President’s Message

Hello fellow Rotarians,

Last Friday I had the pleasure to attend the District President’s Meeting in Dural. The President of the Rotary Club of Springwood, Laurie Waterson, gave a vivid report on the Springwood/Winmalee fires. It is difficult to comprehend the needs of the community with over 190 homes destroyed and dozens more damaged. The emotional needs will be challenging. Those persons whose properties survived, when all around them were destroyed are likely to experience a “why not me” guilt complex which will add to the emotional problems of the residents. He said that they have been overwhelmed with offers of goods, but their immediate need was cash, as there is no where to store donated items at the moment. He thanked all the Rotary clubs for their generous donations but much more financial support will be needed in the coming months. On a brighter note he said the mountains were “open for business” and encouraged everyone to visit the area.

District Governor Graham advised that “Rotary Peace Scholarships” had been awarded to two nominees proposed by clubs in our District. Details of awardees will be published as soon as available.

Sadly it was reported that polio has broken out in a refugee camp in northern Syria. There are 11 cases to date. Rotary and the W.H.O. have mobilized to inoculate all people in the affected camp and surrounding refugee camps. With civil war raging the inoculation of children has not be a local priority. There have been no reported cases of polio in Syria for many years.

Next Sunday our club will be hosting a Youth Exchange Student Cruise to Broken Bay. Let us hope the weather is kind so we can showcase on of our most scenic rivers, the mighty Hawkesbury.

On Friday night the Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills Inc. hosted a “Pot Luck” dinner at Glenhope which was organized by President Lyn. A number of our members thoroughly enjoyed the food and great company. Thank you both Lyn and Keith for your hospitality.

Some of us attended the Inner Wheel pot luck dinner at Keith and Lyn Stapley’s

lovely home on Friday night and a great time was had by all. Thanks Lyn for all you

hard work.

Last Meeting – Monday 28th October - Reported by Bobby Redman President Rob Mackey opened the meeting by welcoming Members with a special welcome back to Keith

Stapley, back from his working trip to Tanzania. Rob invited Keith to tell us a little bit about his trip. Keith was

able to paint a fascinating picture of his visit, with images of peacocks and monkeys amongst the mixture of

the old and new buildings in Darisalam, really whetting the appetite to find out more. Keith’s trips always

need more than a 2 minute speaking slot and I for one truly hope that we get to hear more about this

particular trip.

Rob reminded everyone about the range of upcoming events, which included the Inner Wheel Pot

Luck Dinner held on the 1st (see photos under the Member’s News section of this newsletter; the

Winston Hills Dinner coming up on 9th November; the Hills-Kellyville - Youth Exchange Students’

Cruise on 10th November; and the not to be forgotten Bollyhills event on the 16th November.

Rob circulated a book written and released by Don Stein (well known to most Members of the Club),

at his own cost. Orders can be placed through Rob and Don requests that a donation be made, either

to the Polio Plus Program or to the Salvos.

Rob announced that the donation to Springwood Rotary Club approved last week had gone through.

Rob also thanked Wilf, in his absence for standing in and doing such a good job as Acting Treasurer

whilst Keith had been away.

Club Service Director, Ray Campbell was an apology for the night.

Community Service Director, Graeme Rohan, reported on the following upcoming Events:-

- Tickets are selling well for Bollyhills, coming up on the 16th November. Graeme said that all the

organisation is in hand and that there will be a working bee to set up in the afternoon – more

information to follow.

- There have been a few changes to the Dan Murphy’s roster, with Keith swapping with Jim, who

was away on Saturday. If people can just notify Graeme when swaps have been made, it makes

it easier to maintain the roster and to keeps the Bulletin Editor up to date for announcements.

Membership Director, Penny Hill thanked Bobby for the new Club brochure that was distributed to

Members, tonight, for their information. Penny asked members to make good use of them and pass along to

potential Members.

Penny updated Members on the Mountains Bushfire activities and donations that she discussed last week.

She said that donations of clothing; toiletries; bottled water and cash had been made by Haran and Ahsha

Ramachandran; Bob and Beverly Low and herself. She said that clothing was no longer required. Penny said

that although her Company, Ecolabs had decided not to donate soap / hand wash, they were encouraging

staff to make cash donations which they will match.

(n.b These donations are in addition to the Club donation of $2000 to the Springwood Rotary Club was their

use towards the fire efforts).

Public Relations Director and Bulletin Officer, Bobby Redman circulated the new brochure (mention

previously in Penny’s report), she agreed that Members should circulate them widely and that they should

be displayed at all events. Board to discuss whether it is cost effective to include in the Residents’ Kits.

Bobby mentioned that her workplace, Interaction Disability Services had held a purple pinky day on World

Polio Day (24th October) to increase awareness of the Global Polio Eradication Program.

Bobby re-circulated a sheet for interested Members for the Inaugural District Conference for District 9685

on 23rd February. Bobby will be making the booking on behalf of Club Members to ensure that we pay for

tickets at the EARLY BIRD RATE. If you have not been at the last two meetings and would like to be added to

the list, please contact Bobby ASAP.

International Service Director and Rotary Foundation Chair, Alan Jones, indicated that we now had 25

people listed for the Club tables at Bollyhills, in addition to other tables taken by some of the Members, but

were looking for more. Communication continues between the project partners for the Jaffna project.

Alan reported that the cheque that we had sent to the Philippines for the Iligan Project had now been

received and that we were awaiting information about when the balance of the money was required.

Youth Director, Jim Sifonios, is still on holiday in the States. President Rob indicated that he is still awaiting

confirmation of numbers from Christine Zec for the Youth Exchange Cruise that the Club is sponsoring. Some

Members will be attending to assist in supervising the students and in catering lunch.

Laura Seif was an apology for the night, as she was taking up an opportunity to learn how to play gold from

Milan Zec.

Although Treasurer, Keith Stapley, has nothing to report on the financial side, given that he had only just

returned from his trip, he still was able to provide a report of the Bourke Breakfast Club program and

indicated that we had been invited along to the School Presentation Night on Tuesday 10th December and

was hoping to take a small group of representatives from the Club.

The other reminder given by Keith was around the upcoming Christmas Tree Sales – which as we all know is

a major fund-raiser for the Club each year. Given that we sold out the 480 trees early last year, Keith is

increasing numbers for this year. At this stage the selling dates are in the calendar for 14th / 15th and 21st /

22nd December – last year we started the weekend before and Keith asked for members to vote as to

whether we should replace the 21st / 22nd with 7th / 8th. Members voted enthusiastically for the earlier

weekend.

The raffle was won by Penny Hill, who did not take away the Jackpot, this week, but did manage to swap her

Rotary Christmas cake for a bottle of white wine (shame on you, Penny ). Brian King is still away and so

Mike O’Connell’s stepped in and acted as Sergeant for the night.

Guest Speaker for the week – Jodie

Pennings from ARC

Jodie Pennings came along and gave a very informative talk to the

members about Retirement Living at the Anglican Retirement

Villages (ARC).

Jodie, who has worked for ARV, a not-for-profit organisation for

the past 5 years, was able to provide detailed information about the Villages in the Hills area and the three

new projects that ARV have underway in the area.

ARV currently service 5000 clients both in their residential houses and through community support. It is

envisaged that by 2018 there will be an additional 1500 added to this list.

Jodie was able to answer the wide range of questions put forward by interested Members and was formally

thanked by Steven Fry for her comprehensive presentation.
