Last Monday night was “International Night” organised and MC’d by PE and International Director Bobby Redman. We had a well attended and very enjoyable social evening and special thanks go to Bobby and our three other presenters who spoke about their country of origin.....Wilf van Emmerik, Suresh Prasad, Jim Sifonios. The international food was good very tasty andour Bobby organised a raffle with a Trivia Questionnaire with an international theme too. Almost all members and guests wore international dress of some kind too, so thank you to everyone who participated in the evening. We will let you know when we can to another social meeting with a different theme. This week our meeting has been shifted from our normal Monday meeting to Wednesday 27

th to attend the Farewell Dinner to our GSE Team of journalists from the UK. The dinner

is at the Castle Hill Country Club hosted by the Castle Hill Club. Currently we have 16 members & partners who will be representing our Club at the dinner. This Friday morning Bobby Redman, Alan Jones and Keith Stapley will be hosting the GSE Team to Tubrook Station to give them a small taste of life in the outback. Demonstrations on whip cracking boomerang throwing and sheep shearing are on the agenda. I’m sure they will have a very informative and interesting morning. Thank you to Bobby, Alan & Keith for looking after them. Friday evening the outgoing GSE Team is holding a Trivia Night at the Sydney Tatts Club. We have table set aside for us and currently we have 5 members and partners attending. We would like to increase the numbers to a full table of 10 if possible to give our support to Claire Thompson and her fellow team members. If you would like to attend please let Bobby Redman know. International Club Night It was wonderful to see all the color and hear the laughter at last week’s Club Meeting when the Members came along to support a special International Night organized to celebrate global awareness and connectivity. There was a fantastic turnout of members dressed in a diverse range International costume (although it was noted that we seem to have an awful lot of Mexican’s in the Club!) Club Members enjoyed a meal whilst listening to the sounds of the Caribbean and seeing a slide show of so many beautiful spots around the

World that, for me, it triggered a strong desire to go out and book another overseas holiday Four of the Club Members spoke about their country / town on origin. The biggest surprise being the diversity and in two cases the members were not even born in the countries that most people thought they were – Jim Sifonios, whom many would have expected to speak about Greece, talked about Egypt, his country of origin and his home for the first 6 years of life. Wilf Van Emmerik expected to speak about Holland, entertained us with his story about Indonesia. Suresh Prasad

speaking about exotic Fiji , provided great insight into his beautiful homeland, and Bobby spoke about her less exotic hometown, Brighton in the South of England, providing history filled with stories of infamy and violence.

Then came the time for everyone to test their International knowledge with a short Trivia Quiz; won by Keith and Lyn Stapely – well done guys. Although this was set up as a fun night rather than a fund-raiser we managed to raise over $100, with the raffle, that will go towards one of the International Projects for which the Club has committed funds this year. There has been great feedback from the night, and everyone appeared to have a good time. We can now look forward to our next big fun night, which will be the Trivia Night coming up in May.

Rotary Foundation Thought for the Week

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is an inspiring quote from Paul Harris that can be assimilated to the challenge to eradicate Polio worldwide: "I like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have just begun. What's 40 years in the life of a great Movement? There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Rotary must simply continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress."

Over 67 years later, Paul Harris' words are just as meaningful. There are still so many things to achieve and promises to keep. If every Rotarian and Club contributes to The Rotary Foundation we can do a power of good in the world by further educating high achievers as Ambassadorial Scholars, by promoting Peace with Rotary World Peace Fellows and cultural Group Study Exchange programs. The Rotary Foundation funds and facilitates humanitarian projects and of course helps immunize the world’s children through the PolioPlus Program. All of these programs help make for a more peaceful world. Remember what Paul Harris said, “We must all strive to be PIONEERS on the long road to PEACE.”

Rotary Clubs Always Pumped for World Water Day By Rotary International Wednesday, Mar. 21, 2012 - 1:21 pm EVANSTON, Ill., March 21, 2012 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Although the United Nations designates March 22 as World Water Day, Rotary members around the globe are focused on the issue 24/7, volunteering their time and resources to provide safe water and sanitation to communities wherever there is need. A centerpiece of Rotary's emphasis on water and sanitation issues is the International H2O Collaboration, an alliance between Rotary International and USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development). Launched in 2009, it works to implement long-term, sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in the developing world. The first phase of the partnership has focused on three countries: Ghana, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic. In 2011, Rotary, through its foundation, established a strategic partnership with UNESCO-IHE, a United Nations institute in The Netherlands that is the world's largest postgraduate water education facility. The Rotary Foundation will provide grants to Rotary clubs and districts to select and sponsor eight students each year for scholarships leading to master's degrees in specified program areas. The Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation has completed its 100th project in Fiji, directly benefiting about 45,500 people at a total cost of US$1.3 million.

In India, the Rotary India Water Conservation Trust (RIWCT) is working with local communities, governments and the private sector to construct dams and build reservoirs and shafts for rainwater harvesting.

In October 2011, the Uganda Rotary Water Plus program was launched. It is designed to help the country achieve its Millennium Development Goal of enabling 77 percent of rural residents to have access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene by 2015.

In Tanzania and Malawi, Rotary clubs are collaborating with Africare "H2O for Life" in a program supported by Procter & Gamble to bring safe water to households and schools in rural areas.

The Rotary club of La Molina Vieja, Peru, supported by The Rotary Foundation is helping local villagers build, install, operate and maintain a bio-sand filter program.

Rotary members are men and women who are business, professional and community leaders with a shared commitment to make the world a better place through humanitarian service. Things you would NOT want to see happen at the ATM - You go to get a balance inquiry, and instead of printing out a receipt the screen says: "Not worth wasting paper", and ejects your card. - You try to get a balance inquiry, and the screen says: "Account not found." and keeps your card. - You insert your card, and try to get some cash, and the ATM laughs and spits out your shredded card. - You withdraw some money to pay some bills, count it, and the screen says: "What, you thought there was some EXTRA there? HA!", and ejects your card clear across the room. - You think you've got $100 in your account and go to take out $50, and the screen says: "Not in this lifetime." and laughs as you bang on the machine, trying desperately to get your card back that the machine has taken. - You go to the ATM, and there's a picture of you a-la-"Most Wanted" staring forlornly at the ATM camera with a caption that reads: "Wanted for trying to get water from a dry well."
