The partnership will give Farfetch access to JD.com’s marketing platform, social media channels and delivery service. $1 Bil. Alibaba invested $1 billion to increase its ownership stake in Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada from 53% to 83%. Alibaba purchased shares from existing shareholders at an implied valuation for Lazada of $3.15 billion. TheThirdAnnualAmazonPrimeDayIsCominginMid-JulyAswelookforwardtotheFourthofJulyholidayandstarteasingintothedogdaysofsummer,wealsoapproachamajor,ifrecentlyinvented,shoppingevent—AmazonPrimeDay—whichwillcelebrateitsthirdanniversaryonTuesday,July11.Theeventcommemoratesthecompany’sfoundingin1994anditbecameAmazon’sbiggestsalesdayeverlastyear.AlthoughtheofficialPrimeDaydateisJuly11,thesaleswillactuallystartat6:00p.m.,PacificTime,theeveningbeforeandrunforatotalof30hours.

JusthowbigPrimeDayreallyisremainsawell-keptsecret.Lastyear,estimatesoftheday’ssalesrangedashighas$2.5billion(accordingtoInternetRetailer).Amazonreportedthatordersincreasedby60%worldwideandby50%intheUSonPrimeDay.Evenin2015,AmazoncommentedthatitsPrimeDaysalesexceededitsBlackFridaysalesin2014.Still,asmade-upshoppingholidaysgo,PrimeDaypalesincomparisonwithAlibaba’sSingles’Day,whichsaw$17.8billionworthofgrossmerchandisevolumelastyear.JD.comheldashoppingholidayofitsownonJune18thisyear,andannouncedthattotaltransactionvolumetotaled$17.6billionfromJune1throughJune18.

Theshoppingholidayservesseveralpurposes.First,itoffersexclusivedealsforPrimemembers,rewardingthemfortheirmembership.Second,itdrivesPrimemembership,asnonmembersareofferedfreetrialmemberships.AmazonfiguredoutlongagothatPrimemembershipsrepresentavirtuouscircleforthecompany:signingupPrimemembersandprovidingthemwithexclusivebenefitsencouragesthemtorenewtheirmembershipthenextyearandencouragesotherstosignupfortheprogramwhowillthenrenewtheirownmembership.

ItispossiblethatthePrimeprogramisbecomingavictimofitsownsuccess,however.AccordingtoConsumerIntelligenceResearchPartners,therewere80millionPrimemembersintheUSinMarch2017,twiceasmanyastwoyearsearlier.Thosemembersrepresent64%ofUShouseholds,aswasmentionedrecentlyattheInternetRetailerConference+ExhibitioninChicago.ThishighadoptionraisesthequestionofwhethertheUSmarketisbecomingsaturated—anditisnotablethatAmazonrecentlyofferedreducedmembershipfeesforindividualsreceivinggovernmentassistance,whichexpandsitsaddressablemarketandenablesittopickoffsomecustomersfromitschiefrival,Walmart.
