Weekly Bulletin – Monday, September 1, 2014, 2014
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Teachers and Staff,
We had a great turnout last week at our PTSA General
Meeting, Title I and Pre-IB/Science Night. The positive
responses to what was shared was fantastic. Some of the
comments about what parents liked about the meeting were:
The explanation of the new grading scale
The Pre-IB information and expectations for all grade levels
The Remind 101 allowing reminders to be texted to student and
parent
The Science Fair Project (LOTS of positive comments-great job
science team)
The separation of grade levels
The information about Title I and PTSA
The student talking about using the planner.
The positive and enthusiasm of our teachers and staff (Everyone
helps create this environment)
Have a wonderful week. Thank you goes out to all teachers
and staff that communicate high expectations and our Four
Pillars: RISE. Enjoy your three day weekend!
Best regards,
Michelle

Deliberate Practice PD Opportunity
I have heard from a few teachers who would like to participate, but there is still
room for seventeen teachers. Just to recap: Milwee is one of two schools in the
district that have been chosen to participate in a Video Capture Program for the
purpose of Teacher Self-Reflection. This is a great opportunity for teachers to
work with members of their PLC to build their expertise in a specific indicator
Marzano Learning Map. For those of you who would be open to participate,
below are the main aspects of the process.
*Note: This is strictly voluntary. The entire PLC is NOT required to participate. For
example, if only three members of a six member PLC would like to participate,
this is good too!
Each of the PLC members:
Agrees to open up their classrooms for three sessions of videotaping throughout the school year
Will receive one full day to plan a lesson together geared toward specific elements of an indicator
Will receive one full day to review each other’s videotaped teaching sessions and offer specific but helpful feedback to PLC peers (a peer reflection sheet will be provided)
Will receive PD points for their group planning and reflection time
Be trained on the videotaping process and equipment
Communicate with one or more of the coaches throughout the process
This is one way to develop and work on your Deliberate Practice and engage in
the peer coaching process for the benefit of increasing teaching expertise and
student learning.
Please let me know if you are interested by September 9th.
Thank you! Regina McCurdy

A big KUDOS to Mr. Alvarado for coming to our assistance when we need him the
most. Like always he gives 100%.
~Thank you from Mrs. Rivera, Mrs. Mercado, and Mrs. Nowicki
KUDOS: Thanks to Rohan for fixing my U Drive and Shared Drive after the system melt
down on Thursday.

Kudos for Ms. Cotto, she's been doing awesome on her new position. I'm surprised
how fast she receives responds from other schools when requesting our ELLs green folders
and data in order to place our ELLs properly. Kudos for our counselors as well, for working
with us hand-on-hand on schedules for these kids and for all the assistance...supplies, food,
transportation etc. to satisfy their needs. TKU so much! You're Doing Great!!

I would like to thank Susan Sharpe for a wonderful talk she had with my 6th period

NEWS FROM GUIDANCE:
1. Letters for students who qualify for the 21st Century After School Program will be in your mailboxes Tuesday morning. Registrations should be returned to the front office. Our school contact is Stephanie Sully who can be emailed through SCPS. Please try to follow up with the students who receive these envelopes in your 2nd period class Tuesday.
2. Donations: Thank you for all of the recent clothing donations. We are ok right now but can always use backpacks.
3. Food Pantry: Partner this year is Northland Church. We already have 15 students on our Friday backpack program. Please allow these students to leave class a little bit early. We will get a list to those teachers.
4. Schedules: Please do not allow a student to go to another club unless it's been updated in Skyward. This is important due to attendance and locating students.
5. Teacher Locations: Please notify Dolores if your location for a class or club changes for a day. We need to be able to locate students.
6. 8th Grade Teachers: Reminder - students who have been grade advanced should be completing a weekly progress report. Any questions, contact Joanne Gaulding.
7. 504 plans have been distributed to teachers. Please let Susan Sharpe know if you have any questions. All sixth grade plans will be reviewed for middle school. Elementary plans are followed as close as possible until that time.
Have a great week! Thanks for your support! Lillian, Susan, April, Deb

Milwee Coaches' Corner:
Wow! We are at the end of the 3rd week of classes already. As we have been visiting classrooms, we see
that universal procedures and class norms have been made, and students know what the class
expectations are in many classrooms. Teachers know their students’ names very well and are engaging
their students through cooperative learning structures and strategies. So keep up the good work in DQ 6
and DQ8! These are critical areas to help maintain student focus and productive learning all year long.
Also, THANK YOU for a great PD session this week on DQ2, Helping Students Interact with New
Knowledge. You were coming up with examples of how these indicators can be expressed in your content
area. As we continue forward, coaches will be following up with each PLC to help focus on DQ2 indicators
and can help you plan lessons that reflect the indicators of DQ2.
To help in the effort of Building Expertise in Spartan Teachers, we have started to compile tips, strategies,
Kagan structures, lesson examples and even video examples that all teachers can use as a resource for all
the indicators in the Marzano Learning Map in a weebly website: www.milweecoachescorner.weebly.com .
It is still in progress, but we are excited about having useful information for all teachers to access whenever
they need it.
Quick Tip:
It is important to remember that part of our task as teachers is to monitor student evidence of learning for
ALL students. It is very tempting to only call on those students with their hands up, but we may never know
if all of the students, even the quiet ones, understand the material of the lesson. Be mindful to call on as
many students as possible when posing questions. If you need a strategy to use in this area, please feel
free to contact any one of us. We will be happy to meet with you or model a strategy in your classroom.

Attention Teachers:
After we wrap up our first full Power Hour rotation this next week and begin turning our
classrooms into Study Halls and Enrichment areas, please excuse the following students for
Yearbook responsibilities if you have them in your class during Power Hour:
Allen, MacKenzie Martinez, Jasmin
Colon, Krista Mobeck, Sara
Garnett, Anysa Puebla, Matthew
Guribe, Maria Rojano, Cecelia
Johnstone, Jocelyn Seago, Reagan
Little, Alex Vargas, Kadech
Lopez, Elizabeth Vuu, Lily
After Labor Day, the students listed above will have Yearbook page deadlines for Jostens every 2-3
weeks through early March and will need as much time as can be afforded (club time comes and
goes very quickly). However, please notify me if any of these students are struggling in your
classes and will need remediation during your Power Hour rotation. They are all tremendous kids
and they know that their coursework comes first above Yearbook. If and only if they are keeping
up with your expectations and don't need the extra support, please allow them to work toward our
Yearbook deadlines.
They know to check in with you, at the very least, for attendance purposes at the beginning of 8th
Period. After that, we meet in Room 10-017.
Thank you for all your support and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or
concerns about 2014-2015 Yearbook and/or the students who represent this endeavor.
