At Larson we are all learners. Students, staff and families are collectively responsible for creating, contributing and sustaining conditions that promote growth, safety and belonging for all Larson Learning at Home and at School June 22-25, 2020 Weekly Intention / Core Competency Focus: Song of the Week: Give a Little Bit (Supertramp) This week’s song was actually the morning music song just last Friday! However, we decided that the message of this tune is just too good and too powerful to be played only once... we just had to use it as our representative song for a whole week!! This week’s song is written by a musician named Roger Hodgson and is performed here by the great rock group called Supertramp. It was a big hit in the 1970’s and it has a great message which is important for today and even for the future. If you listen closely to the lyrics, the song is all about being kind, showing care towards others, sharing your love for others, and having hope for the future! We encourage you to aspire to these lyrics! If everyone did so, Larson school and the world would be a better place!! Have a good listen to this great song called “Give a Little Bit.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9JOut9yh5g Farewells Typically, we would gather as a school community during this last week of school to recognize and celebrate our Grade 7 students for their leadership and contributions to our school community, to reflect on and celebrate what we have learned and shared throughout the school year and to say farewell to students and staff who will be leaving Larson. In lieu of our Farewell Assemblies, we will say good bye to our Grade 7s on

  • Wednesday, June 24 and we will share a Year- end Farewell video with students on Tuesday, June 23 (the last day for Cohort 1) and on Thursday, June 25 (the last day for cohort 2). Grade 7s This final year at elementary school is typically a time of extended opportunities for learning, increased independence, leadership and community service with highly anticipated Grade 7 excursions and social events scheduled for the end of the year. Sadly, these celebratory events were not able to proceed due to COVID 19 and the current restrictions that are in place to protect the health and safety of our community. On behalf of the staff and students, I want to express appreciation for the contributions that our Grade 7 students and families have made to our school community throughout their years at Larson. Grade 7s, we will also miss your smiles, your enthusiasm, your energy and your sense of humour! We wish you success in your next learning adventures and look forward to hearing about your future accomplishments and contributions. Staff This year we will be saying “au revoir” to a number of Larson staff. It can be difficult to say good-bye, especially when someone has been a part of our Larson “family” for a long time, but changes can bring new opportunities and new learning which is important for us all! Mme Nancy Marion will be beginning a new adventure as a Teacher Librarian at Cove Cliff Elementary in September 2020. Ms. Hayley Goodman is expecting an addition to her family and will begin a Maternity leave in September 2020. Mr. David Barnum will be splitting his teaching time between Cleveland Elementary and SFU in the Fall. Mr. Mayert has accepted a teaching position at Braemar and Mrs. Paula Stanley, Ms Heidi Benoit and Ms. Rebecca Peters will be exploring other teaching opportunities in North Vancouver Schools. Mme Antoinette Hess will be leaving School District 44 as she will be moving to Switzerland this summer and a reduction in hours for Education Assistants at Larson means that we will also be saying good bye to Ms. Jenny Jalop and Ms. Mehri Sadeghian. We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked and learned with these teachers and Education Assistants and wish them the very best in their new roles and in in their new locations.

Indigenous Education Land Acknowledgement: Last week, students and teachers at Larson Elementary school explored our practice of Land Acknowledgement. The traditional acknowledgement used in North Vancouver schools includes acknowledgement and thanks to the Coast Salish people whose traditional territory North Vancouver School District resides on. It also includes an acknowledgement and appreciation to both the Squamish and the Tsleil Waututh Nations, and an expression of gratitude for the opportunity to learn, live and share educational experiences on this traditional territory. Along with the

  • acknowledgement being stated, we are learning to include personal connection to our own learning or our own story. Have you asked your child about what the land acknowledgement means to them? We are happy to share some of our student reflections with you here.
