Ryman Premier

THEY made hard work of it, but Lowestoft eventually got the win they needed to clinch the Ryman Premier runners-up spot on Saturday with a 1-0 home win over nine-man Hendon.

The Trawlerboys started impressively, hitting the woodwork twice and having a shot cleared off the l ine before Hendon heaped problems on themselves with the dismissals of Kevin Maclaren in the 16

th minute and James

Fisher seven minutes later.

A superb display by keeper Berkley Laurencin then kept Lowestoft frustrated until the 65th minute, when Michael

Frew’s close-range header settled the match and gave the Suffolk side home advantage in the play-offs, starting with a semi-final against East Thurrock on Wednesday.

Richard Jolly ended his league career on a high with two goals as Wealdstone beat Canvey 2-0 to finish in third

place, a point behind Lowestoft.

The prolific striker has announced that this will be his final season and he bowed out with typical poacher’s goals in the 50

th and 69

th minutes to book a home semi-final.

Stones will host Concord, who had a chance of finishing second themselves if the sides above them had slipped up but had to settle for fourth place after a 0-0 home draw with Leiston, who cleared a Ben Greenhalgh shot off

the line late in an uneventful affair.

East Thurrock clinched fifth place on Thursday, barring some sensational goalscoring, but their 16-match unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 defeat at champions Whitehawk.

Hawks had to wait until the 88th

minute before Charlie Henry found the net after combining with James Fraser and they finished eight points clear of the field in their first – and, for the moment at least, last - season at this level.

A hectic week caught up with East Thurrock defender Tom Stephen, who played full games on Tuesday and Thursday after completing last Sunday’s London marathon! He suffered an injury in the warm-up and had to drop out of the side.

At the other end of the table, Carshalton made it five wins out of six in April with a 2-1 victory at Enfield Town.

But their valiant effort to avoid the drop was in vain.

Enfield took a ninth-minute lead with a penalty by Liam Hope, who was denied a second goal by the crossbar. Nathaniel Pinney equalised on the hour and hit the winner with six minutes left, his 22

nd goal of the season. It

was too little and too late.

The Robins went into the game three points and seven goals behind Lewes, so although the Sussex side went down 3-2 at home to Bury they retained their place in the top division.

Two goals in five minutes around the half-hour mark, a fine strike by Evan Key and a Craig Parker penalty, raised Carshalton’s hopes. But Steve Brinkhurst pulled one back seven minutes after the break and when Callum Dunne levelled the scores in the 77

th minute Lewes were all but safe.

They were beaten in the third minute of injury time when John Sands picked up a long clearance and raced through to claim his 27

th goal of the season. Appropriately enough, then, it was the golden boot winner who

scored the division’s final goal of the season.

It might not have been, because the match at Margate kicked off an hour late after Harrow ran into trouble on

the M25. But the bar denied Margate’s Tommy Whitnell and George Purcell in the second half and it finished scoreless.

There was a great deal more excitement at Wingate, where Cray were the visitors. Perhaps demob happy after

both escaped relegation in midweek, they slugged out a 4-4 draw.

Spencer Bellotti’s early strike for Wingate was answered by Sam Long’s long-range effort, only for an Anthony Thomas double to put the hosts 3-1 up before the half-hour. Michael Power headed Cray’s second in the 58

th

minute but Bellotti restored the two-goal margin with 20 minutes to go.

Leigh Bremner reduced the arrears again in the 77th

minute with his 20th goal of the season and he grabbed a

point at the death with a superbly-taken 21st.

Met Police finished an excellent season with a 4-0 romp at Thurrock – but they would have needed to score

another 11 to push East Thurrock out of a play-off place.

Charlie Collins gave them a halftime lead and Dave Knight netted two goals soon after the interval against his former club, with Allan Tait adding a late fourth.

Joe Turner’s shot went in off the bar in the 64th

minute to give Hampton a 1-0 home win over Bognor and the scoreline was the same at Hastings, where Alassane N’Diaye netted after half an hour to see off Kingstonian.

But Hastings, whose relegation was confirmed two days earlier, still finished at the foot of the table – a sad end to a season in which they marched to the third round of the FA Cup. Two more points would have saved them and they will reflect ruefully on ten home draws, including eight in succession.

Ryman North FULL marks to Waltham Abbey, who ended a hectic week with a stunning 5-3 victory at Ryman North champions Grays on Saturday, ending their hosts’ record-breaking 18-match winning run.

Thanks to a fixture backlog, the Abbots had already played on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, winning twice, and they took the lead at Grays on the half-hour when James Peagram notched his 20

th league goal.

Dean Green made it 2-0 before half-time and struck again 12 minutes after the interval. Then, it seemed, the visitors finally ran out of steam. Joao Carlos opened Grays’ account in the 72nd minute and within eight minutes it was 3-3 as Danny Bunce and Junior Baker found the net.

It looked as if Grays would go on to complete the comeback and chalk up their 19th

win, but the Abbotts dug deep and Green completed his hat-trick in the 85

th minute before Joe Pearman rounded it off.

Grays had to be content with 102 points, 13 more than anyone else in the league, and a 13-point winning margin after they had been 16 points behind Maldon in December.

Runners-up Maldon finished with a 2-2 draw at Wroxham. They trailed to goals by Ross Durrant and Ben

Thompson at half-time but gave themselves a chance with a header by Ollie Berquez ten minutes after the break, their 100

th league goal. It was Berquez who made the most of a defensive error to equalise in the 85

th minute and

at that stage Maldon were the league’s top scorers.

Third-placed Thamesmead go into the play-offs in good form after a 4-0 victory at Harlow. Richard Stevens

netted a hat-trick with goals in the 27th

, 44th

and 66th

minutes, and an own goal completed the scoring before Harlow had Kevin Toonga sent off and then missed a penalty.

Witham will visit Thamesmead in Tuesday’s semi-final after holding on to fourth place with a 2-2 draw at Potters Bar. The Scholars took the lead in each half through Chris Doyle and James Gershfield, but Witham replied

through Brad Stopher and, with 13 minutes left, James Stevens.

It was almost Aveley who had a short trip across the river to Thamesmead. They led 3-2 at Soham going into

added time and that would have given them fourth place. But Buster Harradine converted his second penalty of the afternoon in the 91

st minute and Millers finish fifth, thus going to Maldon on Tuesday.

Alex Read put Millers ahead after 14 minutes but Robbie Mason’s header, his 27th league goal, squared it on the

half-hour and Harradine’s first penalty gave Soham the lead just before the break. Read replied in the 57th

minute, taking his league tally to 25, and Sheldon Sellears put Aveley in front with 20 minutes to go, only for Harradine to foil them with his 20

th of the season.

The other issue to be decided was at the bottom, where Ilford needed to win at Tilbury and overcome a nine-

goal deficit to avoid relegation and send Redbridge down.

Redbridge have suffered some heavy home defeats this season but their recent form has been much improved and they ensured survival by seeing off visiting Sudbury with a lone goal by Nana Asamoah midway through the

second half. They climbed above Harlow to finish 20th

.

Ilford took the lead eight minutes before half-time through Chinedu McKenzie. Tilbury drew level with a penalty by Aaron Waters after a foul on Rimmel Daniel in the 71

st minute but McKenzie immediately restored Ilford’s lead.

Aaron Matthews made it 2-2 with eight minutes left and Ilford’s stay in the league ended on a suitably low note when Waters scored direct from a last-minute corner to give Dockers a 3-2 victory.

Heybridge have had a bitterly disappointing end to the season after looking certain play-off qualifiers for most of

it. And it looked as if it would finish badly as second-half goals from Spencer Knight and Jordan Gill left them trailing 2-0 at home to Ware.

They had even lost their position as the league’s top scorers to local rivals Maldon. But they salvaged that consolation honour, and a 2-2 draw, with goals in the last three minutes from Reece Morgan and Ben Newson which took their tally to 102.

Page 4: Weekly News & Match Bulletin Season 2012/13 No.39 29th ... · Wealdstone striker Richard Jolly, who is retiring, scores the last league goal of a prolific career, his second in his

Swifts also have the division’s golden boot winner, and the league’s overall top scorer, in 33-goal Luke Callander. Newson’s goal was his 20

th in the league and, with Michael Cheek on 21, they are the only club boasting three

20-goal men - none of which will be much compensation for finishing sixth, five points away from a play-off spot.

Romford did well to claim eighth place on a limited budget, making sure with a 3-1 victory at Brentwood. Nick

Reynolds put them ahead in the 58th minute and Kurt Smith made it 2-0 with seven minutes of normal time left.

Connor Hogan pulled one back in the 90th

minute but Ben Jones secured the points well into added time.

Needham Market finished the season with only four home wins, which came in successive home games during February and March, after a 2-2 draw with Cheshunt. Victor Igo and Corey Whitely put the visitors 2-0 up before

Kieron Leabon pulled one back just before half-time. Sam Newson equalised in the 72nd

minute.

There were no goals at Waltham Forest, where Chatham’s Austin Gacheru came closest to breaking the

deadlock with an early effort that hit the bar.

Ryman South

IT WAS a nailbiting Saturday afternoon at Champion Hill – but Dulwich had the X-factor in Xavier Vidal, whose

goal earned them the point they needed to clinch the Ryman South title.

Dulwich have been the nearly men in the last three seasons when they have twice been beaten play-off finalists and twice runners-up in the League Cup.

And it looked as if they might be condemned to the play-offs again when, after Huddersfield-bound Danny Carr had twice gone close in his final game for Hamlet, visiting Burgess Hill pinched a 29

th-minute lead through Nick

Wheeler.

It was almost halfway through the second half before Vidal hammered in the equaliser from 18 yards and Dulwich, watched by a crowd of 1,137, never looked likely to lose their grip on the championship trophy after that.

So the league’s longest-serving club – they have had unbroken membership since 1907 – return to the Premier for the first time since 2001 and Maidstone, their close rivals all season, will have to settle for the play-offs.

Stones attracted their, and the league’s, highest gate of the season, with 2,305 turning up at the Gallagher Stadium to see if they could snatch the title at the last gasp. They did all they could, beating Horsham 3-0, but

finished a point adrift. Stuart King’s penalty put them ahead after 33 minutes and Ade Olorunda made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute. The game had kicked off 15 minutes late because of Horsham’s travelling difficulties, so by the time Paul Booth netted the third with four minutes left Maidstone knew the title was not to come their way.

Instead, Stones will entertain Folkestone in the play-off semi-finals on Tuesday after another goal from teenager Johan Ter Horst earned them a 1-0 home win over Herne Bay while Leatherhead, who started the day in fifth place, went down to a lone Dave Botterill goal for visiting Faversham.

Ter Horst has netted some valuable goals since winning a place in the Folkestone squad, but none more vital than his seventh, two minutes after half-time, which earned the play-off spot. He later hit the bar.

A draw would not have been enough for Leatherhead and Tommy Hutchings twice went close to giving them the lead before Botterill’s 81

st-minute strike ended their hopes. It was their tenth home defeat, hardly the stuff of

promotion contenders although they won 14 times on the road.

It also lifted Faversham to third place and gave them home advantage in their semi-final against Hythe, who slipped below them when they could only draw 2-2 at Walton & Hersham.

Whether playing at home is actually an advantage remains to be seen: Faversham have won 14 games on foreign territory but only eight on their own turf, while Hythe have nine home wins to set against 13 away victories.

All the goals at Stompond Lane came in the second half, with Walton twice taking the lead through Tony Reid and Will Turl. Michael Yianni netted the first equaliser and Dave Cook saved a point with four minutes to go as a hailstorm peppered the ground. It was Cook’s 27

th league goal and, subject to official confirmation, gives him the

division’s golden boot, pipping Sittingbourne’s Ryan Golding who failed to add to his total of 26.

Golding’s side went down 1-0 at home to Ramsgate, who had an outside chance of making the play-offs

themselves if both the teams above them had slipped up. They would, however, have needed to add seven more goals to the one netted by Ian Pulman on the stroke of half-time which spoiled the last match of Sittingbourne’s stay at Bourne Park. They move to a new ground next season.

Relegation for Walton Casuals was as certain as anything can be in football. They went into their last game at Merstham needing to make up three points and 15 goals on Three Bridges.

Mind you, if Casuals wanted evidence that the improbable can happen, they only had to look back to their home match against Merstham in November when they managed only a single point after leading 6-1 with less than half an hour to go. There was to be no repeat of that goal feast, nor of any unlikely event. Justin Hemmings

Page 5: Weekly News & Match Bulletin Season 2012/13 No.39 29th ... · Wealdstone striker Richard Jolly, who is retiring, scores the last league goal of a prolific career, his second in his

headed home a Greg Andrews cross in the 57th

minute to condemn Casuals to a 1-0 defeat and end their eight-year stay in the league.

Three Bridges were beaten but never in danger of the massacre that could have endangered them. It was the 63

rd minute before they fell behind to Micheal Everitt’s goal at Whitstable. Joel O’Hara replied with four minutes

left but the Oystermen immediately won a penalty which James Everitt converted to give them a 2-1 win.

Tooting’s poor season ended on a high with a 4-0 victory at Crawley Down. The Anvils, who finish 13th

after

being play-off contenders most of the way, had to field four youth-team players.

They also had to employ goalkeeping coach Rob Frankland, who must have been somewhat embarrassed to be beaten three times in the first 16 minutes with two goals from Anthony Joseph sandwiching one by Sol Pinnock. After that Frankland kept the Terrors at bay until the last minute, when Carl Wilson-Denis made it four.

Corinthian-Casuals and Chipstead produced a lively 1-1 draw. Bashiru Alimi gave Casuals an early lead which

they held until the 77th

minute, when Simon Mensah replied.

Worthing had a first half to forget as they crashed 3-0 at home to Eastbourne. Steve Metcalf’s own goal gave

the visitors the lead after three minutes, Dan Smith made it 2-0 in the 25th

minute and Rebels had Paul Kennett sent off before another own goal, this one from Sid Adams, completed the scoring before the interval.
