Davidisayouthful,smilinglad,whospokecheerfully,withaheavyaccent.Hesaidheisa“parkrunner”,andisinterestedinAustralianRulesFootball,andwantstobecomeapilotwhenhehasfinishedhisstudies.HetoldusaboutthedangerousroadtoPortMoresby,andthefactthatittakes5hourstotravel180miles,andthehighamountofaccidentsanddeathsofyoungpeoplewhotrytodrinkanddrive,withoutsuccess.Healsotoldusabouttheimportanceofthe“diggingstick”forsubsistancefarming.Heisanice,friendlychap.
OURPRESIDENTANDGUESTSPEAKERSInthisphoto,wehavefromleft,RowenaFarquharson,DavidAvila,studentfromTapiniinPNG,PresidentNoelHoward,andBruceFarquharson.
WhenthestudentsfromMonivaevisitTapini,theygetanoutstandingwelcome,asthevillagehasveryfewvisitors.Theyshoweduspicturesoftheoldandnewhospital,themountainousterrain,andthedodgylookingairstrip,whereyouwouldhavetoreallybeonyourtoestolandright.Theylineupthewingtipwitharoad,thendoasharpturn,landingonagrassstripwhichgoesuphill,thendownhill,thenattheendofthestripisabigbuildingwhichsometimescouldcomeintoplayifyourjudgementwasn’ttoogood.Neitherentrancetothevillagelookedveryinviting!!BruceconcludedthattherelationshipwithTapiniisverystrong,andenrichesthewayoflifeofthecommunity.ItalsoengagestheMonivaestudentswhovisittherewithadifferentwayoflife.
Whentheplanefliesin,itcomesinfromtheextremeright,doesasharpleftturn,thentaxisuptherunwaytothebuildingattheend!!
BrucewaswiththeCFAfor30yearsandRowenawasanurseatWDHS.TheytalkedabouttheassociationMonivaeCollegehaswithMSC(TheMissionoftheSacredHeart)FatherBrianistheheadoftheorganizationinTapini,andrunsastrictship!Thetownhasschools,ahospital,police,anairstrip,andis180milesfromPortMoresby,viaagradedtreacherousroad.Thehospitalisprimitive,andpatientshavetofeedthemselves,sleeponthefloorandprovidetheirowncarer.AusAidprovidefoodforthehospital.BrucevolunteeredattheschoolasanITandmathsteacher.
