Indian Intellectual Property Officedata shows a TM trend where 12% annual gr owth

    intellectual property.

Yea r 2011 marked maximum number oftrademark filings in Controller General o

Patents, Designs and Tradem ark depart ment , India. If we ta lk about t he Indian

region where m axim um filings were ma de, Chennai r egion got th e top slot. Th e

receiving the maximum number of applicat ions for gett ing patents in th e past t wo

Applications were mainly from sectors like electrical , elect ronics, ph ar maceutica ls

nu mber of applications received for r egistration of t rademarks and su bsequently thei

Such spurt in filings m ay be partially attributed to the r ecent dev elopmen t in wh ich

Foxconn h as had a close working relationship with Apple but ha s also m ade concer ted efforts to broaden its focus so as to be a ble t o

India-based ch emical engineer Chitra Thiyagarajan has earned a patent for a machine (referred to as a pyro-plant) that conv erts w aste

plast ic (except PET bott les) into diesel-like fuel. Chitra has enabled use of wa ste plastic as a source of cheap as well as su staina ble fuel

sour ce with this patented mach ine.

Th iyagarajan has put in 3 years of R&D to dev ise this machine and applied for a pat ent in June 2013. It r ecently got final approval fr om

Indian Patent Office. Authorities had r igorously checked the m achine for ov er 2 m onths and ensured its patentability. Chitra s ment or

Mr.C SM Sundar am is a retired St Xa v iers College professor and her inv ention has also been approved by IIT Professor, S

Pushpavanam. The newly patented pyro-plant has a chamber in which plastic is heated in the absence of oxy gen over chromiu m m icr o

band heaters that raises the temperature inside the chamber to 350-370C. Th e ga s so gen erated enters a different chamber with wat er

coolant s coils on either side and then gets pumped into another compartment half -filled wit h w ater. Th e fuel so form ed floats on th e

surfa ce and can be extracted. The fuel can also be stored. The non-soluble gas has to be quickly u sed. It is a useful altern ativ e to LPG

Py ro-plant is not expensive and t akes just 3 hours to convert 1 kg of plastic into 800ml of diesel. A similar process has been developed in

China bu t this one is mu ch m ore cost effectiv e. A 5 kg u nit costs only INR 75,000 and 2 5 Kg v arian t costs INR 3,00,000.

Al l commercially-available methods of scrubbing GHGs, from emissions use ammonia-derived liquid solu tion of wa ter and amine th at

contacts the stream, removing CO2 or oth er undesirable g ases. Baras patented sy stem w ould not use wat er in th e aqueous amine

solutions. In lieu, it will use imidazoles which are org anic solvents with low vapor pressure or boiling point. This sav es energy sinceth e solv ent can be reg enerated without spending large amount of energy on boiling water. As such, imidazoles give a lot of flex ibilit y in

designing a solvent system to meet the process demands. Besides, this solvent system can captu re th e sam e or m ore a moun t of C O2

th an MEA. All in all, imidazole-containing systems have promising chemical m ake-up for car ry ing out th e pr ocess of CO2 stripping

from n atural gas and post-combustion emissions such as those from coal-fired power plants. Another adv an ta ge of using im idazole is

th at imidazole cores are al ready commercially available, and can even be synthesized in the lab. Thus, cost of ca ptu ring carbon wi ll go
