which also features stops at Chicago State, Kansas City, and Portland, will see the Ramblers travel 5,736 round trip miles before they return to Gentile Arena on December 4 to host Dartmouth. In 2018-19, Loyola finished 4-10 (.286) in road contests.

Road Streak SurvivesThe Lady Bears extended their school-record road win-ning streak to 12 games last week with two wins away from home. After running the table in Valley road games last year, MSU has picked up wins at No.13 Iowa State, 23rd-ranked Minnesota and Boise State to tie Princeton for the nation’s longest active road win streak. Both MSU and Princeton have road contests this week.

Free Throw Record FallsMissouri State was perfect at the foul line in the season opener at Min-nesota, going 17-for-17 to set a single-game school record. The old mark was a 16-for-16 performance in 2001, and the Lady Bears went on to make their first 20 free throw attempts of the year.

More Ranked W’sThe Lady Bears opened the year with a victory at No. 23 Minnesota for their fourth win in a stretch of five consecutive games against top 25 competition. After beating an unranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi squad on Friday, MSU took down another team getting national recognition Sunday, earning a road win over a Boise State club that was receiving votes in both major polls.

Making FreebiesThe Salukis made 87.0% (20-for-23) of their free throws in the win over the Cougars on Nov. 8. Its the best the Salukis have shot from the charity stripe since March 6, 2019 when Southern made 88.5% (23-of-26) of its attempts against UNI. Prior to that, it had been since Nov. 25, 2005 that Southern shot that well from the free throw line (mini. 20 attempts).

Fast StartMakenize Silvey notched her sixth career 20-plus point performance in the win over SIUE, as she scored 28 points on the strength of 6-of-9 (.667) shooting from behind the arc. Two of Silvey’s six 20-point games have come on opening nights. Last season against UT Martin, Silvey poured in a career-high 29 points with six treys. The junior guard nearly double her career scoring average (12.6) on opening nights in her career, as she is averaging 24.0 points per game in three season openers. The Edwardsville, Ill. product is 17 points shy of 800 for her career. In doing so, she will become the 35th Saluki to score 800-plus points in a career.

Easing Into the SeasonValpo was the last MVC basketball team, men’s or women’s, to open the season when it tipped off Sunday against Ohio State, six days into the campaign. In all, Valpo will play just once in the season’s first 10 days and just three times over the first 16 days.

Making DebutsValpo had four players appear for the first time in its brown road uniforms on Sunday afternoon. Carie Weinman earned the start in her first game at Valpo after transferring from Denver, while fellow Denver transfer Grace White finished with seven points and five rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. FAU graduate transfer Alexis Cowan stepped on a basketball court competitively for the first time since Feb. 25, 2018 in the fourth quarter Sunday, while freshman Cara VanKempen made her Valpo debut in the second half.

All Healed UpJuniors Caitlin Morrison and Marlee Profitt both returned to the court for Valpo in the season opener after each missed the entirety of the 2018-19 season due to injury. Morrison started and finished with three points, three rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes, while Profitt picked up a rebound in seven minutes of action.
