Sentence:
This child will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Luke 1: 32-33
Collect:
God of all hope and joy, open our hearts in welcome, that your Son Jesus Christ at his coming may find in us a dwelling prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Micah 5: 2-5a
2But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. 3Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. 4And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; 5and he shall be the one of peace. If the Assyrians come into our land and tread up-on our soil, we will raise against them sev-en shepherds and eight installed as rulers.
Psalm 80: 1-7
1 Hear O Shepherd of Israel, you that led
Joseph like a flock: shine forth from your throne upon the cherubim. 2 Before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh: stir up your strength and come to our rescue. 3 Restore us again O God: show us the light of your face and we shall be saved. 4 O Lord God of hosts: how long will you set your face against your people's prayer? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears: and given them tears in plenty to drink. 6 You make a mockery of us to our neigh bours: and our enemies laugh us to scorn. 7 Restore us again O God of hosts: show us the light of your face and we shall be saved.
Hebrews 10: 5-10
5Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; 6in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7Then I said, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will, O God’ (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).” 8When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offer-ings” (these are offered according to the law), 9then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in or-der to establish the second. 10And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Today’s Readings … from the New Revised Standard Version Bible

Luke 1: 39-55
39In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40where she entered the house of Zechari-ah and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”
46And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48 for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

The Reverend Ron Sinclair
It is with sadness we report that the Rev-erend Ron Sinclair died peacefully at his residence on Thursday. He was 85 years of age.
Ron was originally a school teacher, eventually taking over the family dairy farm at Te Rehunga, Dannevirke. He was very involved as a lay reader at St Al-ban’s, Te Rehunga, then was ordained by Bishop Paul Reeves as a Non-stipendiary Priest in 1975. He left the farm to be-come Vicar of Porangahau from 1979-1983. He was appointed Vicar of St Chad’s, West New Plymouth in 1983 and served as an industrial chaplain to the Fire Service. He returned to Hawke’s Bay in 1987 to become Vicar of Mahora, re-tiring in 1994. Meanwhile his ministry continued with an industrial chaplaincy role to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and later as chaplain to the Hastings RSA. He and Mary retired to their own home in Frimley and later moved to Gracelands Rest Home.
Ron is remembered affectionately as a people person, with a wide circle of friends, and a ready and encouraging smile. His ministries in the parishes he served in are characterised by his warmth and humour and dedicated faith.
His funeral was held yesterday at Crest-wood Funeral Home, 515 Heretaunga Street East, Hastings. Please remember to pray for Mary and family at this time.

A loved member of the parish, Joan
Rogers, left Napier last week for Rest
home care near her daughter Sarah
in Gisborne. With her late husband
Sid, Joan had a long association as a
worshipper at the Cathedral parish,
always proud of her St Michael's
Christchurch upbringing. She read les-
sons at 10 am services for many years,
and enjoyed welcoming weekday vis-
itors to the Cathedral. Over the years
she ran English lessons for new mi-
grants through the Ecumenical Family
Centre. Until recently she cared for
our parish Archives. Joan is also well
remembered as an English teacher at
Napier Girls' High and was an active
in the Federation of Graduate Wom-
en for many years.
Joan, and Sarah, have given permis-
sion for Joan’s new contact details to
be printed and encourage Cathedral
parishioners to write to her at:
Leighton House,
PO Box 803, Gisborne;
or to pop in and visit …
2 Cheeseman Road, Inner Kaiti.

Gift
Appeal
The annual Christmas Appeal was launched
by New Zealand churches to help rebuild
Greece after World War II. Seventy years lat-
er, our church is supporting this appeal
launched by our aid and development agency,
Christian World Service. Your gift will mean
more families get the help they need to sur-
vive war, recover after disaster and escape
poverty. CWS works with local partners to
make sure people get the food, water, support
and medicine they need.
Please give generously to the 2015 Christmas
Appeal so more people can rebuild. You can
read more about the work or give now at

Advent Four - Vanuatu
At 18 Allick is hard at work replanting the
family garden after Cyclone Pam on Tongoa
Island in Vanuatu. He knows how important
it is to get the new
seeds in the ground to
feed everybody.
Allick is collecting
materials to build a
new home strong
enough to withstand
future cyclones and
collect the rain water
they need to survive.
Preparing for disasters
is now central to the
work of ACT Alliance, Action by Churches
Together. CWS is making sure partners are
prepared. Your gifts after disasters and con-
flict make sure communities get the food, wa-
ter and medical care they need.

Papers are taught in residential weekends, with the possibility of some tutorial times. Enrolments for the first semester 2016 must be received by St John’s College by Wednesday 10th February 2016.
Full details of the papers being offered in 2016, plus dates for residential week-ends, from Rev’d Deborah Broome, email [email protected] ; or check out St John’s College web-site: http://www.stjohnscollege.ac.nz/anglican-studies/
THANKS … to the generosity of Pan Pac, (Jo Hart,
Peter Reid, and the forestry team) for
this year’s beautiful Christmas tree;
… and to the team of Cathedral parish-
ioners and staff for decorating it.
THANKS
At its last meeting Vestry received no-
tice from Helen Blow of her intention to
resign from her position of voluntary Of-
fice staff, effective from Christmas
time. Helen has “held the fort” on Mon-
days in the Office for the past 4-5 years,
relieving so our Priest-Administrator, the
Rev’d Margaret Thompson, could take a
‘clergy’ day off. Helen’s assistance has
been very much appreciated, not only by
Margaret, but also by the Dean (and the
former Dean), the Wardens and parish-
ioners. So thanks for your all you have
done, Helen, for your time so generously
given, and particularly for your skills in
keeping track of car-park tenants pay-
ments!
We wish you many happy days enjoying
‘Nana-time’ with your young grandson!

LENTEN STUDY (YES, LENT!)
Next year the Lenten season commences very
early with Ash Wednesday falling on the
10th February 2016.
We have ordered some copies of the study
booklet prepared by Theology House in
Christchurch, and Bishop Murray Mills has
offered to facilitate a group again in 2016.
The title is Stewardship: Through Lent with Mark, and the authors are Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley (Waikato) and the Rev’d Peter Carrell
(Director of Education, Theology House).
This is the fourth in the series, but a ‘stand-
alone’ study (ie you don’t need to have com-
pleted the previous three to participate in next
year’s study!)
The 2016 studies maintain the high readability,
biblical depth and practical application of pre-
vious years, and this time include additional
discussion questions, to give leaders more
scope and options. On the Theology House
website www.theologyhouse.nz there is a click-
through to a sample study, if you would like to
look at that.
The Waiapu Synod of 2014 agreed for a change in our Financial Year from April-March to the calendar year,
1st January-31st December. As a consequence, in this coming year
the dates for all Annual General Meetings of Parishes in the Diocese will
also have to be changed, and are required to be completed between mid-February and the end of March
2016.
At its last meeting, the Vestry set the date for the Cathedral Parish’s AGM -
Sunday 13th March 2016. During this AGM, Vestry are planning for
an opportunity for discussion on the options prepared by the
‘Re-pitching the Tent’ group.
Also at its last meeting, Vestry members received with regret the resignation of
Kendall Julian who has served on Vestry for one term.
Thanks for your thoughtful contributions, Kendall, and go with our good wishes as
you explore your future options.
The Cathedral Parish Office will be CLOSED on Thursday 24 December 2015
re-opening Tuesday 12 January 2016. The email and answerphone will be
checked regularly to clear any messages;
please contact Dean Michael Godfrey on his mobile 022 342 9977.
The Waiapu Diocesan Centre Offices will also be CLOSED from
Thursday 24 December 2015, re-opening on Monday 11 January 2016.
