    A Note from the Editor

Last weekends recce for the Presidential was very positive.

We believe we have enough trail at this point of time to keep

you breathless throughout the ride!! And of course, its not

over yet...we are going again this weekend!! So block out 14

June 2009....the Presidential is BACK !!

For this weekend, the usual suspects from the M+D will be

doing this years first Ride + Camp. Therefore a reminder to

you all to meet at the RV Point (Petronas inside KarakHighway, 18km after the Genting Sempah R&R) at 8am, rain

    or shine.

Interesting write up from a roadie last weekend of Kampung

    Kuantan...written by Kuan...Tan?? Anyways....the boys and

girls are tearing up the roads with their distance as IS 09

    looms ahead. Train hard !!

Ed....(Thinking if that 60 degree slope going for 3kms is a

good idea as part of the Presidential loop....)

    14 JUNE 2009

    The Presidential isback....

Its time to finalise the pledges for trees and

collect the money for the Hutan Kita re-forestation

    project in Bukit Kiara.

TRAKS are heading this drive for the cycling

community and Ying How has been doing a

sterling effort in driving this forward. They have

secured a 500 tree plot way up twin peaks worth

    RM30,000.

Under the TRAKS banner, together the various

clubs and cyclists we have so far raised

RM21,000!! So currently we are 9k short of the

    30,000.

PCC has yet to finalise its combines pledges, so

please send a mail to me at [email protected]

giving your number of pledged trees.

You can pass cash directly to me, or deposit to a

    bank account. e-mail for details.

1 tree is RM 60 which covers the cost of the

    sapling, planting and maintenance until

    established.

Self Support Ride + Camp by The Yellow Manta

Time for our first sleepover of the year! Whenever we go to Telemung, we find the downhill blast out irresistible! Yet

another PCC adventure not to be missed!

We are going back to the same campsite like previously, not too far from the original horse-shoe camp. Beside a nice

pool fed by an equally nice waterfall and a sandy beach that you can actually sleep on if it doesnt rain. Perfect setting fora weekend camp not to mention another great ride!

Date: 21 March 2009 22 March 2009 (Saturday to Sunday)

Game Plan: Plans to meet up Saturday at the big Petronas station inside the Karak Highway (East bound)

where you can stock up on munchies, water and toilet paper. The Petronas station is located

inside the Karak Highway 18kmafter the Genting Sampah tunnel and R&R. From here, we will

convoy along the Karak Highway and come off at Telemung. The convoy will continue to Chow

Kai Peng Enterprise, a private yard for harvested oil palm fruits. We will go seek permission to

park our cars inside here and have the caretaker to keep an eye on the cars over night for a

reasonable fee (for which you will be billed).

From here we ride 2.5km to the trail head. The trail is 13km of gravel and ex-logging/4x4 track.

Its quite open for the majority so expect to get hot and sweaty but thats why there is a great

waterfall and pool at the end! Its generally flat initially until the ex-logging trail starts, then its

an undulating climb for 8km with a couple of fairly steep sections that will be tough with a big

back-pack. The remainder is downhill to the campsite. There are other trails and waterfalls to go

exploring on the bike if you feel up to it once camp is set up.

    Participation

Fresh air and sunshine is free. Come for the ride/camp and camaradrie. Just pack your own stuff and meet up at Petronas

on the appointed date and time. Do call Pete on 012 227 4443 or James Yap on 012 3158 204 in advance to let us knowyoure coming or if you need more info.

    Afternoon Run

For those of you who cant get leave on Sat, you can opt to join Danny Fam going in the afternoon. Please call him for the necessary

arrangement Danny on 013 330 3325. But dont come too late. Or you find yourself caught in darkness or rain. Or miss out on the

choices spot to pitch your tent...

    Packing Tips

As with every self-supported ride-n-camp, you are

responsible for bringing your own tent and food, thus it

makes sense to drag a buddy or two along to share the load ifnot the ride. Trick is in the packing and you can lighten the

load considerably by pooling common equipment like mini

stoves and tents. Bring light and ready-cooked food. Forget

sleeping bags as they are pretty bulky. A sarong will do and is

more versatile. Really, its not as difficult as it seems to ride

with a load! Take our word for it, PCC has done it umpteen

times. Do it once and youll come asking for more!

    The Telemung Check List

    - Tent (flysheet is a lot lighter and you can share tie round your top tube)- Light-weight waterproof ground sheet

    - Sufficient food for dinner and supper (day 1) and breakfast (day 2) and lotsa coffee (& whiskey?)!

    - Water filter (if dont have, never mind, can share)

    - Mini stove (best the light & flimsy foldable type and burning element) & light utensils

    - Small parang (light-weight type)

    - Change of clothes to sleep in (waterproof it!), towel and toiletries

    - Raincoat/windbreaker (can get pretty chilly)

    - Torchlight/lighter

    - Usual cycling gear (wear the same set of smelly jersey and shorts the next day out)

    - Keep another set of clothing in your car for after the camp-n-ride

Tar + Grime by The Don

    Bentong Here We Come

After last weeks scorching ride, we are headed to cooler

grounds while keeping the distance high. The climbs up

Genting Sempah will provide a good training ground for days

    1 and 2 of IS09. A nice aerobic ride or a lung-busting ride will

be entirely up to you. This is a self-supported ride, so please

bring along your spare tubes, inflation device, hydration salts,

2 water bottles, mobile phone & some cash.

    Date: 22 March 2009

Time: 7:15am (please be ready by 7am)

Start/End: AWE Sup Power food court (in front of Sekolah Menengah Teknik Gombak, Jln Sg. Pusu, Off Jln

    Gombak

Route Details: We start at AWE and make our way towards Genting Sempah via Jalan Gombak. Rolling roads

greet us as we make our way up. We shall regroup at the cross junction in front of the workshop

at 23km. Careful of lorries plying this route, especially in switchbacks. They will take the whole

road when they corner. Road condition is generally good but be aware of sandy spots at

switchbacks. Cool fresh air is standard. We will have our refuel & second re-group point at the

    Shell station in Bentong.

    Option A: AWE-workshop junction-AWE (46m)

    Option B: AWE-Shell station- AWE: (110km)

    How to get there:

Head to Jalan Gombak as usual (if coming from Kepong, exit the MRR flyover after Batu Caves temple & go straight along

Jln Batu Caves. Do not follow the flyover to Karak Hwy). Reset your car distance meter when you turn left at the mosque

on Jln Gombak. Drive 2.2km until u see a traffic light & take a right turn into Jln Sg Pusu. At 3.1km you see Sekolah

Menengah Teknik Gombak on your right. U-turn and youre there!

Park at AWE Sup Power food court, just next to the entrance of the school. There are ample parking space & hot food to

fill our bellies when we finish our ride. Your Ride Leader is Don and you can contact him at 017-883 0538 if you have any

    queries. See you all Sunday!

    NO RIDE

    Make Friends la..

Reportedly 60 riders joined in this Sunday. (Triathletes, Jelutong boys

and lots of others training for the IS2009 came from far and wide.)

Such a large group scared me a little, being a beginner but its a positive

    notch for new experiences.

I meet the nicest people on PCC rides! Not only did I catch a few flies

with my benefactor from a previous Sunday, Abang Rahim, I was

reacquainted with an ex-colleague I havent seen for years (looking

    good Sham).

Throw in a few bike related conversations and the ride experience was

    complete.

    Go back & Sleep

It was all I could think of on the slow drive back home. The Kampung

Kuantan ride gave me a newfound appreciation for my bed. Hope it

was the same for the rest of you.

A NEWBIE POINT-OF-VIEW Kampung Kuantan by Kuan Tan(??)

    Since I joined the rides in January, I have beengratefully accepting all manner of assistance from total strangers;

urging me on to finish, buying me drinks, pacing me when I looked

ready to collapse etc. This Sunday, I was asked to do my turn to

contribute to this column. Heres my experience under the checklist of

advice given by one Mr. Terry Tan as to how to enjoy the Kampung

    Kuantan ride:

Ride Distance is ONLY a number

The jaunt is apparently 120km but like previous T&G rides led by PK, my

computer is always registering 10% -15% more! I had to avoid lookingat the mileage counter to avoid talking myself out of completing the

ride. PK did a good job of shouting safety instructions & directions, but

I seriously doubt his computer is SIRIM approved.

Force yourself to Eat & Drink Constantly

And dont lack in ride preparation! I left my energy bars at home so I

relied on some snicker bars instead. Not good. In so doing, I was

depleted for the hot journey back from Ijok. Onset of cramps further

saw to it that I crawled back to the start point from the Guthrie C. By

the time my body started protesting, it was already too late. Torture!

    Enjoy the countryside views

The ride towards Ijok threw us some enjoyable rolling roads and achance to enjoy the big chainring. So it all went by a little faster than I

am accustomed. In between my efforts to turn the rings and fighting

self doubt, I must admit I enjoyed very little of the scenery. My eyes

were on full alert only because some impatient drivers caused a few

anxious moments for the ride. My heart skipped a few beats but I did

my best to follow the more experienced riders to avert mishap. Phew!
